Leveraging one health as a sentinel approach for pandemic resilience.

The resurgence of H5N1 avian influenza highlights the urgent need for robust surveillance systems to detect zoonotic risks before they evolve into human-to-human transmission. The One Health approach-integrating human, animal, and environmental health-offers a comprehensive framework for addressing these challenges. H5N1, a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, has caused significant mortality in avian populations and poses a serious threat to human health. While human cases are rare, alarming outbreaks in mammals, such as elephant seals with up to 96% mortality, emphasize the importance of

Left internal mammary artery access for embolization of the left subclavian artery in a patient with type II endoleak after thoracic endovascular aortic repair for a ruptured right-sided aortic arch aneurysm.

A 65-year-old woman had presented with a ruptured type B intramural hematoma associated with a right-sided aortic arch aneurysm, a large Kommerell diverticulum (KD) and an aberrant left subclavian artery (LSA). She underwent total aortic arch replacement with elephant trunk, thoracic endovascular aortic repair, and LSA ligation distal to the left vertebral artery. She subsequently developed a brisk type II endoleak into the KD via retrograde flow from the left vertebral artery. Percutaneous access of the left internal mammary artery with coil embolization of the proximal LSA and KD was perform

Ultrastructural Features of the Aortic Wall in a Patient with Kommerell Diverticulum.

We report on the ultrastructural features of the aortic wall in a patient with Kommerell diverticulum. A 70-year-old woman with a right aortic arch, aberrant left subclavian artery, and Kommerell diverticulum underwent a successful total arch replacement plus the frozen elephant trunk procedure with anatomical left subclavian artery reconstruction. Small pieces of the ascending aorta, distal arch, right common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery were investigated ultrastructurally. In the ascending aortic wall, multiple cystic cavities were observed in the subintimal region of the media

The History of Bancroftian Lymphatic Filariasis in Australasia and Oceania: Is There a Threat of Re-Occurrence in Mainland Australia?

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) infects an estimated 120 million people worldwide, with a further 856 million considered at risk of infection and requiring preventative chemotherapy. The majority of LF infections are caused by Wuchereria bancrofti, named in honour of the Australian physician Joseph Bancroft, with the remainder due to Brugia malayi and B. timori. Infection with LF through the bite of an infected mosquito, can lead to the development of the condition known as elephantiasis, where swelling due to oedema leads to loss of function in the affected area and thickening of the skin, 'like an

Open retrograde endovascular stenting for left common carotid artery dissection secondary to surgical repair of acute aortic dissection: a case report and review of the literature.

A 30-year-old male presented with an acute aortic artery dissection (Stanford type A) and underwent total arch replacement using a stented elephant trunk technique. One month later, the patient developed dissections in the innominate and left common carotid artery (CCA). The innominate artery dissection caused occlusion in the right internal carotid artery (ICA) and a major stroke. Dissection of the left CCA progressed and extended to the bifurcation site. Antegrade access for a left carotid intervention was deemed as difficult because of the previously implanted stent and the additional risks

Endovascular stenting with open surgery for reconstructions of the ascending aorta and the aortic arch: a review of indications and results of hybrid techniques.

Hybrid approaches for repair of aneurysms involving the ascending aorta and the aortic arch have been developed to avoid or reduce duration of cardiopulmonary bypass and circulatory arrest and to decrease operative time, blood loss, hospital stay, morbidity, and mortality. These include ascending aorta-based debranching or cervical extra-anatomical bypasses followed by stent-grafting. In patients with associated descending aortic aneurysms, the elephant trunk technique is used followed by stent-grafting of the descending thoracic aorta. A review of the literature of hybrid aortic arch reconstr

Leptospirosis in rehabilitated Pacific harbor seals from California.

Renal disease was observed in two rehabilitated Pacific harbor seals (Phoca vitulina richardsii) from a facility in California (USA). The seals had leukocytosis and high serum phosphorus, blood urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations. A retrospective study of leptospiral antibody serum titers indicated both seals had elevated titers to Leptospira interrogans serovar grippotyphosa. A third seal, which died about the time when the index cases occurred, also had elevated titers to L. interrogans serovar grippotyphosa. Post mortem histopathologic examination of all three seals showed tubular n

Association between preoperative D-dimer with morphologic features and surgical outcomes of acute type A aortic dissection.

OBJECTIVES: The association between preoperative D-dimer with morphologic features and surgical outcomes of acute type A aortic dissection is still unclear. METHODS: 430 acute type A aortic dissection patients who underwent total arch replacement and frozen elephant trunk in Beijing Anzhen Hospital of Capital Medical University between January 2016 and December 2020 were enrolled in the present study. Patients were divided into higher D-dimer (>2307 ng/ml) group and lower D-dimer (≤2307 ng/ml) group. We compared the extent of dissection and branch artery perfusion patterns between the 2 group

Two-stage aortic surgery for distal aortic arch and descending aorta aneurysms: A case report.

RATIONALE: Although surgical treatment strategies for patients with extensive thoracic aortic disease involving the aortic arch have improved considerably, the impact of stent graft length and placement site on aortic remodeling at long-term follow-up is not fully understood, and the protection of the Adamkiewicz artery (AKA) using the frozen elephant trunk (FET) method is also unclear. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 69-year-old man with diabetic nephropathy who became increasingly fatigued and started maintenance hemodialysis 6 months prior to admission. At 64 years, he underwent clippi

Metagenomic Investigation of Ticks From Kenyan Wildlife Reveals Diverse Microbial Pathogens and New Country Pathogen Records.

Focusing on the utility of ticks as xenosurveillance sentinels to expose circulating pathogens in Kenyan drylands, host-feeding ticks collected from wild ungulates [buffaloes, elephants, giraffes, hartebeest, impala, rhinoceros (black and white), zebras (Grévy's and plains)], carnivores (leopards, lions, spotted hyenas, wild dogs), as well as regular domestic and Boran cattle were screened for pathogens using metagenomics. A total of 75 host-feeding ticks [Rhipicephalus (97.3%) and Amblyomma (2.7%)] collected from 15 vertebrate taxa were sequenced in 46 pools. Fifty-six pathogenic bacterial sp…

Relaxin concentrations in serum and urine of endangered and crazy mixed-up species.

The human population explosion has pushed many mammalian wildlife species to the brink of extinction. Conservationists are increasingly turning to captive breeding as a means of preserving the gene pool. We previously reported that serum immunoactive relaxin provided a reliable means of distinguishing between true and pseudopregnancy in domestic dogs, and this method has since been found to be a reliable indicator of true pregnancy in endangered Asian and African elephants and Sumatran rhinoceroses. Our canine relaxin radioimmunoassay (RIA) has now been adapted and validated to measure relaxin…

Sexual maturity in growing dinosaurs does not fit reptilian growth models.

Recent histological studies suggest relatively rapid growth in dinosaurs. However, the timing of reproductive maturity (RM) in dinosaurs is poorly known because unambiguous indicators of RM are rare. One exception is medullary bone (MB), which is an ephemeral bony tissue that forms before ovulation in the marrow cavities of birds as a calcium source for eggshelling. Recently, MB also was described in a single specimen of the saurischian dinosaur Tyrannosaurus rex. Here, we report two other occurrences of MB: in another saurischian dinosaur, Allosaurus, and in the ornithischian dinosaur Tenonto

Diversity in the later Paleogene proboscidean radiation: a small barytheriid from the Oligocene of Dhofar Governorate, Sultanate of Oman.

Despite significant recent improvements to our understanding of the early evolution of the Order Proboscidea (elephants and their extinct relatives), geographic sampling of the group's Paleogene fossil record remains strongly biased, with the first ~30 million years of proboscidean evolution documented solely in near-coastal deposits of northern Africa. The considerable morphological disparity that is observable among the late Eocene and early Oligocene proboscideans of northern Africa suggests that other, as yet unsampled, parts of Afro-Arabia might have served as important centers for the ea…

Detection of Trypanosoma brucei in field-captured tsetse flies and identification of host species fed on by the infected flies.

The prevalence of trypanosome infections in tsetse flies in the Chiawa area of Lower Zambezi in Zambia, with endemic trypanosomosis, was determined by a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method that allowed the detection of trypanosome DNA and determination of the type of animal host fed on by the tsetse fly Glossina pallidipes, using tsetse-derived DNA extracts as templates. Ninety G. pallidipes (82 females and 8 males; 18.3%) of the 492 flies captured by baited biconical traps tested positive for the presence of Trypanosoma brucei species genomic DNA. Of the 90 T. brucei-positive flies, 47 (52
