Nasal sinus mucoceles are an uncommon cause of painful optic neuropathy. We report the case of a patient presenting an acute compressive optic neuropathy related to an anterior clinoid mucocele. The diagnosis was mainly made with CT and MRI, and the patient was treated with endoscopic endonasal transseptal surgery 10 days after the beginning of the disorder. Visual recovery was complete 3 days later. We review the literature on the etiologies of this type of pathology, the work-up, and the possible treatments.

This study reevaluates a surgical technique known as the Chula technique, previously reported in 1991 for correction of frontoethmoidal encephalomeningocele. From 1986 to 1999, 108 patients were operated on with this technique, which could remove the herniation mass, repair dural and bone defects, reconstruct the naso-orbital area, and restore aesthetic facial appearance in a single stage. Formal frontal craniotomy was not necessary. The result has been very satisfying in terms of safety, cure rate, and aesthetic outcome. Fifty consecutive patients underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FES) for bilateral rhinosinusitis. Pre- and post-operative computerized tomographic scans were evaluated. Of 50 patients, 45 (90%) experienced improvement in symptoms. From 1979 to 1989, 21 patients underwent craniofacial resection for malignancies involving the anterior skull base.
