Preoperative ultrasound and gallium-67 evaluation of abdominal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The diagnostic accuracy of abdominal ultrasonography followed by gallium (Ga)-67 scintigraphy in 21 patients, aged 1 to 14 years, appearing with abdominal non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) was analyzed. All cases were confirmed by biopsy; in a majority (16 patients), the tissue was obtained from an abdominal mass at the time of laparotomy subsequent to the imaging studies. Nineteen satisfactory abdominal ultrasound examinations were performed; 18 were interpreted as characteristic of NHL. Sixteen of these were of masses involving the gastrointestinal tract. All 21 patients had 67Ga scintigraphy tha

Minimal genetic findings and their cancer control implications. A family with the cancer family syndrome.

A kindred in which five first-degree relatives were initially known to exhibit colorectal, endometrial, and unspecified carcinoma for two generations, occurring at an early age and including three cases of multiple primary cancer, is consistent with criteria for the cancer family syndrome. Follow-up included a diligent surveillance program that led to the early diagnosis of colon cancer in a young member of the third generation who had been considered at high risk for this lesion. Manifestly, hereditary cancer syndrome identification may be expedited through longitudinal study of apparently ca

Emergency total extracorporeal life support versus standard advanced cardiac life support with rescue extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for refractory out-of-hospital cardiac arrest: protocol for the ECLS-OHCA randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a time-sensitive emergency associated with high mortality and substantial risk of neurological disability. Extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been introduced for refractory cardiac arrest, but recent randomized controlled trials have reported conflicting results, and the benefit of ECPR implemented according to rigorously timed protocols remains uncertain. AIM: This trial evaluates whether emergency total extracorporeal life support (ECLS), with emphasis on expedited cann

Identification of pulmonary arterial hypertension patients with venous or capillary involvement.

RATIONALE: While therapeutic advances have improved survival for patients with Group 1 pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), patients with Group 1.5 "PAH with features of venous/capillary involvement" (formerly pulmonary veno-occlusive disease or pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis, now collectively termed PVOD/PCH) remain underrecognized, develop serious complications from usual PAH therapy titrations, and suffer high mortality awaiting necessary lung transplant. Identifying PVOD/PCH early before therapy initiation could aid management and expedite transplant referral. OBJECTIVES: We aimed

Layout Types and Efficiency Improvement Strategies for Open Points of Dispensing in Vaccine and Antibiotic Distribution: A Scoping Review.

INTRODUCTION: Regarding pandemics or bioterrorism incidents, prompt and secure distribution of vaccines and prophylactic antibiotics is crucial. Open Points of Dispensing (PODs) are established to serve the public, and their effectiveness depends on the internal spatial layout and operational workflow design. However, studies on systematic classifications of open POD configurations and comprehensive syntheses of strategies for enhancing operational efficiency are lacking. STUDY OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to classify open POD layout types used for vaccine and antibiotic distribution

Simulation-free workflow for lattice radiation therapy using deep learning predicted synthetic computed tomography: A feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Lattice radiation therapy (LRT) is a form of spatially fractionated radiation therapy that allows increased total dose delivery aiming for improved treatment response without an increase in toxicities, commonly utilized for palliation of bulky tumors. The LRT treatment planning process is complex, while eligible patients often have an urgent need for expedited treatment start. In this study, we aimed to develop a simulation-free workflow for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT)-based LRT planning via deep learning-predicted synthetic CT (sCT) to expedite treatment initiation. Content Analysis of Social Determinants of Health Accelerator Plans Using Artificial Intelligence: A Use Case for Public Health Practitioners.

CONTEXT: Public health practice involves the development of reports and plans, including funding progress reports, strategic plans, and community needs assessments. These documents are valuable data sources for program monitoring and evaluation. However, practitioners rarely have the bandwidth to thoroughly and rapidly review large amounts of primarily qualitative data to support real-time and continuous program improvement. Systematically examining and categorizing qualitative data through content analysis is labor-intensive. Large language models (LLMs), a type of generative artificial intel

Opioid treatment program culture and philosophy: Views of OTP staff and state officials on implementing interim methadone treatment.

INTRODUCTION: People seeking treatment at opioid treatment programs (OTPs) can face admission delays. Interim methadone (IM) treatment, an effective approach to expedite admissions when programs lack sufficient counseling staff, has been seldom implemented. A study of implementation facilitation to spur the use of IM was conducted among six OTPs and their state opioid treatment authorities (SOTAs) in four US states. Between study recruitment and launch, organizational changes at three OTPs eliminated their need for IM. Two OTPs' requests to their states to provide IM (one prior to study launch

The CErebro Placental RAtio as indicator for delivery following perception of reduced fetal movements, protocol for an international cluster randomised clinical trial; the CEPRA study.

BACKGROUND: Routine assessment in (near) term pregnancy is often inaccurate for the identification of fetuses who are mild to moderately compromised due to placental insufficiency and are at risk of adverse outcomes, especially when fetal size is seemingly within normal range for gestational age. Although biometric measurements and cardiotocography are frequently used, it is known that these techniques have low sensitivity and specificity. In clinical practice this diagnostic uncertainty results in considerable 'over treatment' of women with healthy fetuses whilst truly compromised fetuses rem

[The anatomical and functional origin of the first bipedalism].

This communication is the synthesis of ten years of researchers of comparative anatomy done by the author or under his control on fossil Hominids, three million years old, found by his expeditions in Eastern Ethiopia. It brings, for the first time, the odd picture of a skeleton adapted to arboricolism and bipedalism together. The rachis has already the curves of an erect being but with at least a thoraco-lumbar cyphosis a bit more elongated than in our own rachis; the pelvis is wide and shallow like the pelvis of a biped but with many particular features like the width of the iliac wings, a gr…

Prehospital Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma with 5G-enabled Real-time Telesupervision for the Early Detection of Intra-abdominal Hemorrhage and Trauma Team Activation: A Case Report and Feasibility Insight.

Prehospital ultrasound, particularly the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography in Trauma (EFAST), has emerged as a valuable tool in the early identification of life-threatening conditions, including hemoperitoneum and pneumothorax. Current evidence supports the role of prehospital ultrasound in improving diagnostic accuracy, facilitating triage decisions, and enhancing communication with receiving trauma centers. However, its application in detecting intra-abdominal hemorrhage and expediting trauma team activation (TTA) remains underutilized in many emergency medical systems. This case h

β2-agonist toxicity in pregnancy causing troponin elevation and fetal distress.

β₂-agonist toxicity is a rare complication of asthma treatment, but there is little information about its interplay in pregnancy with maternal and fetal physiology. This case describes a woman in her early 30s at 37 weeks gestation with supratherapeutic use of inhaled salbutamol and salmeterol in the setting of worsening shortness of breath in the third trimester of pregnancy. She presented to the emergency department with chest discomfort and shortness of breath with a raised maternal lactate and troponin. Fetal cardiotocography was abnormal, so birth was expedited by emergency caesarean sect

Diagnostic effect of extended focussed assessment with sonography for trauma (E-FAST) in thoracic and abdomen injuries at a tertiary care centre.

Extended focussed assessment with sonography for trauma (E-FAST) has become a paramount tool in emergency trauma department. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the effectiveness of E-FAST in individuals presenting with blunt abdominal and thoracic trauma, to evaluate its accuracy in guiding operative and conservative management strategies and to determine its role in improving triage efficiency, minimizing treatment delays and enhancing overall patient outcomes. Male individuals exhibited the greatest percentages of trauma than females and abdominal injuries were more frequent than thoraci

[Glossopharyngeal, Vagus, Accessory, and Hypoglossal Nerves in Head and Neck Practice].

This review presents a concise, practice-focused overview of the glossopharyngeal (IX), vagus (X), accessory (XI), and hypoglossal (XII) nerves, with particular emphasis on head and neck practice. We outline clinically relevant anatomy and surgical landmarks from the skull base to the cervical field, including constant planes, vascular and osseous reference points, and danger zones encountered during neck dissection, thyroid surgery, and parapharyngeal surgery. We then summarize each nerve's major functions and characteristic deficits, linking sentinel symptoms with bedside and endoscopic find

Presentations of Cutaneous Disease in Various Skin Pigmentations: Hidradenitis Suppurativa.

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterized by recurrent deep-seated nodules and painful abscesses with scars, fistulae, and sinus tracts that predominately affect the intertriginous sites. Onset typically occurs soon after puberty. Depending on disease severity, HS can lead to varying levels of pain, disability, and disfiguration with significant impacts on quality of life. Hidradenitis suppurativa is diagnosed clinically, and no diagnostic tests are specific to the disease. Therefore, clinicians must have the knowledge and competence to identify the cl

Exploring the toxicological impact of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate exposure on Alzheimer's disease via network toxicology and integrative bioinformatics analysis.

This study investigates the potential involvement of the environmental contaminant di(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) in the etiology and progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Available data indicates that DEHP, a prevalent plasticizer capable of traversing the blood-brain barrier, can induce oxidative stress and other neurotoxic effects, potentially aggravating the etiology of Alzheimer's disease. The multi-target molecular pathways remain inadequately comprehended, and the existing research exhibits methodological deficiencies. We employed a comprehensive computational biology strategy that

A review: From old drugs to new solutions: The role of repositioning in alzheimer's disease treatment.

Drug repositioning or drug reprofiling, involves identifying novel indications for approved and previously abandoned drugs in the treatment of other diseases. The traditional drug discovery process is tedious, time-consuming, risky, and challenging. Fortunately, the inception of the drug repositioning concept has expedited the process by using compounds with established safety profiles in humans, and thereby significantly reducing costs. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a severe neurological disorder characterized by progressive degeneration of the brain with limited and less effective therapeutic
