Antihepatotoxic activity of a quantified Desmodium adscendens decoction and D-pinitol against chemically-induced liver damage in rats.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: The isolation of D-pinitol (or 3-O-methyl-D-chiro-inositol) from an aqueous decoction of Desmodium adscendens (Fabaceae) leaves and twigs is reported. The protective and curative effect of this decoction, in which d-pinitol was quantified, and of pure D-pinitol, against chemically-induced liver damage in rats has been evaluated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Enzyme levels of aspartate transaminase (AST), alanine transaminase (ALT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which are among the usual biomarkers for liver damage, were determined in serum samples of experimental ani…

Parkia biglobosa Jacq. (Locust Bean) leaves and seeds extracts attenuates diabetic-linked cognitive dysfunction in streptozotocin-induced male wistar rats.

Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels, causing significant morbidity and mortality rates. This study investigated the antidiabetic, neuroprotective, and antioxidant effects of ethanol extracts of Parkia biglobosa (PB) leaves and seeds in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. The administration of STZ significantly elevated fasting blood glucose levels (FBGL) to 355-400 mg/mL compared to 111 mg/mL in normal controls, indicating hyperglycemia. Treatment with PB extracts at 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg significantly (p < 0.05) reduced FBGL in a dose

Mimosine facilitates metallic cation uptake by plants through formation of mimosine-cation complexes.

Iron deficiency conditions as well as iron supplied as a Fe(III)-mimosine complex induced a number of strategy I and strategy II genes for iron uptake in leucaena. Leucaena leucocephala (leucaena) is a tree-legume that can grow in alkaline soils, where metal-cofactors like Fe(III) are sparingly available. Mimosine, a known chelator of Fe(III), may facilitate Fe(III) uptake in leucaena by serving as a phytosiderophore. To test if mimosine can serve as a phytosiderophore, three sets of experiments were carried out. First, the binding properties and solubility of metal-mimosine complexes were ass

Modulation of Symbiotic Compatibility by Rhizobial Zinc Starvation Machinery.

Pathogenic bacteria need high-affinity zinc uptake systems to counteract the nutritional immunity exerted by infected hosts. However, our understanding of zinc homeostasis in mutualistic systems such as the rhizobium-legume symbiosis is limited. Here, we show that the conserved high-affinity zinc transporter ZnuABC and accessory transporter proteins (Zip1, Zip2, and c06450) made cumulative contributions to nodulation of the broad-host-range strain Sinorhizobium fredii CCBAU45436. Zur acted as a zinc-dependent repressor for the znuC-znuB-zur operon, znuA, and c06450 by binding to the associated

Maternal dietary consumption of legumes, vegetables and fruit during pregnancy, does it protect against small for gestational age?

BACKGROUND: Different diets during pregnancy might have an impact on the health, reflected in the birthweight of newborns. The consumption of fruits and vegetables during pregnancy and the relationship with newborn health status have been studied by several authors. However, these studies have shown inconsistent results. PURPOSE: We assessed whether certain foods were related to the risk of small for gestational age (SGA). METHODS: A matched by age (± 2 years) and hospital 1:1 case-control study of 518 pairs of pregnant Spanish women in five hospitals was conducted. The cases were women with

Phenolic Metabolites of Dalea ornata Affect Both Survival and Motility of the Human Pathogenic Hookworm Ancylostoma ceylanicum.

Hookworms are ubiquitous human parasites, infecting nearly one billion people worldwide, and are the leading cause of anemia and malnutrition in resource-limited countries. Current drug treatments rely on the benzimidazole derivatives albendazole and mebendazole, but there is emerging resistance to these drugs. As part of a larger screening effort, using a hamster-based ex vivo assay, anthelmintic activity toward Ancylostoma ceylanicum was observed in the crude extract of aerial parts of Dalea ornata. These studies have led to the isolation and characterization of phenolic metabolites 1-10. Th

An Investigation into the Immunomodulatory Activities of Sutherlandia frutescens in Healthy Mice.

Sutherlandia frutescens is a medicinal plant that has been traditionally used in southern Africa for cancers, infections, and inflammatory conditions. We recently published experiments demonstrating that an aqueous extract of S. frutescens possessed potent immune-stimulatory activity. This work was carried out with murine macrophages, an immune cell type that plays a pivotal role in host defense from infection and in shaping host inflammatory and immune responses. Here, we conducted a series of follow-up experiments to explore the impact of consuming S. frutescens on host response to bacterial

Cratylia argentea seed lectin, a possible defensive protein against plant-eating organisms: effects on rat metabolism and gut histology.

This present work was undertaken to answer two basic questions (a) is C. argentea lectin part of the general defensive strategy of the plant against predation by animals? (b) if so, how does it act on them? To achieve these goals the lectin from C. argentea seeds was purified to homogeneity and included at a 2% level in a diet containing 10% total protein and given to growing rats for 10 days. In vivo it was noted that the lectin from C. argentea is resistant to gut proteolysis, binds to the cells lining the small intestine and induces enlargement in the small intestine, caecum and colon, kidn

Regulation of rhizosphere acidification by photosynthetic activity in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. walp.) seedlings.

In contrast to cereals or other crops, legumes are known to acidify the rhizosphere even when supplied with nitrates. This phenomenon has been attributed to N2 fixation allowing excess uptake of cations over anions; however, as we have found previously, the exposure of the shoot to illumination can cause rhizosphere acidification in the absence of N2 fixation in cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L. Walp). In this study, we examined whether the light-induced acidification can relate to photosynthetic activity and corresponding alterations in cation-anion uptake ratios. The changes of rhizosphere pH alo
