Advances in Necrotizing Fasciitis Animal Models: Current Trends and Future Perspectives.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive soft tissue infection with high morbidity and mortality, yet its pathophysiology remains incompletely understood. Animal models are indispensable for dissecting disease mechanisms and testing therapeutic interventions, yet their translational relevance varies across species and experimental approaches. This review critically evaluates NF models in rodents, zebrafish, rabbits, pigs, and non-human primates, highlighting their relative strengths in replicating immunopathology, systemic dissemination, and biofilm-driven persistence. We examine me

Socioeconomic status affects amputation and mortality rates in necrotizing fasciitis patients.

PURPOSE: Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, but rapidly progressing bacterial infection of the subcutaneous tissues and muscular fascia with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Our study aims to determine if socioeconomic status (SES) is a predictor of outcomes in NF. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of patients diagnosed with NF at our institution. Demographic information, insurance status, medical and surgical history, vitals, ASA score, blood laboratory values, surgical procedure information, and outcomes prior to patient discharge were collected. Patient zip codes were

Lower Limb Serratia marcescens Necrotizing Fasciitis Complicated by Nosocomial COVID-19.

Serratia marcescens represents an unusual yet potentially deadly cause of lower limb necrotizing fasciitis (NF). Compounding the already high mortality of NF, S. marcescens infections are usually associated with worse outcomes (i.e., amputation). Here we present the case of a 56-year-old immunocompromised man due to lupus nephritis who developed lower limb NF secondary to S. marcescens followed by nosocomial coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonitis. Successful limb salvage was achieved through a multidisciplinary team approach from various specialties including plastic surgery, orthoped

HLA-II-Dependent Neuroimmune Changes in Group A Streptococcal Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A Streptococcus, GAS) bacteria cause a spectrum of human diseases ranging from self-limiting pharyngitis and mild, uncomplicated skin infections (impetigo, erysipelas, and cellulitis) to highly morbid and rapidly invasive, life-threatening infections such as streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing fasciitis (NF). HLA class II allelic polymorphisms are linked with differential outcomes and severity of GAS infections. The dysregulated immune response and peripheral cytokine storm elicited due to invasive GAS infections increase the risk for toxic shock an

Polymicrobial odontogenic periorbital and orbital necrotizing fasciitis (PONF): A case report.

PURPOSE: To present a case of periorbital and orbital necrotizing fasciitis (PONF) from an odontogenic source with a distinct microbiologic profile and highlight the need for emergent multidisciplinary management. OBSERVATIONS: A 39-year-old man presented with periorbital swelling, pain, and erythema following facial trauma. Imaging revealed peri-dental collections, accompanying maxillary sinusitis, and pre- and post-septal involvement. Immediate surgical debridement of necrotic tissue along with broad-spectrum antibiotics were pursued for management. Cultures grew multiple organisms, most no

A rare case of necrotizing fasciitis after early infant male circumcision.

Even though circumcision is low-risk, complications may occur, necessitating careful management. Here, we describe a 5-month-and-28-day-old infant who developed necrotizing fasciitis following Plastibell circumcision. This report emphasizes that clinicians should use standard equipment and appropriate-sized rings to prevent these unusual complications following circumcision.

Necrotizing Fasciitis Presenting as Generalized Weakness, Malaise, and Acute Kidney Injury.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a surgical emergency that must be diagnosed promptly in order to avoid serious consequences or death. Additionally, symptoms of this condition are similar to less severe skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis or erysipelas and can be easily confused. In this case, the patient presented to the emergency department with systemic symptoms, notably malaise and generalized weakness. A cutaneous complaint, a "labial cyst", was only elicited after more specific questioning. Laboratory investigations revealed abnormal renal function tests (RFTs), suggestive of

An extensive pyoderma gangrenosum mimicking necrotizing fasciitis: An unusual case report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyoderma Gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, benign and inflammatory disease characterized by ulcerative skin lesions. We report the successful management of an unusual case of PG following a caesarean section, with extensive cutaneous skin involvement and mimicking necrotizing fasciitis. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 36-year-old woman was admitted with extensive surgical site inflammation after a caesarean section. Despite antibiotic treatment and wound care, the clinical course deteriorated rapidly. Wound debridement following negative pressure closure was performed due to an immediate incr

Necrotizing Fasciitis: Association with Pregnancy-related Risk Factors Early in Life.

Background: Pregnancy-related risk factors for necrotizing fasciitis are poorly understood. We investigated pregnancy-related characteristics associated with the long-term risk of developing necrotizing fasciitis, a rare life-threatening infectious disease. Methods: We analyzed a longitudinal cohort of 1,344,996 parous women in Quebec, Canada between 1989 and 2020. The main exposure measures included complications of pregnancy such as gestational diabetes, preterm delivery, metabolic disorder, and other maternal characteristics. We followed the women over time to identify future hospitalizatio

Legal Tattoo Complicated by Sepsis and Necrotizing Fasciitis Requiring Acute Surgery.

A previously healthy 26-year-old male was referred to our hospital for fever occurring after getting a tattoo on the left leg. At the emergency department, he was promptly diagnosed with sepsis and necrotizing fasciitis of the left leg. The patient was empirically treated with vancomycin and piperacillin/tazobactam. Blood cultures identified Streptococcus pyogenes. Necrotizing fasciitis required acute surgery. The patient survived as a result of an early clinical diagnosis and surgical intervention. We report the first case of sepsis and severe soft tissue infection, after legal tattooing, whi

Perianal Necrotizing Fasciitis with Retroperitoneal Extension: A Case Report from Pakistan.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially fatal condition. It is defined as a rapidly spreading infection of the subcutaneous soft tissue. Extension into the retroperitoneum may further complicate this deadly condition. We report a case of a 45-year-old gentleman who presented to our institute with perianal necrotizing fasciitis with extension into the retroperitoneum. He was managed with antibiotics and prompt surgical debridement. Our patient had a positive outcome which may be due to the fact that we had a high clinical suspicion, on the basis of which we opted for early operative man

Postsurgical Pyoderma Gangrenosum Versus Necrotizing Fasciitis: Can We Spot the Difference?

BACKGROUND: Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare noninfectious cutaneous disease characterized by expanding areas of skin ulceration around necrotic centers with purulent debris. Exceptionally, it can be precipitated by surgery alone, and this entity has been described as postsurgical pyoderma gangrenosum (PSPG). Cases of PSPG in the literature are rare. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of the current literature on PSPG and highlight some observed differences between these conditions. We also present our experience of PSPG imitating an infectious process post reduction mammoplasty. RES

Necrotizing fasciitis due to Streptococcus mitis caused by accidental human bite.

Human bite wounds are more prone to infection than animal bites, which may cause necrotizing soft tissue infections such as myositis, fasciitis. Both aerobic and anaerobic microorganisms may be responsible, including Streptococcus spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Peptostreptococcus spp. Necrotizing fasciitis is characterized by serious tissue destruction and systemic toxicity with high morbidity and mortality. We report a patient with Streptococcus mitis associated necrotizing fasciitis on the upper extremity resulting from an accidental human bite, which caused nearly fatal infection. Prophylacti

[Fulminant isolated necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall, complicating thoracic empyema].

Authors introduce the case of a 64-year-old male patient with fulminant isolated necrotizing fasciitis of the chest wall, complicating empyema thoracis of unknown origin. The patient's co-morbidities were hypertension, ischaemic heart disease, atrial fibrillation with oral anticoagulation. The real etiology was revealed post mortem, due to the rapid progression. The autopsy demonstrated that the fasciitis was caused by a small blunt thoracic trauma (haematoma), not emerged from patient's history and was not visible during physical examination. Authors review diagnostic pitfalls, leading to del
