Service-seeking behaviors among male victims of violence in five African countries: The effects of positive and adverse childhood experiences.

BACKGROUND: Violence against boys and men is widely under-reported. Boys and men face unique and gendered barriers to accessing services following experiences of violence. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study is a secondary data analysis of five nationally representative population-based Violence Against Children and Youth Surveys (VACS) conducted in Kenya (2019), Côte d'Ivoire (2018), Lesotho (2018), Mozambique (2019), and Namibia (2019). Analysis was limited to males between 18 and 24 years who experienced lifetime physical or sexual violence. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We analyzed the associat

The p factor of psychopathology and personality in middle childhood: genetic and gestational risk factors.

BACKGROUND: A joint, hierarchical structure of psychopathology and personality has been reported in adults but should also be investigated at earlier ages, as psychopathology often develops before adulthood. Here, we investigate the joint factor structure of psychopathology and personality in eight-year-old children, estimate factor heritability and explore external validity through associations with established developmental risk factors. METHODS: Phenotypic and biometric exploratory factor analyses with bifactor rotation on genetically informative data from the Norwegian Mother, Father, and

Cushing Syndrome in a Pediatric Patient With a KCNJ5 Variant and Successful Treatment With Low-dose Ketoconazole.

CONTEXT: Pathogenic variants in KCNJ5, encoding the GIRK4 (Kir3.4) potassium channel, have been implicated in the pathogenesis of familial hyperaldosteronism type-III (FH-III) and sporadic primary aldosteronism (PA). In addition to aldosterone, glucocorticoids are often found elevated in PA in association with KCNJ5 pathogenic variants, albeit at subclinical levels. However, to date no GIRK4 defects have been linked to Cushing syndrome (CS). PATIENT: We present the case of a 10-year-old child who presented with CS at an early age due to bilateral adrenocortical hyperplasia (BAH). The patient

Reproductive issues from the Islamic perspective.

The Islamic faith is regarded by its followers, Muslims, as a complete way of life. A multitude of nationalities practise Islam and also various sects, and as a result there are various interpretations of Qur'anic guidance relating to almost every matter. Only a fully qualified jurist of the highest rank can issue edicts on problems that are not already clearly addressed in the Qur'an. This applies to contemporary issues and any Muslim is at liberty to debate and dialogue with the religious leader to obtain a ruling on a specific question. Marriage is described as half the faith in Islam and t

Neonatal presentation of autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease with a maternal history of tuberous sclerosis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood presentation of polycystic kidney disease has been reported with tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Recently some such cases have been shown to be due to combined deletion of the PKD1 and TSC2 genes, which lie close together on chromosome 16. The phenomenon of anticipation, whereby disease presentation occurs at a progressively earlier age in each generation, has been suggested to occur in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We have carried out a genetic study of a family in which these issues became clinically relevant. Neonatal presentation of polycysti

Sudden Onset of Refusal to Eat on Waking After a Nightmare in a 6-Year-Old Girl.

Bridgette is a 6-year-old girl, who presented with sudden onset of refusal to eat or drink. The only precipitating event was a nightmare the previous night. She described a dream in which her mother and maternal aunt, dressed as witches, and father and maternal uncle, appearing as bats, wanted to kill her by making her eat and drink from a cauldron. Bridgette stated, "I can't eat anymore, I'm afraid of dying." Bridgette's eating pattern and behavior were described as previously normal. Motor, social, and language milestones were also normal. Her parents reported that she occasionally refused n

Agreement between the fatty acid ethyl ester hair test for alcohol and social workers' reports.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social worker reports and the fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) test as a biomarker for heavy alcohol use. In 2005, a diagnostic program to detect excessive alcohol use by FAEE hair analysis in parents at high risk of having children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders was established. All cases submitted by Child Protective Services between May and December of 2007 (n = 172) were included comparing social worker reports with FAEE test outcome by odds ratio analysis. A subanalysis of mothers (n = 119), excluding fathers, was also

Sociopsychological factors in women with chronic pelvic pain with and without pelvic venous congestion.

Social and psychological factors have long been proposed as being of importance in a sizeable subgroup of women complaining of unexplained chronic pelvic pain (CPP). The aim of this study was to examine this in two subgroups of CPP patients, thereby eliminating pain alone as the determining variable. Consecutive attenders at a clinic for CPP were assessed on a range of somatic, historical, social, and psychological variables using detailed interviews and questionnaires. They were subsequently allocated to one of two groups, based on the presence or absence of pelvic venous congestion (PVC). Si

Life shocks and crime: a test of the "turning point" hypothesis.

Other researchers have posited that important events in men's lives-such as employment, marriage, and parenthood-strengthen their social ties and lead them to refrain from crime. A challenge in empirically testing this hypothesis has been the issue of self-selection into life transitions. This study contributes to this literature by estimating the effects of an exogenous life shock on crime. We use data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, augmented with information from hospital medical records, to estimate the effects of the birth of a child with a severe health problem on th

[Are children properly classified within the scope of expert assessment to determine need for services?].

This project deals with assessment directives issued by the leading statutory care insurance companies to define the need for care of children at certain ages in coping with the activities of daily life specified by the German Social Legislation. The ages in question relate to healthy, normally developed children. They are used as a measure of comparison for the assessment of diseased children. Besides, they have a decisive significance in defining the need for care. Only if a child is not able to perform a certain activity, although it is meant to be able to do so at that age, can we define t

Association of Timing and Duration of Prenatal Analgesic Opioid Exposure With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Prior studies have reported that the use of illicit opioids during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in offspring; however, evidence regarding the association of analgesic opioids is limited. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of timing and duration of prenatal analgesic opioid exposure with ADHD in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study uses data from the Norwegian Mother, Father and Child Cohort study (1999-2008), a nationwide birth cohort study linked to national health registries, with a m
