Gelsemium elegans extract powder alleviates high stocking density-related adverse effects in broilers via immune-intestinal microbiota synergistic mechanisms.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of different doses of Gelsemium elegans extract powder (GEE) on broilers under high stocking density (HSD). A total of 78 one-day-old male yellow-feathered broilers were randomly assigned to 5 treatment groups: normal stocking density (NSD), HSD, HSD + 0.06% GEE, HSD + 0.12% GEE, and HSD + 0.6% GEE. The results showed that HSD impaired broiler growth and physiological functions. Dietary supplementation with 0.06% GEE (200 mg/kg diet Gelsemium elegans extract) significantly improved growth performance (marked increases in body weight, average daily fe

Impact of Climate Change on Farm Animals: Physiological Mechanisms, Health and Productivity, and Integrated Adaptation Strategies.

Climate change is accelerating the frequency of extreme thermal environments, threatening animal welfare, global herd productivity, and agricultural economics. Heat stress-occurring when the ambient temperature-humidity index (THI) surpasses species-specific thermoneutral thresholds-initiates physiological heat-loss cascades (panting, sweating, and peripheral vasodilation), neuroendocrine disruptions (depressed thyroid hormones, elevated glucocorticoids, and insulin dysregulation), mitochondrial oxidative stress, and gut-barrier breakdown. These systemic disruptions drive substantial performan

Longitudinal multimodal assessment of neuropathy in a porcine neuritis model.

BACKGROUND: Evaluation of animal models is critical in pre-clinical therapeutic research to determine translation potential. Due to their anatomic and physiological resemblance to humans, porcine models are a critical step prior to human translation. Our work evaluates long-term anatomic and behavioral effects (n = 9) over 8 weeks post-neuritis-induction surgery of the common peroneal nerve (CPN). NEW METHOD: This model utilizes longitudinal MRI and histological analysis of nerve and muscle, in addition to the use of the algometer and feather test as quantitative sensory testing methods. RES

Multimodal imaging and molecular analysis of a 350-year-old purple heron mummy.

The discovery of glacially preserved remains offers a rare and invaluable opportunity to explore long-term tissue preservation, diagenetic alterations, and microbial colonisation. In this study, we examined a 350-year-old glacier mummy of a purple heron (Ardea purpurea) recovered from the Austrian Alps, specifically from the Gurgler Ferner glacier in Tyrol, Austria, at an altitude of 3.004 m in the area of the Hochwildehaus towards Hochwilde and the Annakegele, marking the first documented instance of an avian glacier mummy in this region. A comprehensive multimodal analytical approach was emp

Wings with stiffness and stroke variations enabling efficient flight and swimming for flapping-wing robots.

Flapping-wing propulsion demonstrates high efficiency and maneuverability, commonly observed in natural species for either aerial flight or aquatic swimming. To chase prey and evade predators, biological flapping wings are specialized for a single medium, posing significant challenges in achieving effective and efficient amphibious flapping. Existing aerial-aquatic robots are primarily driven by artificial propulsion and lack bionic flapping-wing mechanisms. Meanwhile, current flapping-wing robots are operated only in a single medium, without amphibious propulsion capabilities. Inspired by the

Grafting of Md5 gC onto herpesvirus of turkeys confers full protection against very virulent Marek's disease virus.

Marek's disease virus (MDV) virulence has progressively compromised the efficacy of current vaccines, including herpesvirus of turkeys (HVT). Glycoprotein C (gC) is conserved among mardiviruses and essential for horizontal transmission, but its immunogenic potential remains underexploited. We developed a "viral grafting" strategy by precisely replacing the HVT gC gene with that of very virulent MDV (vvMDV) strain Md5, generating a recombinant virus rHVT‑gC/Md5. The rHVT‑gC/Md5 replicated similarly to parental HVT in chicken embryo fibroblasts and stably expressed Md5‑gC. Specific-pathogen-free

Effects of a methionine deficiency on chicken tissue protein turnover: comparative analysis of methionine source.

Methionine (Met) supply is critical for optimum growth rate, muscle development, antioxidant activity, one-carbon metabolism in liver, and feather production in birds. Met is the first limiting amino acid (AA) in chicken diets, yet little is known about how different Met levels and sources influence tissue protein metabolism. Growth performance and tissue protein metabolism were compared in broilers fed either deficient or sufficient in Met, supplemented with either DL-Met or DL-HMTBA (a Met analogue). Protein synthesis rates were quantified in vivo in the liver, in 2 muscle types, and in the

Culture breakthrough enables goose circovirus (GoCV) isolation and pathogenic gosling modeling to uncover the association between viral infection and vaccine failure.

Goose circovirus (GoCV), recognized as the most economically significant immunosuppressive pathogen in global waterfowl production, causes considerable economic losses annually, and multiprovincial surveillance studies have documented high seroprevalence rates. The critical barrier to combating GoCV has persisted in the complete absence of viable in vitro culture systems, fundamentally limiting pathogenesis studies and vaccine development. In a breakthrough advancement, this study pioneers the first successful establishment of a stable primary goose embryo kidney (GEK) cell culture system for

Energy use and egg production in Rhode Island Red × Naked Neck hens under dry tropical family poultry systems.

The objective was to evaluate the performance of Rhode Island Red × Naked Neck hybrid hens—partial Naked Neck (PNNH; Na·na) vs. fully feathered (FFH; na·na)—under family poultry conditions in the dry tropics. Sixty hens (30 PNNH and 30 FFH) were included in the analysis. Growth was described with the Gompertz–Laird function, and metabolizable energy (ME) was partitioned into ME for maintenance (MEm), ME for egg production (MEp), and ME requirement (MEreq). Differences in productivity between phenotypes were assessed using mixed models, and linear regression related the temperature–humidity ind

Courtship display behavior influences tail myology in Centrocercus minimus (Gunnison sage-grouse).

A variety of bird species engage in complicated, elaborate courtship displays to impress potential mates. Such displays include wing flaring, aerial acrobatics, choreographed dances, and tail fanning. Though these behaviors are often well studied, the underlying musculature facilitating them is poorly understood. Exemplars of unique avian courtship behaviors include species of the North American sage-grouse (Centrocercus). Each spring, males gather in leks where they perform courtship displays which incorporate species-specific sound production, nape feather movement, and importantly, the rais

Regulation of endothelin receptor expression by microRNAs in diabetes related erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the common complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), feathered by a complex vascular and endothelial pathogenesis and limited therapeutic options. Endothelin receptor type A (ETA), a key receptor for endothelin, mediates chronic and persistent contractile effects in the penile corpus cavernosum (CC), and is a potential target for ED treatment. Dysregulated microRNAs (miRNAs) have been implicated in the pathophysiology of ED, playing critical regulatory roles and suitable for drug development. This study investigates the role of dysregulated miRNAs in

Attitudes and opinions of Brazilian veterinarians towards the assessment and management of acute avian pain.

BACKGROUND: Veterinarians' approaches to the management of avian pain have been poorly documented despite the rising number of pet birds seen in clinical settings. METHODS: An online survey was advertised nationwide to recruit Brazilian veterinarians who had treated traumatic and surgical conditions in birds within the previous year. The survey comprised 25 closed or semi-closed questions divided into four sections (demographics, routinely performed medical procedures and pain recognition, drug choices for analgesia and challenges to pain treatment, and attitudes towards pain relief in birds)

Dietary Lactobacillus reuteri SL001 Improves Growth Performance, Health-Related Parameters, Intestinal Morphology and Microbiota of Broiler Chickens.

It was assumed that dietary inclusion of Lactobacillus reuteri SL001 isolated from the gastric contents of rabbits could act as an alternative to feed antibiotics to improve the growth performance of broiler chickens. We randomly assigned 360 one-day-old AA white-feathered chicks in three treatments: basal diet (control), basal diet plus zinc bacitracin (antibiotic), and basal diet plus L. reuteri SL001 (SL001) treatment. The results showed the total BW gain and average daily gain (ADG) of broilers in SL001 treatment increased significantly (p < 0.05, respectively) compared with the control gr

Methionine sources at different dietary levels alters the growth and expression of genes related to homocysteine remethylation in the jejunum of broilers.

Sulfur amino acids are essential for the proper development of broilers and are required throughout the bird's life to perform important physiological functions. Studies that seek to understand the actions of sulfur amino acids in the body of birds are essential. The present study evaluated the influence of sulfur amino acid supplementation using DL-Methionine (DL-Met) and DL-Methionine hydroxy analogue (DL-HMTBA), on the performance and expression of genes related to methionine metabolism, in the jejunum of broilers. Four hundred and fifty male broilers (Cobb-700 slow feathering) were distrib

Preparation and Characterization of a Nano-Inclusion Complex of Quercetin with β-Cyclodextrin and Its Potential Activity on Cancer Cells.

Quercetin (QRC), a flavonoid found in foods and plants such as red wine, onions, green tea, apples, and berries, possesses remarkable anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. These properties make it effective in combating cancer cells, reducing inflammation, protecting against heart disease, and regulating blood sugar levels. To enhance the potential of inclusion complexes (ICs) containing β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) in cancer therapy, they were transformed into nano-inclusion complexes (NICs). In this research, NICs were synthesized using ethanol as a reducing agent in the nanoprecipitation p

The genetics and evolution of eye color in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

The eye color of birds, generally referring to the color of the iris, results from both pigmentation and structural coloration. Avian iris colors exhibit striking interspecific and intraspecific variations that correspond to unique evolutionary and ecological histories. Here, we identified the genetic basis of pearl (white) iris color in domestic pigeons (Columba livia) to explore the largely unknown genetic mechanism underlying the evolution of avian iris coloration. Using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) approach in 92 pigeons, we mapped the pearl iris trait to a 9 kb region containing
