Associations between vegetarianism, body mass index, and eating disorders/disordered eating behaviours: a systematic review of literature.

The vegetarian diet is becoming increasingly popular among the general population and has been accompanied by an increasing number of publications in the last twenty years. However, the spread of selective diets raises some questions, especially with regard to health. This review examines studies on vegetarianism published between 2000 and 2022 that investigated the associations between this diet, weight, and eating disorders. The descriptive studies conclude that vegetarians have a lower body mass index, and the interventional studies show the value of a vegetarian diet for weight loss. While

Young people exposure to antibiotics: Implication for health risk and the impact from eating habits of takeaway food.

Exposure to antibiotics, mainly from animal food ingestion, may have adverse effects on human health. Takeaway food is the preferred choice for the dietary of most Chinese young people nowadays, but the relationship between takeaway eating and antibiotic exposure is not yet adequately understood. In the present study, 297 young people were recruited to collect urine samples and questionnaires with an emphasis on their takeaway eating habits. The internal exposure to 16 antibiotics and three metabolites was measured in urine samples by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrom

Influence of pre-grazing herbage mass on bite mass, eating behaviour, and dairy cow performance on pasture.

Knowledge about individual daily herbage dry matter (DM) intake (DMI) helps identifying efficient dairy cows and adapting supplementation better to herbage intake and nutrient requirements of grazing dairy cows. With the aid of behavioural characteristics, raw data recorded with the RumiWatch (RW) system and processed with the RW converter 0.7.3.31 (C31), estimation of herbage DMI may be possible. First, C31, which allows differentiation of prehension bites and mastication chews, was validated through direct observation of behavioural characteristics and compared to the previous RW converter 0

Influence of infants' feeding patterns and duration on mothers' postpartum depression: A nationwide birth cohort -The Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS).

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is increasingly being promoted worldwide. Although several studies have examined breastfeeding and postpartum depression, contradictory results concerning their relationship have been found. This study investigated the influence of the feeding patterns of 1- to 6-month-old infants on maternal postpartum depression, as well as the influence of activities performed by mothers during feeding on postpartum depression. METHODS: We used data from parents and children who participated in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). The data were from 71,448 mothers wh

Animal performance, ingestive behavior, and carcass characteristics of grazing-finished steers supplemented with castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) meal protein.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of replacing soybean meal by castor bean meal on nutrient intake, digestibility, animal performance, ingestive behavior activities, carcass characteristics, and fatty acid profile from steers finished in pasture. Crossbred steers were weighed to determine the initial body weight (331.6 ± 37.4 kg), which were kept in 4 paddocks (8 animals/paddock), on pastures of Brachiaria decumbens during the finishing phase. Dietary treatments included CC00-without castor bean meal; CC33-153 g/kg of castor bean meal; CC66-308 g/kg of castor bean meal; and CC

The orbitofrontal cortex, food intake and obesity.

Obesity is a major health challenge facing many people throughout the world. Increased consumption of palatable, high-caloric foods is one of the major drivers of obesity. Both orexigenic and anorexic states have been thoroughly reviewed elsewhere; here, we focus on the cognitive control of feeding in the context of obesity, and how the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is implicated, based on data from preclinical and clinical research. The OFC is important in decision-making and has been heavily researched in neuropsychiatric illnesses such as addiction and obsessive–compulsive disorder. However, a

Restrictive eating across a spectrum from healthy to unhealthy: behavioral and neural mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Restriction of food intake is a central feature of anorexia nervosa (AN) and other eating disorders, yet also occurs in the absence of psychopathology. The neural mechanisms of restrictive eating in health and disease are unclear. METHODS: This study examined behavioral and neural mechanisms associated with restrictive eating among individuals with and without eating disorders. Dietary restriction was examined in four groups of women (n = 110): healthy controls, dieting healthy controls, patients with subthreshold (non-low weight) AN, and patients with AN. A Food Choice Task was a

Neural responses to visual food cues: insights from functional magnetic resonance imaging.

The aim of this paper is to describe the patterns of functional magnetic resonance imaging activation produced by visual food stimuli in healthy participants, as well as in those with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and obesity. We conducted a systematic review of studies published in the last decade on normal and abnormal eating. This review suggested the existence of neural differences in response to the sight of food between healthy individuals, those with an eating disorder and obese subjects. Differences were identified in two brain circuits: (i) limbic and parali

The validity of the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire: some critical remarks.

Recent debate has considered the validity of self-reports and laboratory-based behavioral measures of emotional eating. This paper reviews the literature on self-reported emotional eating and actual eating behavior (i.e., examines the concurrent validity). As detailed in the review, the literature suggests mixed findings on the correspondence between these self-reports and actual eating behavior. Based on this, we cite characteristics of studies that support the concurrent validity of the DEBQ and address possible reasons for the lack of concurrent validity in other studies, as well as concern

The psychobiology of comfort eating: implications for neuropharmacological interventions.

Comfort eating, that is eating induced by negative affect, has been a core theme of explanations for overeating and obesity. Psychobiological explanations and processes underlying comfort eating are examined, as well as its prevalence in clinical and nonclinical populations, to consider who may be susceptible, whether certain foods are comforting, and what the implications for treatment may be. Comfort eating may occur in a substantial minority, particularly in women and the obese. Human and animal theories and models of emotional or stress-induced eating show some convergence, and may incorpo

Seed-breaking forces exerted by orang-utans with their teeth in captivity and a new technique for estimating forces produced in the wild.

Orang-utans (Pongo pygmaeus) at the Singapore Zoological Gardens were presented with two thick-shelled edible seeds, Mezzettia parviflora (Annonaceae) and Macadamia ternifolia (Proteaceae) in order to estimate their maximum bite forces. The orang-utans could break the Macadamia seeds in one bite, while those of Mezzettia required repeated attempts. Examination of shell fragments showed that many had scratches and some had clear, but small (ca. 1-2 mm diameter), impressions on them. Building upon this information, semi-imitative tests were performed on the seeds in a universal testing machine b

Nutritional intervention: a key to child survival.

In a collaborative relationship, researchers from the Cebu Institute of Medicine and from the United States have carried out a series of longitudinal studies of breast feeding and infant growth in a rural Philippine community. On the basis of our findings, we have conducted field experiments designed to have mothers improve their infants' diets using locally available food. Contingent reinforcement strategies were used successfully to get mothers to change their behavior and beliefs about infant feeding practices. The use of reinforcements resulted in improved diets and very high rates of cont

Drunkorexia: A new term and diagnostic criteria.

Individuals who restrict their caloric intake and/or exercise excessively to mitigate the calories from alcohol consumption may suffer from an eating disorder, substance abuse disorder, or both. While the term "drunkorexia" has been used in both academic articles and popular culture, issues persist with respect to diagnosing and treating this condition. Classifying the behavior as a subcategory of Other Specified Feeding and Eating Disorders (OSFED) would provide patients with an increased likelihood of receiving insurance coverage for this condition. A consistent definition of this behavior a

Context-dependent mechanical reconfiguration is necessary for multifunctional behavior in an intrinsically confined hydrostat.

Muscular hydrostats, muscular structures lacking rigid skeletons, are ubiquitous in animals, but how they perform complex actions remains poorly understood. Understanding their function requires uncovering the mechanisms that couple and constrain their deformations. We investigated how mechanical reconfiguration from interacting shape-changing elements in the feeding system (buccal mass) of Aplysia facilitates different feeding behaviors. Combining analysis of MRI movies of Aplysia feeding with a new biomechanical model, we demonstrate how two context-dependent mechanical reconfigurations prod…

Interspecific Aggressions between Crested Porcupines and Roe Deer.

Despite being common amongst carnivore mammals, behavioral interference between wild herbivore species is poorly documented. Particularly, in temperate areas, where the ungulate guild is composed of a few species, and large-sized rodents are scarce, most cases of interspecific interactions involve at least one alien species. In this work, we report the first data on behavioral interactions between roe deer, Capreolus capreolus, and crested porcupine, Hystrix cristata. Aggressions by crested porcupines toward roe deer were observed in 34 out of 202 observations of both species feeding at the sa

Effects of buspirone on operant and nonoperant food intake in food deprived rats.

The effects of the clinically available 5-HT1A agonist, buspirone, were investigated on food intake in food-deprived rats in both nonoperant and operant feeding paradigms. Buspirone (0.5-2.0 mg/kg), administered subcutaneously (s.c.) 15 min prior to presentation of food, produced a dose-related inhibition of food intake in the nonoperant feeding paradigm. The main inhibitory effects of buspirone were apparent during the first 30 min after food presentation. Likewise, in the operant feeding paradigm, buspirone (0.25-1.0 mg/kg, s.c.) produced a dose-related suppression of food intake in the firs
