Investigating the Impact of Chronical Prenatal Alcohol Exposure on Fetal Vascular Development Across Pregnancy Stages Using Photoacoustic Tomography.

Prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) is a major contributor to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD), resulting in neurodevelopmental abnormalities. This study utilizes photoacoustic tomography (PAT) to investigate the effects of PAE on fetal brain vasculature in mice. PAT imaging was conducted from embryonic Day 10 (E10) to Day 20 (E20), aimed to compare two alcohol-exposed groups with a control group. Key vascular parameters, including blood vessel diameter and density, and oxygen saturation (sO2), were analyzed. Results show significant reductions in vessel size and density, as well as reduced

Maternal L-glutamine supplementation prevents prenatal alcohol exposure-induced fetal growth restriction in an ovine model.

Prenatal alcohol exposure is known to cause fetal growth restriction and disturbances in amino acid bioavailability. Alterations in these parameters can persist into adulthood and low birth weight can lead to altered fetal programming. Glutamine has been associated with the synthesis of other amino acids, an increase in protein synthesis and it is used clinically as a nutrient supplement for low birth weight infants. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of repeated maternal alcohol exposure and L-glutamine supplementation on fetal growth and amino acid bioavailability during the thi

Fetal alcohol syndrome: report of a case.

Fetal alcohol syndrome is an uncommon occurrence in Taiwan, especially in the southern area. We report here a case who demonstrated severe intrauterine growth retardation with major limb reduction, chest hypoplasia and characteristic facial dysmorphism-short palpebral fissures, hypoplastic philtrum, and a thin upper lip. The mother had been consuming large quantities of alcohol, 6 bottles of "rice wine" per day (800 grams of absolute alcohol per day) during the pregnancy. The maternal serum level of ethanol was as high as 173 mg/dl. According to previous reports, we causally suggest that mater

Trajectories of prenatal alcohol exposure and behavioral outcomes: Findings from a community-based sample.

OBJECTIVE: To characterize patterns of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE), and determine whether PAE trajectories were associated with behavior from a community-based sample of first-grade children. METHODS: Using data collected as part of the Collaboration of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Prevalence study (n = 1663), we performed longitudinal cluster analysis on prenatal alcohol use reported for four time points around conception and pregnancy. From the sample, 638 respondents reported any alcohol use in pregnancy and were included in trajectories for average daily and maximum drinks per dri…

Quantifying harms to others due to alcohol consumption in Germany: a register-based study.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of alcohol increases the risk of drinkers harming others. The extent of alcohol's morbidity and mortality harms to others in Germany in 2014 was estimated for (1) fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) among newborns, (2) road traffic fatalities, and (3) interpersonal violence-related deaths. METHODS: The incidences of FAS and FASD were estimated by means of a meta-analytical approach, combining data on alcohol use during pregnancy and the risk relationship between alcohol consumption during pregnancy and FAS/FASD. In order to estim…

Preventing alcohol-exposed pregnancies: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal alcohol exposure is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disabilities in the United States. DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial (2002-2005; data analyzed 2005-2006) of a brief motivational intervention to reduce the risk of an alcohol-exposed pregnancy (AEP) in preconceptional women by focusing on both risk drinking and ineffective contraception use. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A total of 830 nonpregnant women, aged 18-44 years, and currently at risk for an AEP were recruited in six diverse settings in Florida, Texas, and Virginia. Combined settings

Alcohol and pregnancy: highlights from three decades of research.

The detrimental effects of alcohol on offspring have been alluded to for centuries, although only in the past few decades has the relationship between alcohol and birth defects been shown conclusively. This review article begins with a historical overview of the understanding of alcohol's effects on the offspring, followed by a description of the first clinical reports of fetal alcohol syndrome. The contribution of animal models is highlighted and some possible mechanisms of alcohol's teratogenicity are discussed. Challenges and opportunities for future research are offered.

What's the harm in just a drink?

A major characteristic of prenatal alcohol intake is a subsequent birth weight decrement. Experimental animal work has demonstrated that nutritional effects apart, there is a strong, direct alcohol effect responsible for this decrement. Consistency in this effect of birth weight decrement has been demonstrated in a range of species. Early work with animals had equally demonstrated that this effect can be transitory and that catch up is possible. Quite recently, human studies have supported such animal findings to the extent that now we need to question even more strongly our approach required

[The individual sociomedical problems of alcoholism].

Some remarks on the individual medical and social problem of alcoholism are presented. The most significant epidemiological data are reported and the most frequently observed medical complications, namely liver, pancreatic, gastroenteric impairment, alcohol and cardiovascular diseases, alcohol and pregnancy, are analysed. Some general remarks are then offered regarding the alcoholism phenomenon, the concepts of physical/mental health and alcoholism are examined and the personality of the alcoholic is analysed.

[Are children with alcohol embryopathy latent alcoholics? A study of the risk for developing dependence].

Within 3 years 48 caretakers and parents of children with fetal alcohol syndrome were asked about the childrens experience and contact with alcohol. The children were mainly raised in foster and adoptive families (40/48 cases), where usually moderate or restricted consumption of alcohol was common. The children were between 4-18 years (means = 7; 5) of age. In 5 children alcohol consumption was observed once or several times. Some children showed signs of increased desire for drinking alcohol. A substance related addiction was never observed until now. Nevertheless the risk of addiction develo
