TGF-alpha, EGF, and their cognate EGF receptor are co-expressed with desmin during embryonic, fetal, and neonatal myogenesis in mouse tongue development.

The developing mouse tongue provides a model for discrete patterns of morphogenesis during short periods of embryonic development. Occipital somite-derived myogenic cells interact with cranial neural crest-derived ecto-mesenchymal cells to form the musculature of the tongue. The biochemical signals that control close range autocrine and/or paracrine signaling processes required to establish the fast-twitch complex tongue musculature are not known. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that desmin, epidermal growth factor (EGF), and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF alpha) a

ATRA influences the differentiation and fusion of myoblasts by regulating Rarα/Pitx2, leading to abnormal development of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) in fetal rats.

Anorectal malformation (ARM) is the most common congenital digestive tract anomaly in newborns, and children with ARM often have varying degrees of underdevelopment of the pelvic floor muscles (PFMs). To explore the effects of Rarα (NR1B1) and Pitx2 on the development of rat PFMs, we constructed a rat ARM animal model using all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA), and verified the expression of Rarα and Pitx2 in the PFMs of fetal rats. Additionally, we used rat myoblasts (L6 cells) to investigate the regulatory roles of Rarα and Pitx2 in skeletal muscle myoblast differentiation and their interactions.

Second trimester quad test for fetal down syndrome screening as a predictor of spontaneous preterm birth in a developing country: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between second-trimester serum biomarkers of Quad test (comprising alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), free β-hCG, unconjugated estriol (uE3), and inhibin-A (IhA)) and spontaneous preterm birth, and to develop a predictive model based on Quad test analysis. METHODS: A cohort study was conducted using a prospectively collected database of singleton pregnancies undergoing routine Quad test screening. Serum biomarker levels were adjusted for covariates and expressed as multiples of the median. Pregnancy outcomes were followed up. Logistic regression was used to assess

The Effect of Maternal Stress on 11beta-Hydroxysteroid Dehydrogenase Activity During Pregnancy: Evidence for Potential Pregnancy Complications and Consequences on Fetal Development and Metabolism.

Τhe intrauterine environment has a strong connection with the growing fetus and possible effects that can continue up to adulthood. Currently, stress is conceptualized as a modern teratogen. The overwhelming majority of studies indicate that maternal stress during pregnancy may have effects on pregnancy outcomes and fetal development, with long-lasting consequences on child and adult vulnerability to disease. Glucocorticoids are essential for regulating fetal development, growth, and metabolism. The two isoforms of 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzyme (11β-HSD) mediate and regulate gluco…

Towards a Distinct Sleep and Behavioural Profile of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD): A Comparison between FASD, Autism and Typically Developing Children.

BACKGROUND: The term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) describes a range of neurodevelopmental conditions, the direct result of prenatal alcohol exposure. FASD encompasses a range of behavioural, cognitive and sleep patterns that are sometimes indiscernible from other neurodevelopmental conditions, one in particular being Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). This study aimed to provide a comparison of behavioural, cognitive, affect-related and sleep profiles in children aged between 6 and 15 years with diagnoses of FASD or ASD, in contrast to typically developing (TD) children. METHODS: We

Abnormal growth and morphogenesis of placenta at term is linked to adverse fetal development after perigestational alcohol consumption up to early gestation in mouse.

BACKGROUND: Gestation alcohol consumption produces fetal growth restriction and malformations by affecting the embryo-fetal development. Recently a relationship between abnormal placentation and fetal malformation and intrauterine growth retardation has been suggested. However, the effects of perigestational alcohol ingestion up to early pregnancy on the placenta at term and its association with fetal abnormalities are little known. METHODS: In female mice, ethanol 10% in water was administered for 15 days previous and up to days 4 (D4), 8 (D8), or 10 (D10) of gestation (TF), and gestation co…

Covariation Between Brain Function (MEG) and Structure (DTI) Differentiates Adolescents with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder from Typically Developing Controls.

The behavioral, cognitive, and sensory difficulties experienced by individuals exposed to alcohol prenatally currently fail to provide early identification for fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Attempting to advance this pursuit through a multivariate analysis, we collected magnetoencephalography (MEG) data during auditory, somatosensory, visual paradigms, DTI, and behavior in adolescents ages 12-21 years (FASD: N = 13; HC: N = 20). We assessed the relationship between brain function (MEG) and structure (fractional anisotropy (FA)) utilizing joint independent component analysis (jICA), a

Expression of growth differentiation factor 6 in the human developing fetal spine retreats from vertebral ossifying regions and is restricted to cartilaginous tissues.

During embryogenesis vertebral segmentation is initiated by sclerotomal cell migration and condensation around the notochord, forming anlagen of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs. The factors that govern the segmentation are not clear. Previous research demonstrated that mutations in growth differentiation factor 6 resulted in congenital vertebral fusion, suggesting this factor plays a role in development of vertebral column. In this study, we detected expression and localization of growth differentiation factor 6 in human fetal spinal column, especially in the period of early ossifica

Alternative mechanisms for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and persistence: could RSV be transmitted through the placenta and persist into developing fetal lungs?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) represents the most common respiratory pathogen observed worldwide in infants and young children and may play a role in the inception of recurrent wheezing and asthma in childhood. We discuss herein the recent hypothesis that RSV vertically transmitted from the mother to the fetus in utero causes persistent structural and functional changes in the developing lungs of the offspring, thereby predisposing to postnatal airway obstruction. RECENT FINDINGS: A number of observations in humans support the notion that extrapulmonary tissues may be i

Observation of classroom social communication: do children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders spend their time differently than their typically developing peers?

PURPOSE: In this research, the authors examined how social communication profiles during classroom activities differed between children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) and typically developing pair-matched peers. METHOD: Twelve pairs of children were observed in their classrooms 20 min a day for 4 days across 2 weeks. Coders documented classroom social communication by recording performance on handheld computers using the Social Communication Coding System (L. B. Olswang, L. Svensson, T. E. Coggins, J. The capacity of primordial follicles in fetal bovine ovaries to initiate growth in vitro develops during mid-gestation and is associated with meiotic arrest of oocytes.

In cattle and other species in which the pool of resting, primordial follicles is formed during fetal life, little is known about the regulation of the early stages of ovarian follicular development. We used histological morphometry and a combination of observations in vivo and experiments in vitro to study the timing and regulation of follicle formation and the acquisition of the capacity of primordial follicles to initiate growth in cattle. In vivo, primordial, primary, and secondary follicles were first observed around Days 90, 140, and 210 of gestation, respectively. The long interval betw

The fetal development of the human uterine cervix from the 12th to the 31st postmenstrual week as revealed by scanning electron microscopy. Anatomical and clinical correlations.

To clarify the differentiation of the human uterine cervix, fetuses of the 12th, 15th, 18th, 20th, 21st, 22nd, and 31st postmenstrual week were studied by Scanning Electron Microscopy. At the 12th week the endocervical epithelium consisted of microvillous cells, often showing single cilia and anlages of tubular glands. At the 15th week the cervical canal was entirely formed and its surface cells appeared columnar. At the 18th week these cells were replaced by flat or slightly raised cells, provided with thin microplicae. At the 20th week the endocervical epithelium appeared pseudostratified wi

Widespread neuronal degeneration in rats following oral administration of methylmercury during the postnatal developing phase: a model of fetal-type minamata disease.

The neurotoxicity of methylmercury (MeHg) treatment during the postnatal developing phase in rats was studied. Rats on postnatal day 1 were orally administered 5 mg/kg/day methylmercury chloride (MMC) for more than 30 consecutive days. Body weight loss began 26 days after MMC was administered, and severe paralysis of the hind-limbs and unsteadiness appeared subsequently. Histopathologically, the widespread neuronal degeneration was observed in the cerebral neocortex, neostriatum, red nucleus, brainstem, cerebellum and spinal dorsal root ganglia on day 32. The widespread distribution of the les

The length of the cervix and the risk of spontaneous premature delivery. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit Network.

BACKGROUND: The role of the cervix in the pathogenesis of premature delivery is controversial. In a prospective, multicenter study of pregnant women, we used vaginal ultrasonography to measure the length of the cervix; we also documented the incidence of spontaneous delivery before 35 weeks' gestation. METHODS: At 10 university-affiliated prenatal clinics, we performed vaginal ultrasonography at approximately 24 and 28 weeks of gestation in women with singleton pregnancies. We then assessed the relation between the length of the cervix and the risk of spontaneous preterm delivery. RESULTS: W

Emotion awareness and perceptions of parental response to emotion in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: development and preliminary testing of the Qualitative Emotion Interview.

BACKGROUND: Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) are a set of neurodevelopmental differences associated with prenatal exposure to alcohol. Emotion regulation is a core challenge often seen in FASD. The ability to recognize and label emotional experiences, as well as parent response to emotion, is important in the development of emotion regulation, yet little is known about these constructs in young children with FASD. AIMS: To develop and pilot the Qualitative Emotion Interview (QEI), a novel interview-based measure assessing children's experiences and understanding of their own emotions a
