The prevalence of lymphatic filariasis infection and disease following six rounds of mass drug administration in Mandalay Region, Myanmar.

Lymphatic filariasis is widely endemic in Myanmar. Despite the establishment of an elimination program in 2000, knowledge of the remaining burden of disease relies predominantly on programmatic information. To assist the program, we conducted an independent cross-sectional household cluster survey to determine the prevalence of filariasis infection, morbidity and mass-drug administration coverage in four townships of the Mandalay Region: Amarapura, Patheingyi, Tada-U and Wundwin. The survey included 1014 individuals from 430 randomly selected households in 24 villages. Household members one ye

Increasing compliance with mass drug administration programs for lymphatic filariasis in India through education and lymphedema management programs.

BACKGROUND: Nearly 45% of people living at risk for lymphatic filariasis (LF) worldwide live in India. India has faced challenges obtaining the needed levels of compliance with its mass drug administration (MDA) program to interrupt LF transmission, which utilizes diethylcarbamazine (DEC) or DEC plus albendazole. Previously identified predictors of and barriers to compliance with the MDA program were used to refine a pre-MDA educational campaign. The objectives of this study were to assess the impact of these refinements and of a lymphedema morbidity management program on MDA compliance. METH

Towards elimination of lymphatic filariasis: social mobilization issues and challenges in mass drug administration with anti-filarial drugs in Tamil Nadu, South India.

India is a signatory to World Health Assembly resolution for elimination of lymphatic filariasis (LF) and National Health Policy has set the goal of LF elimination by 2015. Annual mass drug administration (MDA) is ongoing in endemic districts since 1996-97. Compliance rate is a crucial factor in achieving elimination and was assessed in three districts of Tamil Nadu for 10th and 11th treatment rounds (TRs). An in-depth study assessed the impact of social mobilization by drug distributors (DDs) in two areas from each of the three districts. Overall coverage and compliance for assessed TRs were

Strengthening of mass drug administration implementation is required to eliminate lymphatic filariasis from India: an evaluation study.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The mass drug administration (MDA) is one of the strategies to eliminate lymphatic filariasis in India. Eleven districts are endemic for the disease in Madhya Pradesh state of India, which conduct MDA activities annually. A mid-term evaluation was conducted with the objectives to review the progress of the single dose of di-ethyl-carbamazine (DEC) administration, and to understand the functioning of the programme to recommend mid-term amendments. METHODS: A qualitative cross-sectional study was conducted in three endemic districts of Madhya Pradesh between July and Oc

A community-based trial for the control of lymphatic filariasis and iodine deficiency using salt fortified with diethylcarbamazine and iodine.

To evaluate the effectiveness of salt fortified with diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and iodine for elimination of Bancroftian filariasis and iodine deficiency, all consenting residents of Miton, Haiti (n = 1,932) were given salt fortified with 0.25% diethylcarbamazine and 25 ppm of iodine for one year. Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaria prevalence and intensity, antigenemia, and urinary iodine were measured before and one year after salt distribution began. To measure the effect of DEC-fortified salt on adult worm motility, 15 microfilaria-positive men were examined by ultrasound of the scrotal area.

Effectiveness of annual single doses of diethylcarbamazine citrate among bancroftian filariasis infected individuals in an endemic area under mass drug administration in Brazil.

The Global Program to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis has achieved extraordinary success in reducing transmission and preventing morbidity through mass drug administration (MDA) to the population at-risk. Brazil is the only currently using diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) alone for MDA, so an assessment of its effectiveness is needed. We report the trends of filarial markers in a cohort of 175 individuals infected with Wuchereria bancrofti in areas that underwent MDA in the city of Olinda, Northeastern Brazil. The prospective study was conducted between 2007 and 2012 (corresponding to five annu

How Thailand eliminated lymphatic filariasis as a public health problem.

BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis is endemic in nine of the eleven Member States of the World Health Organization South East Asia Region. This article describes the intensive interventions with the National Programme for Elimination of Lymphatic Filariasis in Thailand since its launch in 2001 till the validation of its elimination in 2017. METHODS: A baseline epidemiological survey was initiated in 2001 to identify both brugian and bancroftian filarial areas and delineate its endemicity. Mass drug administration (MDA) with diethylcarbamazine citrate (DEC) and albendazole (ALB) was implemented

Virtual screening of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) database: identification of fragment-like lead molecules for filariasis target asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a vector borne infectious disease caused by the nematode Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. Over 120 million people are affected by LF in the world, of which two-thirds are in Asia. The infection restricts the normal flow of lymph from the infected area resulting in swelling of the extremities and causing permanent disability. As the available drugs for the treatment of LF are becoming ineffective due to the development of resistance, there is an urgent need to find new leads for drug development. In this study, asparaginyl-tRNA synthetase (Asn

Use of P-glycoprotein gene probes to investigate anthelmintic resistance in Haemonchus contortus and comparison with Onchocerca volvulus.

A P-glycoprotein gene probe from the sheep parasitic nematode Haemonchus contortus was developed and used to analyse restriction fragment length polymorphisms between susceptible isolates and isolates resistant to either benzimidazole; levamisole and benzimidazole; or benzimidazole, ivermectin and closantel. No polymorphism could be correlated with any of the different resistances. A P-glycoprotein gene probe was also isolated from the human nematode parasite Onchocerca volvulus and an Onchocerca-specific PCR was developed.
