Pulsed Electric Field Induces Significant Changes in the Metabolome of Fusarium Species and Decreases Their Viability and Toxigenicity.

Fusarium fungi are widespread pathogens of food crops, primarily associated with the formation of mycotoxins. Therefore, effective mitigation strategies for these toxicogenic microorganisms are required. In this study, the potential of pulsed electric field (PEF) as an advanced technology of increasing use in the food processing industry was investigated to minimize the viability of Fusarium pathogens and to characterize the PEF-induced changes at the metabolomic level. Spores of four Fusarium species (Fusarium culmorum, Fusarium graminearum, Fusarium poae, and Fusarium sporotrichioides) were

Rapid enrichment and SERS differentiation of various bacteria in skin interstitial fluid by 4-MPBA-AuNPs-functionalized hydrogel microneedles.

Bacterial infection is a major threat to global public health, and can cause serious diseases such as bacterial skin infection and foodborne diseases. It is essential to develop a new method to rapidly diagnose clinical multiple bacterial infections and monitor food microbial contamination in production sites in real-time. In this work, we developed a 4-mercaptophenylboronic acid gold nanoparticles (4-MPBA-AuNPs)-functionalized hydrogel microneedle (MPBA-H-MN) for bacteria detection in skin interstitial fluid. MPBA-H-MN could conveniently capture and enrich a variety of bacteria within 5 min.

Thread-Based Bienzymatic Biosensor for Linoleic Acid Detection.

The concentration of nonesterified fatty acids (NEFAs) in biological media is associated with metabolic and cardiovascular disorders (e.g., diabetes, cancer, and cystic fibrosis) and in food products is indicative of their quality. Therefore, the early identification of NEFAs is crucial for both medical diagnosis and food quality assessment. However, the development of a portable and scalable sensor capable of detecting these compounds at a low cost presents challenges due to their considerable chemical and physical stability. This research endeavors to illustrate the viability of detecting li

The Difference between PC-Based and Immersive Virtual Reality Food Purchase Environments on Useability, Presence, and Physiological Responses.

Computer simulations used to study food purchasing behavior can be separated into low immersion virtual environments (LIVE), which use personal computers and standard monitors to display a scene, and high immersion virtual environments (HIVE) which use virtual reality technology such as head-mounted displays to display a scene. These methods may differ in their ability to create feelings of presence or cybersickness that would influence the usefulness of these approaches. In this present study, thirty-one adults experienced a virtual supermarket or fast-food restaurant using a LIVE system or a

Facile construction of sandwich ELISA based on double-nanobody for specific detection of α-hemolysin in food samples.

α-hemolysin (Hla), a toxin secreted by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), has been proved to be involved in the occurrence and aggravation of food poisoning. Hence, it is quite essential to establish its rapid detection methods to guarantee food safety. Sandwich ELISA based on nanobody is well known to be viable for toxins, but there is absence of nanobody against Hla, let alone a pair for it. Therefore, in this paper, we screened specific nanobodies by bio-panning and obtained the optimal nanobody pair for sandwich ELISA firstly. Then, RANbody, a novel nanobody owning both recognition and cat

Highly penetrative, drug-loaded nanocarriers improve treatment of glioblastoma.

Current therapy for glioblastoma multiforme is insufficient, with nearly universal recurrence. Available drug therapies are unsuccessful because they fail to penetrate through the region of the brain containing tumor cells and they fail to kill the cells most responsible for tumor development and therapy resistance, brain cancer stem cells (BCSCs). To address these challenges, we combined two major advances in technology: (i) brain-penetrating polymeric nanoparticles that can be loaded with drugs and are optimized for intracranial convection-enhanced delivery and (ii) repurposed compounds, pre

Application of Omics Technologies for Cowpea Improvement.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) is a vital crop for food security, nutrition, and climate resilience in sub-Saharan African and other semi-arid regions. However, its improvement is constrained by the complexity of polygenic traits such as drought tolerance, pest resistance, and seed quality. Conventional breeding, while foundational, remains insufficient to address these challenges at the required pace. Recent advances in multi-omics technologies, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, provide new opportunities to dissect complex traits, identify candidate genes, and acc
