Flexible fixation has been described and utilized in various aspects of foot and ankle surgery over the past several decades. In regards to ankle surgery, flexible fixation devices have been used for stabilization of the ankle syndesmosis and augmentation of lateral collateral ankle ligament repair. In the foot, flexible fixation devices have been incorporated into hallux valgus or varus correction, Lisfranc injury repair, and more recently spring ligament repair augmentation. This article reviews the various applications for flexible fixation in foot and ankle surgery, as well as evidence-bas…

Early avascular necrosis of metatarsal heads and cuboid injuries are uncommon conditions encountered by foot and ankle specialists. Treatment options are limited and typically include long periods of offloading or non-weightbearing. There is limited published information on alternative treatment approaches for such pathologies when conservative therapies fail. Presented are 2 patient cases treated with a percutaneous calcium phosphate injection after failure of standard therapy, persistent pain, and bone marrow edema in the foot.

Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are a serious complication of diabetes that results in significant morbidity and mortality. Mortality rates associated with the development of a DFU are estimated to be 5% in the first 12 months, and 5-year morality rates have been estimated at 42%. The standard practices in DFU management include surgical debridement, dressings to facilitate a moist wound environment and exudate control, wound off-loading, vascular assessment, and infection and glycemic control. These practices are best coordinated by a multidisciplinary diabetic foot wound clinic. Even with this c…

The surgical treatment of diabetic patients can be challenging. The physiologic and metabolic abnormalities seen in diabetic patients can adversely affect healing and outcomes in even the simplest of procedures. This article examines some of the special considerations in the treatment of diabetic patients undergoing foot and ankle surgeries.

Injuries to the ankle and foot are common in the young athlete, especially with increasing participation and high levels of competitiveness in youth sports programs. Knowledge of the normal development of the foot and ankle is crucial to understand age-specific injury patterns because acute or chronic/repetitive stress to the developing skeleton results in injuries that differ from those seen in adults. Congenital abnormalities may also predispose children to increased risk of injury and pain. Radiologists must be aware of these distinctions to diagnose and classify injuries correctly for opti…

Bone tumors are relatively rare in the foot and ankle region. Many of them present as cystic lesions on plain films. Due to the relative rarity of these lesions and the complex anatomy of the foot and ankle region, identification of such lesions is often delayed or they get misdiagnosed and mismanaged. This review discusses the most common cystic tumors of the foot and ankle including their radiographic features and principles of management.

REVIEW QUESTION/OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to determine the best available evidence on the most effective treatment of Madura foot.
INTRODUCTION: Madura foot or mycetoma is a chronic granulomatous soft-tissue infection that is endemic to several regions of Africa and Asia. It may be of fungal (eumycetoma) or bacterial (actinomycetoma) origin, warranting therapy with either antifungal or antibacterial medication as well as surgery. Without timely intervention, it often results in lifelong disability. However, it is unclear what regimes are most effective for treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine effects of usage and demographics on damage to the Jaipur Foot prosthesis as well as the epidemiology and etiology of amputations performed at Santokba Durlabjhi Memorial Hospital (SDMH) in Jaipur, India.
DESIGN: Total time spent standing, total time spent wearing and total distance walked were compared against severity and location of damage to the prosthesis. Time between initial fitting and follow-up visit for damaged prosthetic was also considered in this analysis. A novel damage severity scale based on prosthesis functionality is presen…

Our subject is a 36-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with bilateral lower extremity amputation at the level of the distal third of the tibia after a car accident. Surgery was planned for below-knee amputation of the right lower extremity and replantation of the left foot. The arteries dissected from the iatrogenically amputated segment were used as grafts to repair vascular gaps during the replantation. The patient's follow-up had been problem free. We concluded that whenever possible, amputated parts unsuitable for replantation should be examined thoroughly and neurovasc…

Traumatic injury to the foot and ankle can result in long-term disability, which may have substantial negative implications on a patient's functional outcomes and quality of life. The diagnosis and appropriate management of these challenging injuries are not always agreed on or straightforward. In particular, the appropriate diagnosis and management of distal tibiofibular syndesmotic injuries as well as the surgical approach and role of primary subtalar arthrodesis for intra-articular calcaneal fractures are controversial.

Disorders of the foot and ankle are some of the most frequent ones affecting the musculoskeletal system and have a great impact on patients' quality of life. Accurate diagnosis is an important clinical challenge because of the complex anatomy and function of the foot, that make it difficult to locate the source of the pain by routine clinical examination. In the study of foot pathology, anatomical imaging (radiography, magnetic resonance imaging [MRI], ultrasound and computed tomography [CT]) and functional imaging (bone scan, positron emission tomography [PET] and MRI) techniques have been us…

INTRODUCTION AND AIM: Down syndrome (DS) is associated with numerous developmental abnormalities, some of which cause dysfunctions of the posture and the locomotor system. The analysis of selected features of the foot structure in boys with DS versus their peers without developmental disorders is done.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The podoscopic examination was performed on 30 boys with DS aged 14-15 years. A control group consisted of 30 age- and gender-matched peers without DS.
RESULTS: The feet of boys with DS are flatter compared to their healthy peers. The hallux valgus angle is not the most …

BACKGROUND: In East Asia, the foot is the most common site of cutaneous melanoma. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences between cutaneous melanoma of the foot and melanomas of other sites.
METHODS: We studied 52 patients who underwent surgical treatment for cutaneous melanoma of the foot from September 2000 to January 2015. Through a retrospective review of their medical records, we collected data relating to their sex, age, histopathological subtype, Clark level, tumor thickness, lymph node involvement, stage, and survival rate, and we compared these parameters to thos…

The greatest proportion of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) clinical research has been dedicated to elucidating pathogenesis and enhancing vaccine protection in cattle with less efforts invested in studies specific to pigs. However, accumulated evidence from FMD outbreaks and experimental investigations suggest that critical components of FMD pathogenesis, immunology, and vaccinology cannot be extrapolated from investigations performed in cattle to explain or to predict outcomes of infection or vaccination in pigs. Furthermore, it has been shown that failure to account for these differences may ha…
