Intraneural angioleiomyoma of the median nerve presenting as a forearm mass: A case report.

Angioleiomyoma is a solitary form of leiomyoma which is typically encountered in the subcutis. They are mostly seen in lower extremities, and the upper extremity is the second most common location for these lesions. There are only a few reports about the presence of an angioleiomyoma within a peripheral nerve in the upper extremity. Here we report a 56-year-old male patient who was referred to our clinic after an attempt was made for removal of a forearm mass at another institution. The lesion was encased within the median nerve and there was an unusual hypervascularity around the tumor with n…

A low-cost ultrasound model for simulation of paediatric distal forearm fractures.

BACKGROUND: Forearm injuries are a common presentation to the emergency department. Point-of-care ultrasound has been demonstrated to be an accurate and well-tolerated tool in the diagnosis of non-angulated paediatric distal forearm fractures. Ultrasound model simulation is a practical alternative for ultrasound education. AIMS: To describe the construction and validation of a low-cost ultrasound model for the simulation of non-angulated paediatric buckle and greenstick distal forearm fractures, for the educational instruction of healthcare providers. MATERIALS & METHODS: The materials for t…

Patterns of paediatric forearm fractures at a level I trauma centre in KSA.

OBJECTIVES: The current literature does not clearly elaborate the pattern of paediatric forearm fractures. This study aims to identify patterns of paediatric forearm fractures in KSA. METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted in a level I trauma centre. The study population comprised patients up to 18 years of age who presented with forearm fractures between 2007 and 2015. The demographic data of the recruited patients were obtained from medical files, and fractures were identified using plain films. Mean and standard deviations were used for continuous variables, whereas frequencies an…

An Orthopaedic Robotic-Assisted Rehabilitation Method of the Forearm in Virtual Reality Physiotherapy.

The use of robotic rehabilitation in orthopaedics has been briefly explored. Despite its possible advantages, the use of computer-assisted p … cising and integrates virtual reality games conceived explicitly for assisting the treatment of the forearm after injuries at the wrist or elbow joints. The present methodology represents a new approach to assisted physiotherapy for strength and motion recovery of wrist pronation/supination and elbow flexion-extension movements. We design specific game sc …

Bilateral Forearm Pseudotumors in an Adult with Hemophilia A and Ollier Disease: A Case Report.

CASE: A 29-year-old man with mild hemophilia A and Ollier disease presented with bilateral atraumatic forearm pseudotumors. Both forearm pseudotumors were successfully treated surgically with staged radical extirpation and factor VIII replacement therapy. CONCLUSION: Pseudotumors typically occur in adolescents with severe, poorly controlled hemophilia A. The development of factor VIII replacement therapy has progressively reduced the incidence of pseudotumors in patients in the developed world. No standardized therapy exists for pseudotumors that continue to bleed into the muscles despite non…

The diagnostic value of hyperammonaemia induced by the non-ischaemic forearm exercise test.

AIMS: The non-ischaemic forearm exercise test (NIFET) is used as a diagnostic tool for the screening of patients with exercise intolerance and for the diagnosis of various metabolic muscle disorders. The production of lactate and ammonia are generally analysed to guide the diagnosis. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the level of ammonia rise, which can be suggestive of a muscle disease. METHODS: This retrospective study involved 1440 patients who underwent NIFET. The clinical files of the patients with hyperammonaemia were methodically studied. Normal values were derived f…

Childhood Obesity Increases the Risk of Failure in the Treatment of Distal Forearm Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a national problem that has gained significant attention in both the medical literature and the national media. Obesity in the adult population has been associated with increased failure of conservative treatments. Our hypothesis is that childhood obesity is associated with a loss of reduction after closed treatment of distal radius fractures. METHODS: A total of 157 patients with consecutive distal radius fractures who underwent closed reduction in the emergency department or the operating room were included from the office records of the sole pediatric ortho

Management of Pediatric Forearm Torus Fractures: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric forearm torus fracture, a frequent reason for emergency department visits, can be immobilized by both rigid cast and nonrigid methods. However, controversy still exists regarding the optimal treatment of the disease. The aim of this study was to compare, in a systematic review, clinical efficacy of rigid cast with nonrigid methods for immobilization of the pediatric forearm torus fractures. METHODS: Literature search was performed of PubMed and Cochrane Library by 2 independent reviewers to identify randomized controlled trials comparing rigid cast with nonrigid methods …

Bedside Ultrasound vs X-Ray for the Diagnosis of Forearm Fractures in Children.

BACKGROUND: Painful forearm injuries after a fall occur frequently in children. X-ray study is currently the gold standard investigation. Ultrasound (US) is a potential alternative that avoids exposure to ionizing radiation and may be less painful than x-ray study; and familiarity and skill with US is increasing among emergency physicians. OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of this study was to determine if a cohort of physicians with little or no previous experience with US could, after a short training program, safely exclude forearm fractures in children. Secondary aims were to compare any pain o…

Forearm Muscle Activity in Lateral Epicondylalgia: A Systematic Review with Quantitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylalgia (LE) refers to pain at the lateral elbow and is associated with sensory and motor impairments that may impact on neuromuscular control and coordination. OBJECTIVE: This review aimed to systematically identify and analyse the literature related to the comparison of neuromuscular control of forearm muscles between individuals with and without LE. METHODS: A comprehensive search of electronic databases and reference lists using keywords relating to neuromuscular control and LE was undertaken. Studies that investigated electromyography (EMG) measures of forearm…

Pedicled Breast Flap for Soft Tissue Coverage of a Forearm Blast Injury.

This article presents the case of a 35-year-old woman who sustained a shotgun blast injury to the left forearm and chest wall causing significant soft tissue loss of the extensor compartment. The patient suffered a Gustilo IIIB open radial shaft fracture requiring orthopedic stabilization and plastic surgery intervention. As a result, the patient eventually was reconstructed with the use of a pedicled breast flap. Because of the patient's macromastia and her large forearm wound and morbid obesity, an individualized approach was developed such that a breast flap was designed because of its prox…

The use of the radial styloid in the extended osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap.

BACKGROUND: The osteocutaneous radial forearm free flap (OC-RFFF) remains a useful tool in head and neck reconstruction; however, it can be challenging to harvest sufficient bone for large reconstructions. The extended OC-RFFF is a modification that involves harvest of the distal border of the radius to the tip of the styloid. This increases the length of the bone flap by 2 cm to 3 cm, and the inherent contour of the styloid can be used to reconstruct the anterior curvature of the mandible or maxilla without additional osteotomies that may reduce blood supply. METHODS: The key steps in harves…

Pre- and postoperative complications of adult forearm fractures treated with plate fixation.

INTRODUCTION: Adult forearm fractures account for 1-2% of all fractures of the limbs. The main objective of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate pre- and postoperative complications of forearm fractures. The secondary objective was to evaluate functional and radiological results of plate osteosynthesis for these fractures. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between January 2008 and March 2014, 131 forearm fractures were reviewed retrospectively. Fractures were classified preoperatively according to the AO classification. Clinical outcomes were classified into four categories according to t…
