BACKGROUND: Complications of polyacrylamide hydrogel injection for augmentation mammaplasty have captured the attention of both medical experts and the general public in China. Increasing numbers of patients are seeking to have the polyacrylamide gel removed from their breasts regardless of whether they suffer from symptoms. Blunt aspiration, which is widely performed but removes only free hydrogel, leaves residual hydrogel in the breast. We report and discuss our ideas and techniques for the treatment of polyacrylamide hydrogel-injected breasts.

We present an interesting case of tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration. A 29-year-old healthy female, with no history of pulmonary disease, presented on multiple occasions to healthcare providers with wheezing and cough. She was repeatedly diagnosed and treated for asthma with acute exacerbations. Upon further evaluation, the patient was subsequently found to have a tracheobronchial foreign body causing her symptoms. This case report highlights a clinical approach to wheezing illnesses and reviews the diagnosis and management of tracheobronchial foreign body aspiration.

We report on a case of gossypiboma. A 78-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with acute abdomen. He had undergone an operation for colon cancer 4 mo previously. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an echogenic lesion with a hypoechoic rim and strong posterior acoustic shadowing in the lower abdomen. The case is reported of a World War II veteran who developed an angiosarcoma at the site of wounding 46 years previously. The wound was complicated by retained foreign material and chronic infection involving bone. The patient died, 6 weeks after tumour diagnosis, from a complication of the disease. There is slight but definite risk of tumour development in association with retained foreign material. This risk may be greater in older patients who have retained this foreign material for long periods and where the presence of the material is complicated by chronic infection.

In this prospective study, three types of tissue reaction to mycetoma grains are described. Type I reaction is characterized by the adherence of neutrophils to the surface of the grain leading to its disintegration. In Type II reaction, the fragmented grain and the dead neutrophils are cleared by macrophages and multinucleated giant cells, while in Type III reaction there is a discrete well developed epithelioid granuloma with Langhans's giant cells. The three types of reaction are usually seen in different combinations in the same lesion.

Long- and short-term reactions of reproductive tract tissue to microsurgical suture materials were compared. The five materials were: polyglactin 910 (Vicryl), polyglycolic acid (Dexon-S), polypropylene (Prolene), nylon (Ethilon and Dermalon) and chromic catgut; the calibers ranged from 6-0 to 10-0. Sixteen days after suture placement the smallest tissue reaction was seen with 9-0 and 10-0 suture materials; Dexon-S caused a slightly greater reaction than did Vicryl. The object of this study was to establish the morphological changes which occur when a polyethylene grommet is implanted in the normal tympanic membrane of experimental animals. We found a serous effusion around the grommet and in the attic during the first weeks after installation.
