Open reduction-internal fixation of a navicular body fracture with dorsal displacement of the first and second cuneiforms: a case report.

Body fractures of the tarsal navicular are relatively uncommon. To date, there is little literature discussing a navicular body fracture with dorsal subluxation of the first and second cuneiforms over the navicular. This case study presents a 30-year-old patient with this injury. He underwent open reduction internal fixation of the navicular body fracture successfully but failed adequate reduction of the navicular cuneiform joint after ligamentous reconstruction. After revisional surgery, he also failed 6 weeks of percutanous pinning with Kirschner-wire fixation. When comparing the literature

Neutrophil CD64, CD66b, and Serum Thioredoxin as Early Biomarkers of Delayed Fracture-Related Infection After Internal Fixation: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Delayed fracture-related infection (FRI) remains a major complication after internal fixation, and conventional inflammatory markers have limited diagnostic accuracy. This study evaluated neutrophil CD64, CD66b, and serum thioredoxin as adjunctive biomarkers for delayed FRI. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study at a tertiary trauma center, 637 patients undergoing internal fixation for long-bone fractures were enrolled and followed until fracture union. Venous blood was collected pre-operatively and on postoperative days 3, 7, and 10. Total leucocyte count (TLC), erythrocyte s

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Volar Displaced Salter-Harris III Mallet Fracture in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Introduction: Finger injuries are common in pediatric patients and typically heal well with conservative management. However, rare fracture patterns involving significant displacement and physeal injury, such as the one described in this case, require specialized surgical intervention to ensure proper healing and prevent long-term complications. Case Presentation: A 12-year-old left-hand-dominant female presented with pain, swelling, and deformity at the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint following hyperextension of the left fifth digit. Initial radiographs revealed a volar displaced intra-art

Clinical course of masticatory function recovery following endoscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation in patients with unilateral mandibular condyle fracture.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical course of masticatory function recovery following an endoscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (EAORIF) procedure. Patients with a unilateral mandibular condylar fracture who underwent EAORIF for therapeutic purposes were evaluated, with comparisons made between those who underwent the procedure for base or neck fractures. At each time point analyzed after treatment, the occlusal contact area and maximum bite force in patients with a base fracture were greater, although the differences between the groups were not signific

Evaluation of Results of Open Reduction and Internal Fixation (ORIF) of Fracture of Distal End of Femur with Intra-Articular Extension.

INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal femur account for 0.4% of all fractures. They involve about 7% of all femur fractures, with bimodal age distribution, commonly occur during high-velocity trauma of motor vehicle accidents in the younger group of patients and are frequently associated with other skeletal injuries. The treatment of distal femoral fractures has evolved from conservative treatment to more aggressive operative treatment. The aim is to achieve and maintain a good reduction of the joint to allow early active mobilisation, thus minimising the joint stiffness and severe muscular at

Patient function continues to improve over the first five years following tibial plateau fracture managed by open reduction and internal fixation.

AIMS: Tibial plateau fractures are serious injuries about the knee that have the potential to affect patients' long-term function. To our knowledge, this is the first study to use patient-reported outcomes (PROs) with a musculoskeletal focus to assess the long-term outcome, as compared to a short-term outcome baseline, of tibial plateau fractures treated using modern techniques. METHODS: In total, 102 patients who sustained a displaced tibial plateau fracture and underwent operative repair by one of three orthopaedic traumatologists at a large, academic medical centre and had a minimum of fiv

Patient and Surgeon Factors Associated With Prosthetic Replacement Rather Than With Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Radial Head Fracture.

Background: The decision between radial head arthroplasty and open reduction internal fixation in the context of a terrible triad elbow fracture-dislocation is debated. This study investigated both surgeon and patient factors associated with surgeons' recommendations to use arthroplasty. Methods: One hundred fifty-two surgeon members of the Science of Variation Group participated. Surgeons were asked to complete an online survey that included surgeon demographics and 16 patient scenarios. The patient scenarios were randomized using 2 patient variables and 2 anatomical variables. Multilevel log

Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Plus Total Hip Arthroplasty for the Acute Treatment of Older Patients with Acetabular Fracture: Surgical Techniques.

Open reduction and internal fixation of displaced acetabular fractures has been the gold standard for treatment of these complex injuries. The subset of older patients with dome impaction, femoral head impaction, or a posterior wall component are considered for treatment with concomitant open reduction and internal fixation and total hip arthroplasty. Little has been written on the surgical techniques to perform concomitant open reduction and internal fixation plus total hip arthroplasty safely. This article describes the important intrinsic factors for acetabular component stability, choice o

Distal radial fracture arthroscopic intraarticular gap and step-off measurement after open reduction and internal fixation with a volar locked plate.

PURPOSE: A persistent articular gap and a step-off of ≥1 mm after a distal radial fracture (DRF) may lead to post-traumatic arthritis of the radiocarpal joint. This study aims to arthroscopically assess the reduction in the articular surface in patients requiring volar locked-plate fixation for DRF via fluoroscopy-guided open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). METHODS: Seventy consecutive patients with DRF were prospectively enrolled. Posteroanterior and lateral radiographs and axial, coronal, and sagittal computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained before ORIF for DRF. The widest artic

Femoral neck fracture in a child with autosomal-dominant osteopetrosis: failure of spica cast treatment and successful outcome by internal fixation.

A case report of a 6-year-old child with autosomal dominant osteopetrosis who sustained a closed femoral neck fracture initially treated with a spica cast with subsequent fracture displacement is presented. Further treatment included closed reduction and operative fixation, first, with a guide pin placement for a cannulated screw insertion that was abandoned because of the hardness of the bone. Three Kirschner wires were then inserted to maintain the closed reduction, followed by immobilization in a spica cast. At the 2-year follow-up, the child was completely free of any complications resulti
