The radial head fracture associated with dislocation in the distal end of the ulna and tear of interosseous membrane of the forearm with a subsequent proximal migration of the radial shaft is a relatively rare injury. For the first time it was described by Essex-Lopresti in 1951. Our report presents one case together with an analysis of available literature relating to the diagnosis and treatment. A man, 69 years old, hurt his right elbow and forearm in a fall on the outstretched arm. There was a 2 x 1 cm excoriation on the lateral portion of the elbow and a dominating pain and limitation of t

There are several options for plate fixation of distal radius fractures. Volar plating has broad applicability and consistent outcomes, and thus is the most commonly used plate type. Dorsal plates are advantageous for specific fracture patterns, and can provide direct fracture reduction and buttressing, but may be prominent and can cause tendon irritation. Bridge plates offer an alternative to external fixation while avoiding the complications with prominent hardware, because they span highly comminuted fractures and can be used for immediate weight bearing; however, they require plate removal

Introduction Distal femur fractures are common but challenging as they are usually displaced and comminuted. They are prone to functional impairment of the knee joint because of injury to the quadriceps system. Such fracture often occurs in elderly patients with osteoporosis. Various treatment methods, such as closed traction, application of a cast brace following preliminary traction, and open reduction with internal fixation using various implants, are suggested. We evaluated the surgical and functional results of distal femur fractures treated with anatomical distal femur locking compressio

Frontal sinus fractures are relatively rare maxillofacial injuries (only 5-15% of all facial fractures). The appropriate management of frontal sinus fracture and associated pathology is controversial. Diagnosis and treatment of frontal sinus fractures has improved with the advances of high-resolution computed tomography technology. Treatment of frontal sinus fractures depends on several factors, including contour deformity of anterior table; the presence of CSF leak or air-fluid level in the sinus, likelihood of nasofrontal duct obstruction, and degree of displacement of posterior table. Nasof

Related to fractures of and around the knee, inappropriate technical factors related to the surgery, severe comminution of the fracture, early overly arduous rehabilitation of the patient, and patient-related noncompliances may have the potential for the risk of inadequate fixation and other complications. Loss of fixation, malunion/nonunion, infection, arthritis, arthrofibrosis, and symptomatic hardware are among postsurgical complications that may necessitate further reconstructive techniques. In this review, complications that may be encountered in the postsurgical period of fractures invol

A 15-year-old boy sustained an ipsilateral scaphoid and radius fracture, a combination of injuries that has only received brief mention in previous reports. Closed reduction and cast immobilization produced a satisfactory result. The distal radius injury was a comminuted fracture with a vertical component that extended to the physis without involvement of the epiphysis. The mechanism of injury may have been a severe impact delivered to the base of the hand with the wrist fixed in dorsiflexion, a force that would make a distal radial epiphyseal fracture unlikely.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical utility of nonenhanced CT (NECT)-based screening criteria and CTA in detection of blunt vertebral artery injury (BVAI) in trauma patients with C1 and/or C2 fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of all blunt trauma patients with C1 and/or C2 fractures between 8/2006 and 9/2011. Cervical CTA was prompted by cervical fractures involving/adjacent to a transverse foramen, and/or subluxation on NECT. Two neuroradiologists independently reviewed the CTA studies, and graded the BVAI.
RESULTS: 210 patients were included; of these, 124

PURPOSE: The location of the zygomatic bone plays an important role in facial symmetry and esthetics. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the frequency of facial asymmetry in a sample of patients who had undergone treatment of unilateral zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures (study group) and a sample of patients without ZMC fracture (control group).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective controlled cross-sectional study. The primary predictor variable was the type of ZMC fracture (linear or comminuted). The primary outcome variable was facial asymmetry character

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES: To study the predictive value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of thoracolumbar spine fractures concerning the radiologic and clinical outcome.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Disagreement about the proper treatment of thoracolumbar spine fractures is caused by insufficiency of conventional imaging techniques. Previous studies have shown that MRI is capable of distinguishing injury to all structures of the fractured spine and thus may help develop schemes with higher predictive power.
METHODS: A total of 53 patients with 71 fractur

This is a study of 15 fractures of the mandible in children. We were able to make the following conclusions: --the usual causes of these fractures are road traffic accidents or accidents at play, --the fracture is usually single (7 cases) multiple (8 cases) and in 13 children out of 15 there was a fracture of the condyle. --the presence of the first dentition and dental germs posed special problems. The treatment is mainly orthopedic, and the fracture is maintained in place by metallic arches which may or may not be completed with a resin dropper. Condyle fractures are treated classically by f

Various classifications of scaphoid fractures have been based on plain radiography, but there are difficulties in defining the actual fracture line without an appreciation of the three-dimensional anatomy. Radiological fracture lines were therefore mapped on transparent methylmethacrylate models of the bone. An analysis of 91 acute fractures showed that 11 were apparently incomplete. The other 80 showed three basic anatomical patterns: transverse through the waist, oblique in the plane of the dorsal sulcus, or of the proximal pole. There was some variation and comminution in these patterns, bu

A case of traumatic spino-pelvic dissociation is reported. The unusual fracture pattern (grade III-B open left sacroiliac joint fracture dislocation, Denis type I longitudinal right sacral fracture, transverse sacral fracture at the S3-4 level, and a left comminuted pelvic wing fracture) led to a complete dislocation of the spine from the pelvis, transection of the left S1 and S2 nerve roots, and intrusion of the cranial portion of the spine into the pelvis. The patient underwent open reduction internal fixation of the spine and the pelvis in combination with general surgical management. Two y

Ninety-five subtrochanteric femoral fractures were treated with an interlocking nail. There were 69 closed and 26 open fractures. This injury was the result of high-energy trauma in 77% of the cases. The average time to healing was 25 weeks. There were three delayed unions, one nonunion, and six malunions. Essentially all nonpathologic, subtrochanteric femur fractures can be stabilized by interlocking nailing, regardless of the fracture pattern or degree of comminution. Favorable mechanical characteristics of interlocking nails have eliminated the requirement of surgically reconstituting the m

BACKGROUD: Internal fixation has been established as a treatment of choice in relatively young patients with femoral neck fractures. Due to the characteristics of femoral neck anatomy and blood supply, complications such as malunion, nonunion, avascular necrosis, and femoral neck shortening can occur after internal fixation of femoral neck fractures. Unlike other complications such as avascular necrosis or nonunion, femoral neck shortening has not been relatively well studied. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors and clinical outcomes of femoral neck shortening after internal fixat
