Safety and efficacy of topical bacteriophage and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid treatment of Staphylococcus aureus infection in a sheep model of sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of sinonasal bacterial biofilms continues to be a challenge in modern rhinology. This study's objective was to assess the safety and efficacy of topically applied Cocktail of S. aureus specific phage (CTSA) alone and in combination with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) for treatment of Staphylococcus aureus biofilms in vivo. METHODS: Using a sheep model of sinusitis, frontal sinuses (n = 6 per treatment) were flushed once daily with a CTSA (2 × 10(6) plaque forming units [PFU]/mL), with or without EDTA (0.075 mg/mL), and compared to a control flush containing salin

Anatomic risk factors for sinus disease: fact or fiction?

BACKGROUND: Sinonasal anatomic variants have been postulated as a risk factor for sinus disease. Therefore, a study was conducted to examine the correlation of sinus disease to septal deviation, concha bullosa, and infraorbital ethmoid cells. METHODS: Two hundred fifty consecutive sinus and orbital computed tomography scans were examined at the University of Virginia over a 2-year period. Coronal, sagittal, and axial views were examined for the presence and size of concha bullosa and infraorbital ethmoid cells. Septal deviations were measured by examining the width of the nasal cavity at the

Simultaneous treatment of intracranial complications of paranasal sinusitis.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to analyse 51 patients with intracranial complications of sinusitis treated in the Department of Otolaryngology and Laryngeal Oncology at Poznań University of Medical Sciences from 1964 to 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Males made up a significant portion of study participants at 70.5%. Treatment included simultaneous removal of inflammatory focal points in the paranasal sinuses and drainage of cerebral and epidural abscesses and subdural empyemas under the control of neuronavigation preceded by the implementation of broad-spectrum antibiotics continuous

Computed tomography evaluation of paranasal sinuses in asthma: is there a tendency of particular site involvement?

Although the precise mechanism is unclear, asthma and chronic sinusitis are associated frequently. Computed tomography (CT) is a sensitive modality for documenting sinonasal mucosal abnormalities. The aim of this study was to evaluate paranasal mucosal abnormalities in asthma and whether there was a relationship with asthma severity. One hundred fifty-five patients with asthma and 36 normal control subjects were assessed with coronal sinus CT. Asthma was classified as mild, moderate, or severe. Scoring of paranasal sinus abnormalities were assessed for total sinus, total mucosal, and individua

Subdural Abscess Suspected to Have Developed From Acute Sinusitis via the Foramen Cecum: A Case Report.

The foramen cecum connects the intracranial space to the sinus cavities. However, it is usually blind-ended and typically closed by surrounding bone and tissue. The opening of this anatomical structure can provide a pathway for intracranial infection from acute sinusitis. However, no previous reports have documented the spread of acute sinusitis intracranially via the foramen cecum, to the best of our knowledge. In this case report, we report a case of subdural abscess that was thought to have developed from acute frontal sinusitis through the foramen cecum and provide a review of relevant lit…

Metarrhizium anisopliae as a cause of sinusitis in immunocompetent hosts.

Metarrhizium anisopliae is a common pathogen of insects and has even been used to control insect populations. It is rarely isolated from human or animal sources, but recently, there have been three reported cases of disease, two in humans and one in a cat. We present our experience with five isolates from human sources, including two that were the apparent causes of two cases of sinusitis in immunocompetent hosts. The first patient was a 36-year-old male with frontal and ethmoid sinusitis, and the second was a 79-year-old female with chronic sinusitis. Both patients underwent surgery, and path
