Electrospun zein nanofibres incorporating NADES-phytochemical systems as sustainable antimicrobial wound dressings.

Bioactive wound dressings with antibacterial properties are attractive for infection control. Phytochemicals, products from plant secondary metabolism, like gallic acid (GA), ferulic acid (FA), coumaric acid (CouA) and perillyl alcohol (PA) show promising antimicrobial activity, but their poor water solubility and the high concentrations required for efficacy limit their application. To overcome this, Natural Deep Eutectic Solvents (NADES) provide a sustainable and biocompatible alternative to conventional solvents. NADES were used at sub-minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBC) to enhance ph…

Therapeutic Potential of Plant Phenolic Acids in the Treatment of Cancer.

Globally, cancer is the second leading cause of death. Different conventional approaches to treat cancer include chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, these are usually associated with various deleterious effects and numerous disadvantages in clinical practice. In addition, there are increasing concerns about drug resistance. In the continuous search for safer and more effective treatments, plant-derived natural compounds are of major interest. Plant phenolics are secondary metabolites that have gained importance as potential anti-cancer compounds. Phenolics display a great prospective as cyt

Subcritical Water Extract from Grape Pomace Protects Human Bronchial Epithelium Cells by Mitigating Oxidative Stress Through Nrf2 Pathway.

In the context of the circular economy, the valorization of natural biomolecules from by-products has recently represented a major goal in health promotion. From this perspective, this study examined the antioxidant potential of Sicilian white grape pomace from the Pinot Gris variety, using subcritical water extraction as an eco-friendly and innovative method to recover bioactive compounds. Different extraction parameters allowed for comparing the potential of various fractions. Among these, the Subcritical Water Extract obtained after 5 min at 160 °C (SWE160.1) was rich in gallic acid and pro…
