BACKGROUND: Hyalomma asiaticum, which acts as a vector of zoonotic pathogens, relies on its innate immune system for defense.
METHODS: Unfed adult female H. asiaticum ticks were injected with Escherichia coli (Gram-negative) or Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive), with PBS-injected ticks as controls. After 24 h, RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed to compare transcriptomic profiles. Differential expression analysis, KEGG pathway enrichment, and phylogenetic characterization of defensin genes were conducted. RT-qPCR was used to validate selected defensin expression levels.

The frequencies of HLA-A, -B, -C, DR and MT lymphocyte alloantigens in clinical and serologic subsets of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) were determined in 65 Caucasian patients with definite or classical disease and compared to frequencies observed in normal individuals. The elevation in frequency of several antigens controlled by different genes in the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) suggested that combinations of antigens may be associated with RA. Oncogenes capable of transforming 3T3-Vill cells were not detected in 'normal' Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) fibroblasts but were detected in two out of six XP epitheliomas. Preliminary results concerning the transfection of 'normal' XP fibroblasts with activated ras genes seem to indicate that these cells are as resistant as the healthy controls to the transforming action of the group II oncogenes. However, after transfection with v-myb oncogene in XP fibroblasts several cellular clones have been isolated showing some new phenotypic characteristics.

Constitutive expression of the cellular proto-oncogenes c-fos and c-jun, and in a lesser extent ras, was demonstrated in the glioma cell line C-6 by flow cytometry analysis using specific mono and polyclonal antibodies. Basal expression of the products of the early response genes c-fos and c-jun were increased 66 and 50% when Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus (TMEV) infected these cells. No increase in ras transcription could be demonstrated after infection. This activation follows a kinetic reaching maximum values after 60 min and was proportional to the multiplicity of infection used.
