Methyl mercury, a toxic compound, is produced by anaerobic microbes and magnifies in aquatic food webs, affecting the health of animals and humans. The exploration of mercury methylators based on genomes is still limited, especially in the context of river ecosystems. To address this knowledge gap, we developed a genome catalogue of potential mercury-methylating microorganisms. This was based on the presence of hgcAB from the sediments of a river affected by two run-of-river hydroelectric dams, logging activities and a wildfire. Through the use of genome-resolved metagenomics, we discovered a

Anthropogenic activities have been releasing mercury for centuries, and despite global efforts to control emissions, concentrations in environmental media remain high. Coastal sediments can be a long-term repository for mercury, but also a secondary source, and competing processes in marine ecosystems can lead to the conversion of mercury into the toxic and bioaccumulative species methylmercury, which threatens ecosystem and human health. We investigate the fate and transport of three mercury species in a coastal lagoon affected by historical pollution using a novel high-resolution finite elem

Differences in sediment biogeochemistry among tidal marsh features with different hydrological and geomorphological characteristics, including marsh interiors, marsh edges, first-order channels, and third-order channels, can result in spatial variation in MeHg production and availability. To better understand the link between MeHg production in sediments and bioaccumulation in primary and secondary consumer invertebrates and fish, we characterized mesoscale spatial variation in sediment biogeochemistry and MeHg concentrations of sediments, water, and consumer tissues among marsh features. This study was the first to investigate the pollution and ecological risks of heavy metals in coastal, river/stream and road-deposited sediments (RDS) from Apia in Samoa. Cr and Ni concentrations in sediment samples were higher than those of other metals. River sediments and RDS had relatively high EF values around the intensive commercial areas, with a moderate to significant enrichment of Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb. The results indicate that Cr and Ni have a natural origin from volcanic parent materials, while Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb originated from anthropogenic activities, such as traffic emissions and

In this study, the sources of nine heavy metals (Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, and Co) in the sediments of the Bohai Sea were quantitatively identified through a positive factor matrix to provide better advice for marine and coastal management. In Bohai Sea sediments, most metals fell below detectable contamination levels, including As, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Zn, and Co. Unfortunately, Bohai Sea sediments were moderately to significantly enrich with Cd and Hg, posing potentially adverse ecological risks to aquatic ecosystems. Our modeled results showed three factors representing natural, anthropoge

Pharmaceutical residues in river surficial sediment are prone to anthropogenic impacts and environmental factors in watershed, but the mechanisms remain unclear. This study attempted to reveal surficial sediment-water pseudo-partitioning and anthropogenic (land use) patterns of pharmaceutical residues in surficial sediment among 23 subwatersheds of Jiulong River, southeast China with a gradient of urban land use percentile in dry and wet seasons. Thirty-eight out of target 86 compounds from six-category pharmaceuticals were quantified and ranged from below the quantification limits (0.001 mg k

Heavy metals are toxic, persistent, and non-degradable. After sedimentation and adsorption, they accumulate in water sediments. The aim of this study was to assess the extent of heavy metal pollution of Qinjiang River sediments and its effects on the ecological environment and apportioning sources. The mean total concentrations of Mn, Zn, Cr, Cu, and Pb are 3.14, 2.33, 1.39, 5.79, and 1.33 times higher than the background values, respectively. Co, Ni, and Cd concentrations are lower than the background values. Fe, Co, Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Pb are all primarily in the residual state, while Mn and

This study investigated seasonal trends in bioaccumulation potential and toxic effects of mercury (Hg) in Asian clams (Corbicula fluminea) and microbial community. For this, a clam-exposure experiment was performed during summer, fall, and winter seasons in four different sites (HS1: control/clean site; HS2, HS3, and HS4: contaminated sites) of Hyeongsan River estuary, South Korea. Total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in whole sediments were highest at HS4 site during fall, sustained similar levels during winter, but decreased during summer. Unlike whole sediment, pore water reported h

Wetlands are of a considerable environmental value as they provide food and habitat for plants and animals. Several important chemical transformations take place in wetland media, including the conversion of inorganic mercury (Hg) to monomethylmercury (MeHg), a toxic compound with a strong tendency for bioconcentration. Considering the fact that wetlands are hotspots for Hg methylation, we investigated, for the first time, Hg methylation and demethylation rates in an old growth cypress wetland at Sky Lake in the Mississippi Delta. The Sky Lake ecosystem undergoes large-scale water level fluctu

We analyzed total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), and heavy metals in 58 sediment samples from the Laoshan Bay, China. TOC and TN results identified marine primary production as the dominant source for organic matter, and the weak correlations between TOC, TN, and heavy metals indicated the terrestrial origin of heavy metals. Cd showed insignificant correlations with other metals, which suggests that agriculture production is the main anthropogenic activity affecting the distribution of Cd. Pb contamination in past 50 years was likely to have occurred because of fossil fuel combusti

Surficial sediment quality in the Ojo de Liebre Lagoon (OLL), Mexico, was evaluated via five geochemical indices. Results indicate that concentrations of the elements Ag, As, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Sb, U, V and Zn do not exert adverse biological effects in this ecosystem. However, minor enrichment was observed for Ba (mean ± SD: 1.09 ± 0.17) and Co (1.57 ± 0.22) and was moderately severe for Cd (9.3 ± 2.0), possibly due to natural processes. The adverse effect index was >1 only for Hg, suggesting that concentrations of this element are sufficiently high (0.40 to 1.13 nmol g-1) to potentially elic

The presence of coal-based power plants and coal mine in the Waterberg area subjects the Mokolo River to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) such as mercury (Hg). Mercury is an extremely toxic element. Thus, monitoring and chemical speciation of Hg in water bodies; particularly in sediments is a vital tool for assessing water quality. The objective of this study was to investigate the levels of Hg(II) and methyl Hg (MeHg(I)) in sediment samples collected from Mokolo River in different seasons, as well as examining factors such as pH, temperature and organic matter content, which could affect Hg

This study aims to investigate spatial distribution, contamination and origin of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Co and Cr) in surface sediments of Jangsong tidal flat (JTF), Kangryong river estuary, DPR Korea, where has been affected by various mining activities. The spatial diverse of heavy metals are due to differences in their sources and sediment properties. Enrichment factor, geoaccumulation index and ecological risk indexes indicate that JTF is not polluted and has low ecological risk, although slight enrichments occur for some metals. Multivariate analyses revealed that Mn, Ni and Cr ori

Metal pollution poses a major threat to aquatic systems especially in anthropogenic influenced areas, in as much as metals are persistent in the environment. The freshwater snail Theodoxus fluviatilis has often been used as an indicator species for the ecological status in river monitoring. In the River Rhine, the native Northern-European form of T. fluviatilis is nowadays extinct, whilst the Danubian form is spreading along the river. The aim of our study was to investigate if the cryptic invader is affected by metal exposure present in the River Rhine and to discuss its potential as an indic

Algal blooms have thrived on the third-largest shallow lake in China, Taihu over the past decade. Due to the recycling of nutrients such as nitrate and ammonium, this problem has been difficult to eradicate. Sediment flux, a product of diagenesis, explains the recycling of nutrients. The objective was to simulate the seasonal spatial variations of nitrate and ammonium flux. In this paper, sediment diagenesis modeling was applied to Taihu with Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC). Latin hypercube sampling was used to create an input file from twelve (12) nitrogen related parameters of sedim

Mercury (Hg) transformations in sediments are key factors in the Hg exposure pathway for wildlife and humans yet are poorly characterized in Arctic lakes. As the Arctic is rapidly warming, it is important to understand how the rates of Hg methylation and demethylation (wich determine Hg bioavailability) change with temperature in lake sediments. Methylation and demethylation potentials were determined for littoral sediments (2.5 m water depth) in two deep and two shallow lakes in the Canadian Arctic using Hg stable isotope tracers at incubation temperatures of 4, 8, or 16 °C for 24 h. Compared

Trace metal contamination is among the major concerns of stakeholders due to its potential adverse effects on biota and humans, even at low concentrations. Few studies have recently focused on the ability of organisms to depurate trace metals from different tissues. Therefore, we carried out this study to evaluate the bioconcentration of trace metals (Cd, Zn, Pb, Ni, Mn, Fe, Cr, Cu) and the depuration process of these pollutants in two tissues (soft tissue and carapace) in an estuarine benthic crab model, Neohelice granulata. The results indicate that Cu and Zn were the highest bioconcentrated

Ooty lake, in the southern part of India, has raised huge concern about the role of metals in a lake due to increasing anthropogenic activities. Present study is aimed at understanding fate of trace metals in a lake's sediment. Sixteen sediment samples collected from bottom of the lake at various locations during March 2017 were analysed for trace metals cobalt, chromium, copper, iron, lead, manganese, nickel and zinc. Fe and Mn dominate total metal concentration followed by Ni and Cr. A high concentration of Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in residual fraction indicates weathering as the source for these m

In this study we take a closer look at the diseases that afflicted Japanese police officers who were stationed in a remote mountainous region of Taiwan from 1921 to 1944. Samples were taken from the latrine at the Huabanuo police outpost, and analyzed for the eggs of intestinal parasites, using microscopy and ELISA. The eggs of Eurytrema sp., (possibly E. pancreaticum), whipworm and roundworm were shown to be present. True infection with Eurytrema would indicate that the policemen ate uncooked grasshoppers and crickets infected with the parasite. However, false parasitism might also occur if t
