This cross-sectional, multivariate study investigated associations between sleep disordered breathing (SDB) and putative risk factors in a heterogeneous group of 720 individuals over the age of 50 years studied during all-night in-lab polysomnography. The clinical presentation of incontinence was compared to diagnoses based on urological and urodynamic evaluation in 135 elderly women assessed consecutively in an outpatient clinic. Most patients (64 per cent) presented with mixed symptoms: 16 per cent presented with pure stress and 16 per cent with pure urge incontinence. Eight percent of the elderly patients discharged from a geriatric unit in one year were readmitted within three months. Forty-six percent had been living alone and nearly all of these had received full community support at the time of discharge. A double-blind study was undertaken to determine the relationship (if one exits) between the extent of postural sway in standing of individual elderly subjects and their frequency of falling. Biliary-tract disease is not only more common in the geriatric population but carries an increased surgical risk. Described is a series of 10 middle-aged and elderly patients who had stones in the common bile duct associated with significant underlying medical illness or peri-ampullary pathologic changes. They were successfully treated by endoscopic papillotomy. The 80 percent success rate in such critically ill patients suggests that endoscopic papillotomy might be used as the initial treatment modality in aging patients with amenable biliary-tract disease.
