[Off-label use of antibiotics in equine medicine - an online survey in Germany].

Since 28.01.2022, veterinary medicinal products must be used in accordance with the conditions of authorization (Regulation (EU) 2019/6, Article 106). This entails further restrictions on therapeutic freedom, e. g., with regard to dose deviations. To date, there is no data available in equine medicine on the scope of off-label use as any use deviating from the expert information for antibiotics, on the basis of which the feasibility of implementing the new regulations in Germany can be assessed. To collect data on the off-label use of antibiotics, a Germany-wide anonymous online survey was ther…

The impact of the SARS-CoV2 pandemic on the mental health of scoliosis patients in Germany.

PURPOSES: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has adversely affected the mental health of children and adolescents due to widespread non-pharmaceutical measures. Studies have mainly focused on healthy adolescents. However, children and adolescents with chronic illnesses were also affected by the restrictions. Furthermore, very limited knowledge exists about their mental health during and after the pandemic. The aim of this study was to analyse changes in the mental well-being of children and adolescents with scoliosis in Germany before, during, and after the pandemic, and to identify associated influencin…

Evaluation of emergency medical responses to nursing homes in a local area of Germany.

BACKGROUND: In rural areas with low population density, emergency medical services (EMS) are often the first source of acute medical care in nursing homes (NHs) when nursing staff are unable to manage the situation, and no specialist practitioner is immediately available. This study analysed EMS responses to NHs in a German region to evaluate their frequency, causes, and outcomes. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analysed EMS responses to NHs in a German region from July 2020 to December 2024. Prehospital patient care was assessed using the ABCDE approach, with additional analysis of feedba

Modelling the impact of climate and the environment on the spatiotemporal dynamics of Lyme borreliosis in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a predominant vector-borne disease in Europe, with Germany reporting endemic circulation for at least the past two decades. Climatic and environmental conditions are key drivers of tick activity, and human exposure to tick bites. Understanding the climatic and environmental factors driving LB dynamics can help devise decision-support tools to guide interventions and adaptation strategies. METHODS: Using a Bayesian modelling framework, we assessed the delayed and nonlinear associations between climate variation and land use change and monthly LB case counts…

Investigation of an airport-associated cluster of falciparum malaria in Frankfurt, Germany, 2022.

Airport malaria is uncommon but increasing in Europe and often difficult to diagnose. We describe the clinical, epidemiological and environmental investigations of a cluster of airport malaria cases and measures taken in response. Three Frankfurt International Airport employees without travel histories to malaria-endemic areas were diagnosed with Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Germany in 2022. Two cases were diagnosed within 1 week, and the third one after 10 weeks. Two cases had severe disease, all three recovered fully. The cases worked in separate areas and no specific location for the tr…

Knowledge about age-related eye diseases in the general population in Germany.

BACKGROUND: With a rising prevalence of age-related eye diseases, prevention and early diagnosis of these conditions are key goals of public eye health. Disease-related knowledge in the general public supports these goals but there is little data available. Thus, we have assessed knowledge of cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease in the German adult general population in a cross-sectional study and identified target groups for health education interventions. METHODS: Knowledge assessment content was identified based on a literature review, expert

Predictors of changes in marijuana consumption in Germany during the covid-19 pandemic.

During the Covid-19 pandemic Germany experienced its first increase in the proportion of heavy cannabis users since 1995. With the expected nationwide decriminalization of cannabis before 2025, we investigate the potential causes for that increase. Data were from the 2021 European Web Survey on Drugs (EWSD) including 762 12-month marijuana users from Germany (72.9% male, mean age = 29.5 years). Both heavy and regular cannabis consumers reported an increase in marijuana consumption during the pandemic, with infrequent users reporting a decrease. Using multinomial logistic regression, we found y…

Patch testing in occupational dermatology: Practical aspects in relation to the conditions in Germany.

Allergic contact dermatitis is one of the most frequent occupational skin diseases. Targeted allergen avoidance can only be achieved by identification of the causative allergen. Therefore, patch testing is of utmost importance in occupational dermatology, not only in terms of assessing causal relationships but also regarding the implementation of prevention measures and evaluation of the legal criteria for an occupational skin disease in Germany (statutory occupational disease BK 5101). The lack of commercial patch test preparations poses a great diagnostic challenge. Patch testing of patient'…
