Synthesis, Crystal Structures, Lipophilic Properties and Antimicrobial Activity of 5-Pyridylmethylidene-3-rhodanine-carboxyalkyl Acids Derivatives.

The constant increase in the resistance of pathogenic bacteria to the commonly used drugs so far makes it necessary to search for new substances with antibacterial activity. Taking up this challenge, we obtained a series of rhodanine-3-carboxyalkyl acid derivatives containing 2- or 3- or 4-pyridinyl moiety at the C-5 position. These compounds were tested for their antibacterial and antifungal activities. They showed activity against Gram-positive bacteria while they were inactive against Gram-negative bacteria and yeast. In order to explain the relationship between the activity of the compound…

Microbiological patterns in sepsis: what happened in the last 20 years?

Changes in the microbiological characteristics of sepsis have been observed over the past few decades. Infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria and fungi have become more common in some areas, possibly as a consequence of the increased use of intravascular and other medical devices, an increase in invasive procedures and the use of immunosuppressant agents. As observed with other infections there has been an emergence of multiresistant Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. Most of the published data come from wealthy countries in temperate climates, and although many of the same change

Preclinical pharmacology of GAR-936, a novel glycylcycline antibacterial agent.

GAR-936 is an analog of minocycline, a semisynthetic derivative of tetracycline. It has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity in vitro and in vivo. The new class of tetracyclines to which GAR-936 belongs is named the glycylcyclines. Tetracyclines act by inhibiting protein translation in bacteria, presumably by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit and blocking entry of amino-acyl transfer RNA molecules into the A site of the ribosome. This prevents incorporation of amino acid residues into elongating peptide chains. In general, tetracyclines are considered bacteriostatic and the critical therap

[Development and Evaluation of a New Selective Culture Medium, KBM Anaero RS-GNR, for Detection of Anaerobic Gram Negative Rods].

The laboratory culture methods for isolating drug-resistant pathogens has been the gold standard in medical microbiology, and play pivotal roles in the overall management of infectious diseases. Recently, several reports have emphasized the development of antibiotics-resistance among anaerobic gram-negative rods, especially Genus Bacteroides and Prevotella. Therefore, a selective culture method to detect these pathogens is needed. We developed here the new selective culture medium, termed "KBM Anaero RS-GNR," for detecting anaerobic Gram-negative rods. Growth capability and selectivity of the

Gram-Positive and Gram-Negative Probiotic Extracellular Vesicles: Mechanisms of Immune Modulation and Therapeutic Opportunities in Atopic Dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a prevalent chronic inflammatory skin disease characterized by epidermal barrier dysfunction, type 2 immune skewing, and microbiome dysbiosis. Although live probiotics can modulate the gut-skin axis, their clinical use is limited by variable efficacy and safety concerns. Probiotic extracellular vesicles (PEVs) have emerged as cell-free nanotherapeutics that retain microbial bioactivity while circumventing the risks associated with live bacteria. However, the comparative immunological roles of vesicles from Gram-positive and Gram-negative probiotics remain incompletely

Flavonoids as Potential Therapeutic Agents Against Gastrointestinal Pathogen Growth and Their Mechanisms of Action: A Comprehensive Review.

The increasing prevalence of gastrointestinal infections, along with growing resistance to conventional antibiotics, has driven the search for alternative antibacterial agents including flavonoids, which are widely recognised for their antimicrobial properties. Flavonoids exhibit broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria through multifactorial mechanisms, disrupting multiple bacterial cellular processes, including energy metabolism, membrane integrity, and protein synthesis. Several studies have highlighted the antimicrobial potential of flavon…
