Capillary haemangioma on the palate: a diagnostic conundrum.

Haemangiomas are benign tumours of blood vessel origin and are classified as capillary, cavernous or central. They appear as flat or raised reddish-blue lesions and are generally solitary, affecting women in younger age groups. The tumour may be slowly progressive, involving extensive portions of the superficial and deep blood vessels, and affect function, depending on location. They are common in the head and neck region but rarely in the oral cavity. Oral lesions generally appear on the lips, buccal mucosa and tongue, but rarely on the palate. As the lesion can be confused with pyogenic gran

Lobulated capillary haemangioma: a common lesion in an uncommon site.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a well-known localised granulation tissue overgrowth. It remains an aetiopathological enigma, with trauma, inflammatory and infectious agents being the suspected causative factors. It is a relatively common benign mucocutaneous lesion occurring intraorally or extraorally and is more common in women in the second decade of their lives than in men. Although it is a common lesion it may present with varying clinical features that sometimes may mimic more serious lesions such as malignancies. The clinical diagnosis of such lesion can be quite challenging. This case repor

Intravascular lesions of the hand.

INTRODUCTION: Intravascular lesions of the hand comprise reactive and neoplastic entities. The clinical diagnosis of such lesions is often difficult, and usually requires pathologic examination. We present the largest series to date of intravascular lesions affecting the hand. METHODS: A retrospective review of intravascular (arterial and venous) lesions involving the hand was conducted. Data regarding clinicopathologic findings were analyzed. RESULTS: We identified 10 patients with intravascular lesions of their hands including thromboemboli (n = 3), reactive intravascular conditions such a

Rhomboid glossitis in atypical location: case report and differential diagnosis.

Median rhomboid glossitis (MRG) is an uncommon benign abnormality of the tongue, most frequently affecting men. It is typically located around the midline of the dorsum of the tongue, anterior to the lingual "V", appearing as a reddish, rhomboid area, depapillated, flat maculate or mamillated and raised by 2 - 5 mm. This paper reports a case of rhomboid glossitis in a 61-year-old man who consulted for a painless raised lesion on the dorsum of the tongue, in left paramedial (not medial) location. Histopathological findings were compatible with rhomboid glossitis. Other diagnoses considered but

Bacillary angiomatosis affecting the oral cavity. Report of two cases and review.

Bacillary angiomatosis (BA) is an infectious disease characterized by proliferative vascular lesions; it mainly affects HIV-positive patients. Multiple cutaneous nodular lesions together with fever, chills, malaise, anorexia, vomiting and headache are the most important clinical manifestations. It may also involve the heart, liver, spleen, bones, lung, muscles, lymph nodes, central nervous system and other organs. Erythromycin, 500 mg four times a day, is the drug of choice. The importance of this lesion lies in its clinical and histological similarity with other diseases. Cutaneous and oral l

Skin disorders of pregnancy.

Skin disorders of pregnancy fall into three major groups: disorders due to physiologic changes, specific skin disorders of pregnancy, and skin tumors. Elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone stimulate melanogenesis, which causes hyperpigmentation, including melasma; high levels of circulating hormones also cause vascular changes and alter hair growth cycles. Specific skin disorders of pregnancy range from pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy and pruritus gravidarum, which are fairly common, to pemphigus gestationis and impetigo herpetiformis, which are rare. Common skin tu

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia demonstrating extensive skin and mucosal lesions controlled with vinblastine therapy.

Since Kimura's original description of an unusual subcutaneous disorder with distinctive histologic features of vascular and lymphoid proliferation, numerous descriptions of diseases with similar features have been reported. A variety of descriptive labels, including Kimura's disease, angiolymphoid hyperplasia (ALH) with eosinophilia, atypical pyogenic granuloma, papular angioplasia, and histiocytoid hemangioma, have been applied to these diseases. Although this information has broadened our understanding of the clinical and pathologic spectrum of ALH, the etiology and/or pathogenesis remains

Successful Management of Delayed Postoperative Hemorrhage Following Chalazion Excision Using Oral Tranexamic Acid.

A 59-year-old man presented with bilateral chalazia refractory to conservative management. Following excision, histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Seven days postoperatively, he developed spontaneous, painless bleeding from the left upper eyelid. Follow-up examination suggested a small pyogenic granuloma, which was excised, but recurrent hemorrhage persisted. Further hematologic workup was unremarkable. A short course of oral tranexamic acid was initiated, leading to complete resolution of bleeding within 24 hours. Delayed hemorrhage following chalazion excision is rare, with limited cases

Diagnostic dilemma of an isolated inguinal clinical cold abscess - ? Suppurative,? EPTB, ? NTM infection- a rare and interesting case report.

Cold abscess is an abscess without local pain and warmth and it usually accompanies Tuberculosis. The site varied depending upon the organ affected and cervical region is the commonly affected one. Cyto-morphology of cold abscess usually showed caseation type of necrosis, lymphocytes and granuloma with degenerated epithelioid cells. Here we presented an inguinal cold abscess in 9 years old girl with unique cyto-morphology of plenty of neutrophils, foam cells and lymphocytes in fine needle aspiration smear without caseation necrosis and epithelioid cells. Ulcerated bleeding palisaded encapsulated neuroma of the tongue.

INTRODUCTION: Palisaded encapsulated neuroma (PEN) is a benign lesion of Schwann cells and its occurrence in the oral mucosa especially the tongue is very rare. CASE REPORT: This article describes a case of a 41-year-old male, a chronic smoker with an actively bleeding, ulcerated, solitary, firm lesion on the lateral border of the tongue which had bled thrice before. A differential diagnosis of pyogenic granuloma, haemangioma, fibroma, nerve sheath tumour, salivary gland tumour and malignancy was made and surgically excised. Histopathology of the excised specimen revealed a well-circumscribed

Angioleiomyoma of the oral cavity: a case report and brief review of the literature.

This study presents a case of an oral angioleiomyoma along with its clinical diagnostic approach and laboratory confirmation. The differential diagnosis, especially from angioleiomyosarcoma, is also included. A 51-year-old patient presented with a tumor-like lesion on his upper labial mucosa. The clinical examination revealed a benign lesion that was surgically removed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations confirmed the diagnosis of an oral angioleiomyoma. The post-surgical period was uneventful. No recurrence had occurred after a year of follow-up surveillance. Oral angiolei

Anaplastic lymphoma kinase negative anaplastic large cell lymphoma of hard palate as first clinical manifestation of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is an uncommon disease, accounting for <5% of all cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. We report a case of 48-year-old male who presented a clinically benign swelling in the right anterior palatal region since last 2 months. Radiographic evaluation showed no bone loss in palatal area. Histological and radiological examination was in favor of a peripheral reactive lesion like pyogenic granuloma or a benign salivary gland tumor. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of anaplastic lymphoma kinase-negative (ALK(-)) ALCL. Further laboratory tests ELISA for h

Nail toxicities induced by systemic anticancer treatments.

Patients treated with systemic anticancer drugs often show changes to their nails, which are usually well tolerated and disappear on cessation of treatment. However, some nail toxicities can cause pain and functional impairment and thus substantially affect a patient's quality of life, especially if they are given taxanes or EGFR inhibitors. These nail toxicities can affect both the nail plate and bed, and might present as melanonychia, leukonychia, onycholysis, onychomadesis, Beau's lines, or onychorrhexis, as frequently noted with conventional chemotherapies. Additionally, the periungual are

Cutaneous horn arising from an area of discoid lupus erythematosus on the scalp.

A cutaneous horn is a rare clinical condition characterised by a conical projection of hyperkeratotic epidermis. Cutaneous horns most commonly arise from sun-exposed skin in elderly men, but may arise from any part of the body at any age in men and women. When a cutaneous horn forms, it is important to determine the underlying cause. Various skin diseases may present with cutaneous horns including viral warts, actinic keratosis, keratoacanthoma, seborrhoeic keratosis, pyogenic granuloma, discoid lupus erythematosus, verruca vulgaris, Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carc

Management of dermatologic toxicities related to epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor therapy across Europe: can we get a consensus?

To date, there are no phase III trial data that can guide healthcare professionals in managing toxicities of epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitors (EGFRIs). This exploratory survey assessed the similarities and differences in nursing management of EGFRI-related toxicities across 10 European countries. A questionnaire that was sent to ten nurses who specialize in the treatment of patients with EGFRI asked about the prevention and treatment of acneiform rash, dry skin/eczema, fissures, paronychia, and pyogenic granuloma. Responses from seven nurses showed that overall (with the exception o

Lapatinib-induced acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis.

Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a pustular eruption, mainly drug induced often accompanied by fever and neutrophilic leukocytosis presenting as scarlatiniform erythema over the flexures evolving into numerous tiny non follicular pustules. We present a case report of a 56-year old woman, who had undergone mastectomy, treated with lapatinib for metastatic disease, and who presented with multiple erythematous papules and plaques with peripheral pustules. She also developed painful pyogenic granuloma-like lesions over the pulp of toe and over the proximal nail folds. All the le

Low-grade gingival leiomyosarcoma in a child.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of the oral cavity, a rare mesenchymal tumor exhibiting smooth-muscle differentiation, is extremely uncommon in childhood. The most frequent location of childhood LMS is the gastrointestinal tract, particularly the stomach. The purpose of this paper is to report a case of leiomyosarcoma affecting the gingival tissues and mandible of a 9-year-old girl with peculiar clinical, microscopic, and radiographic features. Clinical and radiographical examinations revealed a gingival growth affecting the primary mandibular right first molar with inflammatory features. The lesion was

Biopsied gingival lesions in northern Jordanians: A retrospective analysis over 10 years.

The frequency and distribution of 183 consecutive cases of biopsied gingival lesions from northern Jordanians are presented here. Lesions were analyzed for age and sex of subject and location and type of lesion. Neoplasms accounted for 9% of biopsies (7% benign, 3% malignant). The most frequent neoplasm was peripheral ossifying fibroma. The maximum number of benign neoplasms occurred in patients aged 20 to 39 years, and malignant neoplasms did not occur in patients younger than 30 years. Nonneoplastic lesions accounted for 91% of cases; they comprised nine types, with pyogenic granuloma being

[Oncocytoma of the conjunctiva].

A 72-year-old woman presented with a lesion in her right eye, which had developed over 2 years. The cherry red lesion was located in the bulbar conjunctiva in the area of the plica semilunaris. Ophthalmologic examination was otherwise normal. Differential diagnosis included a pyogenic granuloma and a hemangioma. Excision of the tumor was performed. Histological examination revealed solid nests and cords of polyhedral cells exhibiting abundant, finely granular acidophilic cytoplasm and round to oval paracentral nuclei usually containing a single prominent nucleolus. The diagnosis of oncocytoma
