Preventive rehabilitative cardiology: the Mayo Clinic approach.

Coronary artery disease is a chronic condition that requires careful patient management to ensure the best possible outcome. The optimal control of the major modifiable risk factors for coronary atherosclerosis (cigarette smoking, dyslipidemia, hypertension, sedentary lifestyle) have been demonstrated to improve the cardiac event rate and cardiac mortality, to reduce the need for revascularization, and result in lower utilization of health care resources in patients with documented disease. Risk factor intervention in patients who have not yet developed atherosclerosis is also highly effective

Factors Associated with Height-Promoting Dietary Practices Among Japanese Preschool Children: A Web-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Parents of preschool children may adopt dietary practices intended to promote height growth. However, the correlates of such practices in the general population remain unclear. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study included 1362 mothers of Japanese children aged 3-5 years. Mothers were assigned to the height-related dietary practice group if they had ever used dietary practices to promote their child's height growth; all other mothers were classified into the no-practice group. The questionnaire assessed child and parental characteristics, including anthropometri

Hypertension management in primary care: study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Studies worldwide show insufficient blood pressure control rates, and effective management of hypertension remains a challenge in general practice. Although structured forms of care improved blood pressure in randomized controlled trials, little is known about their effects under routine primary care. This cluster randomized trial (CRT) evaluates the effects of a modern interactive medical education series for general practitioners on hypertension management, including practice redesign strategies. METHODS/DESIGN: For this CRT, 24 primary care academic teaching practices of the Un

Development and Validation of a Bovine Castration Model and Rubric.

Veterinary students require deliberate practice to reach competence in surgical bovine castration, but animal availability limits opportunities for practice. We sought to create and validate a surgical bovine castration model consisting of a molded silicone scrotum and testicles to allow students to practice this skill without the use of live animals. We sought to validate the model and associated scoring rubric for use in a veterinary clinical skills course. A convenience sample of third-year veterinary students (n = 19) who had never castrated a bovine were randomized into two groups. The tr

Multiculturalism and Social Justice Themes in Group Counseling Research: A Latent Dirichlet Allocation Analysis of Published Abstracts.

The importance of multicultural competence for effective group therapy practice has been widely acknowledged. Gaining an understanding of trends in the canon of group therapy scholarship and identifying gaps has implications for future research and practice. As such, the present study examined trends in the scholarly literature on multiculturalism (e.g., culture, ethnicity, identity) and social justice (e.g., redressing inequities, systemic oppression, and privilege) in group psychotherapy. Method: We conducted a PsycINFO search for peer-reviewed, scholarly journal articles with keywords relat

Imaginal flooding and exposure to real phobic situations: treatment outcome with agoraphobic patients.

Each of thirty-six female agoraphobic out-patients were treated by one of three methods: 8 sessions of imaginal flooding followed by 8 sessions of practice in the real situation; 16 sessions of combined flooding and practice; or 16 sessions of practice alone. Three therapists treated equal numbers of patients in each group, and there was some evidence that patients' response varied according to the therapist seen, irrespective of treatment group. There were no significant differences between treatment groups after 8 sessions, 16 sessions or on six-month follow-up. It is concluded that there ar

Standardized assessment of evidence supporting the adoption of mobile health solutions: A Clinical Consensus Statement of the ESC Regulatory Affairs Committee: Developed in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professions (ACNAP) of the ESC, the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC, the ESC Young Community, the ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology, the ESC Council for Cardiology Practice, the ESC Council of Cardio-Oncology, the ESC Council on Hypertension, the ESC Patient Forum, the ESC Digital Health Committee, and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC).

Mobile health (mHealth) solutions have the potential to improve self-management and clinical care. For successful integration into routine clinical practice, healthcare professionals (HCPs) need accepted criteria helping the mHealth solutions' selection, while patients require transparency to trust their use. Information about their evidence, safety and security may be hard to obtain and consensus is lacking on the level of required evidence. The new Medical Device Regulation is more stringent than its predecessor, yet its scope does not span all intended uses and several difficulties remain.

Examining the Roles of Retrieval Practice and Post-Retrieval Feedback in Learning Among Autistic Adults.

Retrieval practice enhances learning and is most effective when feedback is provided. Despite robust evidence that retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback benefit numerous clinical populations, these techniques have not been studied in autism. In two experiments, we measured retrieval practice and post-retrieval feedback effects on associative memory in autistic and non-autistic adults residing in the United States. Participants attempted to memorize semantically unrelated word pairs, which were then reviewed during a practice phase consisting of retrieval practice with and without feed

Drug-involved Mexican-origin girls' HIV prevention needs: A pilot study.

The purpose of this pilot study was to collect data to inform the development of an HIV prevention program for drug-involved Mexican-origin (MO) adolescent girls. Eighteen in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with drug-involved MO girls in addition to focus group discussions with nineteen other drug-involved MO girls and eight clinical service providers in 2009-2010. Emergent themes indicated that HIV prevention programs for drug-involved MO girls should be girl-centered, focused on relationship development, and include trained peer facilitators who share the same cultural and "s
