BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a neurodevelopmental disease associated with multiple behavioral features, including a prevalence for psychosis. The genetic causes of PWS are well characterized and involve the silencing or deletion of the paternal copy of a region of chromosome 15q11-13. One gene within this region, Snord116, a non-coding RNA, has been determined to have a determinant role in the manifestation of PWS. However, it remains unclear as to how the deletion of this allele can affect activity in the brain and influence psychosis-like behaviors.

PURPOSE: Anti-AMPAR encephalitis is a rare antibody-mediated disorder, and its clinicoradiological profile is incompletely defined. We aimed to characterize the clinical presentation and cerebral metabolic patterns of Chinese adults with anti-AMPAR encephalitis using 18F-FDG PET/CT.
METHODS: From August 2016 to August 2022, we retrospectively identified patients from two neurology centers who were positive for anti-AMPAR antibodies in serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid. Demographic data, presenting symptoms, MRI and 18F-FDG PET/CT findings (Discovery Elite, GE Healthcare), treatment regimens, a

The subdivisions of the extended cingulate cortex of the human brain are implicated in a number of high-level behaviors and affected by a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. Its anatomy, function, and response to therapeutics are often studied using non-human animals, including the mouse. However, the similarity of human and mouse frontal cortex, including cingulate areas, is still not fully understood. Some accounts emphasize resemblances between mouse cingulate cortex and human cingulate cortex while others emphasize similarities with human granular prefrontal cortex. We use comparative neu

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an effective treatment for patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), but its underlying neural mechanisms remain largely unknown. The aim of this study was to identify changes in brain connectome dynamics after ECT in MDD and to explore their associations with treatment outcome.
METHODS: We collected longitudinal resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 80 patients with MDD (50 with suicidal ideation [MDD-SI] and 30 without [MDD-NSI]) before and after ECT and 37 age- and sex-matched healthy control participants. A multil

BACKGROUND: Previous research on the changes in resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in anorexia nervosa (AN) has been limited by an insufficient sample size, which reduced the reliability of the results and made it difficult to set the whole brain as regions of interest (ROIs).
METHODS: We analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging data from 114 female AN patients and 135 healthy controls (HC) and obtained self-reported psychological scales, including eating disorder examination questionnaire 6.0. One hundred sixty-four cortical, subcortical, cerebellar, and network parcellation

The study of orofacial neuropathic pain necessitates the use of innovative assessment techniques, such as the facial expression of pain, which mirrors the internal state of the animals and could be utilized to identify the neural correlations involved. The Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC) is a crucial center in the processing of sensory and affective components of acute and neuropathic pain. However, its role in the facial response to pain remains a mystery. In this project, we set out to determine the changes in the facial response of early trigeminal neuropathic pain and the contribution of A

Cue reactivity is relevant across addictive disorders as a process relevant to maintenance, relapse, and craving. Understanding the neurobiological foundations of cue reactivity across substance and behavioral addictions has important implications for intervention development. The present study used intrinsic connectivity distribution methods to examine functional connectivity during a cue-exposure fMRI task involving gambling, cocaine and sad videos in 22 subjects with gambling disorder, 24 with cocaine use disorder, and 40 healthy comparison subjects. Intrinsic connectivity distribution impl

Ventromedial regions of the frontal lobe (vmFL) are thought to play a key role in decision-making and emotional regulation. However, aspects of this area's functional organization, including the presence of a multiple subregions, their functional and anatomical connectivity, and the cross-species homologies of these subregions with those of other species, remain poorly understood. To address this uncertainty, we employed a two-stage parcellation of the region to identify six distinct structures within the region on the basis of data-driven classification of functional connectivity patterns obt

Neuroimaging modalities such as MRI and EEG are able to record from the whole brain, but this comes at the price of either limited spatiotemporal resolution or limited sensitivity. Here, we show that functional ultrasound imaging (fUS) of the brain is able to assess local changes in cerebral blood volume during cognitive tasks, with sufficient temporal resolution to measure the directional propagation of signals. In two macaques, we observed an abrupt transient change in supplementary eye field (SEF) activity when animals were required to modify their behaviour associated with a change of sacc

BACKGROUND: Aberrant functional and structural connectivity are considered to be involved in the underlying neural mechanism of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). However, alterations in functional and structural interactions between the bilateral hemispheres are rarely examined. The current study aimed to characterized interhemispheric resting-state functional connectivity and white matter microstructural integrity of the corpus callosum in patients with GAD.
METHODS: Resting-state Blood oxygen level-dependent and diffusion tensor image were acquired for patients with GAD and healthy subjec

Psychiatric illnesses create great suffering for patients and the medical solution is sometimes limited. The experience observed after treating patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, and anorexia nervosa by Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is presented. Ten patients with medically refractory OCD, 3 patients with depression resistant to medical treatment and electroconvulsive therapy, and 5 patients with refractory anorexia nervosa have been treated. Bilateral anterior capsulotomy has been performed to treat OCD and bilateral cingulotomy has been applied to treat severe d

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with exposure to repetitive head impacts. CTE has been linked to disruptions in cognition, mood, and behavior. Unfortunately, the diagnosis of CTE can only be made post-mortem. Neuropathological evidence suggests limbic structures may provide an opportunity to characterize CTE in the living. Using 3 T magnetic resonance imaging, we compared select limbic brain regional volumes - the amygdala, hippocampus, and cingulate gyrus - between symptomatic former National Football League (NFL) players (n = 86) and controls

Depression in adolescence is frequently characterised by symptoms of irritability. Fluoxetine is the antidepressant with the most favourable benefit:risk ratio profile to treat adolescent depression, but the neural mechanisms underlying antidepressant drugs in the young brain are still poorly understood. Previous studies have characterised the neural effects of long-term fluoxetine treatment in depressed adolescents, but these are limited by concurrent mood changes and a lack of placebo control. There is also recent evidence suggesting that fluoxetine reduces the processing of anger in young h

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1 H-MRS) studies have demonstrated abnormal levels of a variety of neurometabolites in treatment-seeking individuals with moderate-severe alcohol use disorder (AUD) following acute withdrawal. In contrast, few studies have investigated neurochemical changes across early abstinence in less severe, treatment-naïve AUD. The present study, which represents the primary report of a research grant from ABMRF/The Alcohol Research Fund, measured dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) GABA, glutamate, and glutamine levels in treatment-naïve AUD (n = 23) via three

OBJECTIVES: Mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE) is the most common form of partial epilepsies. Seizures of MTLE with hippocampal sclerosis (MTLE-HS) are typically resistant to antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy. Although memory disturbances in patients with MTLE-HS are expected, verbal attention and frontal lobe functions may also be impaired. We aimed to examine the relationship between the clinical features and cognitive functions of patients by comparing cognitive test scores of patients with MTLE with few seizures (drug-responsive group) and those with frequent seizures (pharmacoresistant g

During putting in golf, the direction and velocity of the club head should be consistent across swings. In order to maintain consistency in swing timing, the cerebellum provides temporal information, motor timing, control of rhythm, and timing of movements. We utilized Interactive Metronome (IM), a brain training software program that combines the concepts of neurotechnology with the abilities of a computer, to improve an individual's rhythm and timing. We propose that IM would activate neural networks involved in decreasing variation in putt swing. Twenty professional female golfers (KLPGA) w

When differential diagnosis of dementia includes both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and the behavioural variant of frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), distribution of cerebral glucose metabolism as measured using [18F]‑2‑fluoro‑2‑deoxy‑d‑glucose positron emission tomography ([18F]FDG-PET) may be helpful. One important clue for differentiation is the presence of hypometabolism in the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), usually associated with AD. PCC hypometabolism however, could also be present in bvFTD. Therefore, the specificity of PCC hypometabolism was examined. Based on visual reading PCC hypometab

Stress and anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are characterized by disrupted safety learning. Tobacco smoking has been strongly implicated in stress and anxiety disorder symptomatology, both as a contributing factor and as a vulnerability factor. Rodent studies from our lab have recently shown that acute and chronic nicotine exposure disrupts safety learning. However, it is unknown if these effects of nicotine translate to humans. The present studies addressed this gap by administering a translational differential cued fear conditioning paradigm to both mice and hum
