BACKGROUND: Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) usually presents at birth with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) and has a high mortality rate if not promptly recognized and treated. The incidence of CDH is reported to be 0.8 - 1.0/10,000 registered births. Less than 3% present after the neonatal period. In the latter, ie. late-presenting CDH (L-pCDH), the prognosis is improved because pulmonary hypoplasia does not develop. An explanation is proposed for the conjunctival pain at the conclusion of cataract surgery. Pain associated with injection of antibiotics under the conjunctiva is sometimes observed at the end of cataract surgery performed under retrobulbar block. Partial block of the sensory nerves of the eye has been proposed as a reason for this. Failure to block orbital-ciliary nerves, branches of the maxillary branch of the fifth cranial nerve is put forward as an additional explanation for the pain.

A retrospective chart review compared data on neonates with physiologic jaundice admitted for phototherapy at a children's hospital. Those infants who received intravenous fluids (IVF) had significantly longer lengths of stay, higher initial bilirubin levels, and were more dehydrated than those babies who did not receive IVF.

We report a case of a 29-year-old man with schizoaffective disorder in which diabetes mellitus and hypertriglyceridemia developed with quetiapine (Seroquels). We reviewed the literature on the relationship between antipsychotic therapy and development of metabolic disorders and found serious concerns. This case demonstrates the importance of a careful monitoring of glucose and other metabolic parameters in patients receiving atypical antipsychotics.

This is a case of mucormycosis complicated by necrotizing fasciitis in a renal transplant recipient on immunosuppressive therapy treated with posaconazole. Mucormycosis occurs most commonly as an opportunistic infection in the immunocompromised host. This patient, with predisposing risk factors for infection, including diabetes mellitus status post cadaveric renal transplantation on immunosuppressive therapy, is the first reported case of successful treatment of Mucor involving an extremity which was neither fatal nor required extremity amputation.

In this brief review article, we suggest that the term "dental phobia" may be a misnomer. Intravenous administration of immunoglobulin is used for the treatment of many conditions, including primary immunodeficiency states, autoimmune disorders, glomerulonephritides and polyneuropathy. Biventricular pacing has been used to treat patients with symptomatic heart failure, systolic left ventricular dysfunction and intraventricular conduction delays. This modality is usually reserved for the treatment of patients with a left bundle branch block pattern on electrocardiogram. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an uncommon condition that may lead to sudden coronary artery occlusion resulting in a fatal acute myocardial infarction. It usually affects young to middle age women.
