[Genetics and family medicine].

There have been spectacular advances in genetics in the last decades. Their implications in medicine have been so relevant that the family doctor cannot ignore them. However, interestingly, our specialty training program has hardly any contents related to this discipline. For this reason, several publications have warned of the need to correct this deficit and to determine the knowledge, skills and abilities in genetics that should be acquired by family physicians. It is considered that, in addition to some general concepts, we must have training related to genetic testing, genetic counselling

Awareness, Competencies, and Practice Patterns in Tracheobronchomalacia: A Survey of Pulmonologists.

BACKGROUND: Tracheobronchomalacia (TBM) is a disorder of expiratory central airway collapse. TBM is separate from excessive dynamic airway collapse. Historically TBM has lacked a universally accepted definition. No consensus recommendations on evaluation and management exist. We suspect these unresolved issues contribute to deficits in pulmonologists' awareness and management of TBM. METHODS: We created a 20-question survey obtaining information about overall awareness, knowledge base, competencies, and practice patterns in managing TBM. The survey was disseminated via email by American Colle

Carer knowledge of dysphagia management strategies.

Dysphagia can have many negative health consequences for people with learning disabilities, including dehydration, aspiration and asphyxiation. Few studies have investigated dysphagia management among adults with learning disabilities. This study aims to contribute to the existing knowledge by investigating carer knowledge of speech and language therapists' (SLTs) recommendations regarding dysphagia management, and by comparing carer knowledge with their behavioural adherence to SLT recommendations. An exploratory study was undertaken investigating carer knowledge of dysphagia management strat

Physician beliefs, attitudes, and approaches toward Lyme disease in an endemic area.

To assess the beliefs and practice habits regarding Lyme disease among practitioners, questionnaires were sent to physicians in a seven-county Lyme-endemic region. One hundred twenty-four evaluable responses were returned from 53 family physicians, 39 pediatricians, 27 internists, and five subspecialists who diagnosed three to four cases of Lyme disease per year, on average. The majority presented with erythema migrans (EM) or other early symptoms, although arthritis was the presenting sign in 16%. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was the most frequently ordered diagnostic test, b

Impact of Health Education on Knowledge and Sexually Transmitted Infections Prevention in Young Married Women: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Young women remain disproportionately vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections, partly due to gaps in access to structure and evidence-based sexual health education. Although comprehensive sexual health education is widely advocated, evidence regarding its effectiveness in improving sexually transmitted infection prevention and sexual health knowledge among young women in low- and middle-income settings remains limited. AIM: To evaluate the impact of health education on knowledge and sexually transmitted infections prevention in young married women. METHOD: A quasi-experimen

The knowledge and attitudes of the primary care physicians on developmental dysplasia of the hip.

OBJECTIVE: For the prevention and early diagnosis of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH), a detailed clinical screening of the newborn performed by a primary care (PC) physician is recommended as a standard practice throughout the most western countries. We aimed to determine the knowledge and attitudes of the PC physicians towards DDH, and to develop further educational and training programs, according to the results obtained from the study. METHODS: The study was a pre- and post- test with a cross-sectional design. In winter of 2005, the participants included 102 PC physicians from 20

One Health Approach to Zoonotic Risks and Healthcare Barriers in Transhumant Pastoralists.

Transhumant pastoralist communities in the Kashmir Himalayas represent a marginalized and understudied population, particularly vulnerable to health risks due to their mobility and isolation. This study examines their healthcare practices, knowledge, and attitudes (KAP), with a focus on zoonotic disease exposure. Data from 384 respondents revealed that only 15% were aware of zoonotic diseases, despite 80% reporting frequent disease outbreaks. Access to health care was limited for 71% of participants, hindered by geographic isolation, poor transportation, and financial constraints. A significan

Improving Nursing Oral Care Practice for Community-Dwelling Care-Dependent Older People.

AIM: Oral care is one of the most neglected nursing practices owing to a lack of training, standard nursing oral care guidelines and low confidence and skills. There is little evidence to inform the development of oral care training and guidelines, which ideally should be done in collaboration with oral health professionals. Further, there is a lack of research, particularly in New Zealand, with nursing staff caring for care-dependent older people, including those ageing in their own homes. This pilot study aimed to determine the impact of oral care training on nursing staff knowledge, attitud

Barriers to diaphragm use: the views of advanced practice nurses.

BACKGROUND AND METHODOLOGY: Women have used the contraceptive diaphragm for decades. Although use has recently declined, the diaphragm may find a new role in STI/HIV and dual-prevention programmes when microbicides become available. We developed a questionnaire to examine seven provider issues identified as possible barriers to diaphragm use among advanced practice nurses (APNs) specialising in women's health. The perceived degree to which each issue represented a barrier was examined. Non-parametric correlations were calculated between diaphragm fitting history, demographic and practice chara

Staff Perspectives on Interventions for Confabulation in Brain Injury and Dementia.

OBJECTIVE: Providing inaccurate narratives of events (confabulation) is a commonly reported difficulty for people with brain injuries and dementia. We aimed to capture staff perceptions on the frequency and cause of confabulation, as well as interventions they find acceptable and effective. METHODS: We surveyed staff in dementia and brain injury services using convenience sampling. We developed a bespoke survey capturing staff views on confabulation prevalence, context, causes, the acceptability and effectiveness of interventions, and staff demographics such as education and experience. Exploring X: barriers to care for eosinophilic esophagitis.

Patients with chronic diseases have increasingly turned to social media to discuss symptoms and share the challenges they face with disease management. The primary aim of this study is to use naturally occurring data from X (formerly known as Twitter) to identify barriers to care faced by individuals affected by eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE). For this qualitative study, the X application programming interface with academic research access was used to search for posts that referenced EoE between 1 January 2019 and 10 August 2022. The posts were identified as being either related to barriers to
