INTRODUCTION: An elevation of cardiac troponins has been described in healthy athletes after endurance exercises. The clinical significance of this increase is unclear and the lack of awareness of this phenomenon may lead to inappropriate management of these subjects.
AIM: We sought to determine wether an intensive cycling training could determine a biomarkers elevation.
METHODS: We evaluated serum high sensitivity cardiac troponin T, NH(2)-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide, CK-MB and CK in 21 healthy male preadolescent athletes (age 9.2 ± 1.7 years) after an intensive cycling training

The hemodynamic effects of oral hydralazine were investigated in ten patients (nine in NYHA Class IV and one in Class III) with chronic refractory heart failure. With hemodynamic monitoring, adequate oral doses of hydralazine (50 or 75 mg) were determined and then administered every six hours. Hemodynamics were determined at 2-3, 6-8 and 24 hours on hydralazine therapy. Arterial pressure decreased slightly (5%) and systemic vascular resistance decreased significantly (42%). Cardiac and stroke volume index increased by 70 and 66%, respectively, without any significant change in heart rate, pulm

Electrocardiography was the first application of electronic monitoring to anesthesia care. The detection of arrhythmias remains the most important use of this technology today. Several predisposing factors tend to emerge when perioperative arrhythmias are evaluated. These are the anesthetic given, the site of surgery, abnormalities of blood gases or electrolytes, tracheal intubation, reflexes such as vagal slowing and the oculocardiac reflex, stimulation of the central nervous system, the presence of preexisting heart disease, and the use of intracardiac devices. In the evaluation of cardiac a

BACKGROUND: The maternal and neonatal risks associated with pregnancy in women with heart disease receiving comprehensive prenatal care have not been well defined.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively enrolled 562 consecutive pregnant women with heart disease and determined the outcomes of 599 pregnancies not ending in miscarriage. Pulmonary edema, arrhythmia, stroke, or cardiac death complicated 13% of pregnancies. Prior cardiac events or arrhythmia, poor functional class or cyanosis, left heart obstruction, and left ventricular systolic dysfunction independently predicted maternal cardiac

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in the advanced world, and age is an important determinant of cardiac function. The purpose of the study is to determine whether the PM2.5-induced cardiac dysfunction is age-dependent and whether the adverse effects can be restored after PM2.5 exposure withdrawal.
METHODS: Female C57BL/6 mice at different ages (4-week-old, 4-month-old, and 10-month-old) received oropharyngeal aspiration of 3 mg/kg b.w. PM2.5 every other day for 4 weeks. Then, 10-month-old and 4-week-old mice were exposed to PM2.5 for 4 weeks and withdrawal P

BACKGROUND: Fetuses with congenital heart disease are at increased risk of perinatal morbidity and mortality, which is highly influenced by their prenatal health. Placental function is vital for the health of the fetus, but increased rates of pathologic lesions of the placenta have been observed in pregnancies complicated by fetal congenital heart disease.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of both gross and histologic placental pathologies in a cohort of pregnancies complicated by fetal congenital heart disease vs healthy controls using the Amsterdam Placental Workshop G

AIM: According to epidemiological studies on newborns, the association of congenital heart defects with chromosomal anomalies varies between 4 and 12%. Prenatally this rate is probably higher, due to antenatal death occurring in fetuses with chromosomal aberrations. The aim of the study was therefore to determine the rate and the distribution of chromosomal aberrations in prenatally detected heart defects.
PATIENTS AND METHOD: Within a period of 7 years fetal echocardiography was performed on 2716 fetuses at high risk for CHD. The analysis of the fetal heart was achieved by the visualization

AIMS: Cardiac energy metabolism is perturbed in ischaemic heart failure and is characterized by a shift from mitochondrial oxidative metabolism to glycolysis. Notably, the failing heart relies more on ketones for energy than a healthy heart, an adaptive mechanism that improves the energy-starved status of the failing heart. However, whether this can be implemented therapeutically remains unknown. Therefore, our aim was to determine if increasing ketone delivery to the heart via a ketogenic diet can improve the outcomes of heart failure.
METHODS AND RESULTS: C57BL/6J male mice underwent either

With an aging workforce and longer working lives, staying in physically demanding occupations is increasingly challenging, and the factors influencing perceived exertion are still poorly understood. Also, self-rated exertion may not correlate strongly with physiological measurements of physical strain at work, such as heart rate. Our study aimed to describe the physical strain experienced by senior workers in manual occupations using Borg's Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale and to explore associations between personal variables such as heart rate during work, age, physical fitness, and

Thirty patients with oligohydramnios observed at artificial rupture of membranes were studied to determine the significance of this finding. Fifteen were subsequently found to have meconium-stained amniotic fluid and 21 had abnormal fetal heart rate tracings. This clinical observation warrants close intrapartum surveillance and preparation for delivery.

Most investigations into the negative effects of viewing stereoscopic 3D content on human health have addressed 3D visual fatigue and visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). Very few, however, have looked into changes in autonomic balance and heart rhythm, which are homeostatic factors that ought to be taken into consideration when assessing the overall impact of 3D video viewing on human health. In this study, 30 participants were randomly assigned to two groups: one group watching a 2D video, (2D-group) and the other watching a 3D video (3D-group). The subjects in the 3D-group showed signif

Stephania abyssinica is a medicinal plant used in Cameroon alternative medicine to treat arterial hypertension (AHT). Previous in vitro studies demonstrated the endothelium nitric oxide-independent vasorelaxant property of the aqueous extract from Stephania abyssinica (AESA). But its effect on AHT is unknown. The present study was undertaken to explore other vasorelaxant mechanisms and to determine the antihypertensive effects of AESA in male Wistar rats. Phytochemical analysis of AESA was carried out using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) method. The vasorelaxant effects of

Pindolol, a beta blocker with intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, was investigated in a randomised controlled trial of 100 patients presenting within 12 hours of uncomplicated acute myocardial infarction. Pindolol was given intravenously for 24 hours and orally for 48 hours to achieve serum levels above 10 ng/ml. Heart rate and arterial pressure, both systolic and diastolic, fell to a similar degree in actively treated and control patients. There was no significant difference between systolic blood pressure-heart rate product in actively treated and control patients during the first 72 hours o

Alterations in mitochondrial function contribute to diabetic cardiomyopathy. We have previously shown that heart mitochondrial proteins are hyperacetylated in OVE26 mice, a transgenic model of type 1 diabetes. However, the universality of this modification and its functional consequences are not well established. In this study, we demonstrate that Akita type 1 diabetic mice exhibit hyperacetylation. Functionally, isolated Akita heart mitochondria have significantly impaired maximal (state 3) respiration with physiological pyruvate (0.1 mm) but not with 1.0 mm pyruvate. In contrast, pyruvate de

The use of liposome-encapsulated hemoglobin (LHb), which is a cellular Hb, has been demonstrated to be beneficial in the treatment of hypohemoglobinemic shock. As a molecule of appropriate size (220 nm) that can carry oxygen, LHb may ameliorate cardiac dysfunction during lethal hemodilation. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of LHb transfusion in relieving cardiovascular dysfunction in a rat model of lethal progressive hemodilution. Over the course of 150 min, rats were subjected to blood withdrawal (0.2 mL/min) and simultaneously transfused with LHb, washed rat red blood

Hypoalbuminemia is a common condition in patients with heart failure and is mainly related to the malnutrition-inflammation complex syndrome. Other causal factors can be involved, which include hemodilution, liver dysfunction, increased transcapillary escape rate, renal and enteral loss. Evidence is growing that hypoalbuminemia independently predicts incident heart failure in patients with end-stage renal disease and elderly patients, as well as mortality in patients with heart failure regardless of left ventricular ejection fraction and clinical presentation. Hypoalbuminemia induces a low pla

Prolonged exercise induces cardiovascular drift, which is characterized by decreasing mean arterial pressure (MAP), stroke volume and heart rate increase. Cardiovascular drift has been debated for a long time. Although the exact mechanisms underlying cardiovascular drift are still unknown, two theories have been proposed. The first is that increased skin blood flow displaces blood volume from central circulation to the periphery, which reduces stroke volume. According to this theory, the rise in heart rate is presumably responding to the drop in stroke volume and MAP. The alternative theory is

The electrocardiogram is a valuable tool for evaluating the cardiac conduction system. Animal research has helped generate novel genetic and pharmacological information regarding the electrocardiogram. However, making electrocardiogram measurements in small animals in vivo, such as mice, has been challenging. To this end, we used an electrocardiogram recording method in anesthetized mice with many advantages: it is a technically simple procedure, is inexpensive, has short measuring time, and is affordable, even in young mice. Despite the limitations with using anesthesia, comparisons between c
