The presence of Helicobacter pylori in cervical preinvasive lesions.

PURPOSE: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is believed to play a role in several gynecological and obstetric pathologies since the cervical mucosa resembles the gastric environment. The microorganism is expected to infect the upper genital tract via the oral-genital and fecal-genital routes. METHODS: We studied 35 cases with benign, ASCUS, ASC-H, LSIL and HSIL pap-smear results. The presence of H. pylori in the uterine cervix and active infection were investigated with the H. pylori stool antigen test. Biopsy specimens were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and Warthin-Starry stains to find H. pyl…

Is Helicobacter pylori infection associated with alopecia areata?

BACKGROUND: Alopecia areata (AA) is an immune-mediated form of hair loss that occurs in all ethnic groups, ages, and both sexes. Helicobacter pylori has been associated with certain extra-digestive dermatological conditions, including chronic urticaria, rosacea, Schönlein-Henoch purpura, Sweet syndrome, systemic sclerosis, and atopic dermatitis. OBJECTIVE: The causal relation between alopecia areata and H. pylori is discussed. We have screened for the presence of H. pylori in patients with AA in order to determine any potential role in its pathophysiology. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We have prosp…

Helicobacter pylori infection and endocrine disorders: is there a link?

Helicobacter pylori (H pylori) infection is a leading world-wide infectious disease as it affects more than half of the world population and causes chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease and gastric malignancies. The infection elicits a chronic cellular inflammatory response in the gastric mucosa. However, the effects of this local inflammation may not be confined solely to the digestive tract but may spread to involve extra-intestinal tissues and/or organs. Indeed, H pylori infection has been epidemiologically linked to extra-digestive conditions and diseases. In this context, it has been sp…

Helicobacter equorum: prevalence and significance for horses and humans.

Helicobacter equorum colonizes the caecum, colon and rectum of horses. The agent is highly prevalent in <6-month-old foals. In adult horses, the prevalence of H. equorum seems to be rather low, but these animals may harbour low, subdetectable numbers of this microorganism in their intestines. So far, no association could be made between the presence of H. equorum and clinical disease or intestinal lesions in adult horses. Further research is necessary to elucidate the pathogenic potential of this bacterial species towards young foals. Helicobacter equorum DNA was not detected in human faeces, …

Effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on gastric carcinogenesis.

Chronic gastritis induced by Helicobacter pylori is the strongest known risk factor for gastric adenocarcinoma, yet the effects of bacterial eradication on carcinogenesis remain unclear. Animal models provide important insights into factors that are involved in gastric carcinogenesis, and we previously utilized such a model to demonstrate that an in vivo-adapted H. pylori strain, 7.13, rapidly and reproducibly induces inflammation-mediated gastric carcinoma. In the current study, we used this bacterial strain as a prototype to define the role of targeted antimicrobial therapy in gastric carcin…

Helicobacter hypothesis for idiopathic parkinsonism: before and beyond.

We challenge the concept of idiopathic parkinsonism (IP) as inevitably progressive neurodegeneration, proposing a natural history of sequential microbial insults with predisposing host response. Proof-of-principle that infection can contribute to IP was provided by case studies and a placebo-controlled efficacy study of Helicobacter eradication. "Malignant" IP appears converted to "benign", but marked deterioration accompanies failure. Similar benefit on brady/hypokinesia from eradicating "low-density" infection favors autoimmunity. Although a minority of UK probands are urea breath test posit…

dupA as a risk determinant in Helicobacter pylori infection.

The Helicobacter pylori duodenal ulcer promoting (dupA) gene has been previously described as a risk marker for duodenal ulcer (DU) development and a protective factor against gastric cancer (GC). Recent studies which have assessed the application of dupA in the prediction of clinical outcomes have been controversial. In the current study, the association of dupA with the clinical outcomes and histopathological changes following H. pylori infection was evaluated in Iranian patients. A total of 157 H. pylori-infected patients with DU (n=30), gastric ulcer (n=23), gastritis (n=68) or GC (n=36) w…

Helicobacter pylori colonization in the larynges of patients with hoarseness.

OBJECTIVES: Vocal nodules and polyps are two common noninfectious causes of hoarseness. Patients with persistent hoarseness often require microscopic laryngeal surgery to excise mass lesions of the larynx despite extensive voice resting and modification of voice use behavior. Helicobacter pylori has recently been reported to present in the upper aerodigestive tract. This study applies the rapid urease test to determine the colonization of Helicobacter pylori in surgical specimens of patients with vocal nodules and polyps. METHODS: In this prospective study, 53 consecutive patients with vocal …

The current status of Helicobacter pylori vaccines: a review.

Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative flagellate bacterium that infects the stomach of more than half of the global population, is regarded as the leading cause of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and even gastric adenocarcinoma in some individuals. Although the bacterium induces strong humoral and cellular immune responses, it can persist in the host for decades. It has several virulence factors, some of them having vaccine potential as judged by immunoproteomic analysis. A few vaccination studies involving a small number of infected or uninfected humans with various H. pylori formulat…

[Influence of Helicobacter pylori on gastroesophageal reflux disease].

Helicobacter pylori is an etiologic factor of chronic gastritis, duodenal and gastric ulcers and gastric cancer or gastric MALT lymphoma. The role of H. pylori infection in gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) pathogenesis is still controversial. The presence of H. pylori infection in gastric mucosa may play a protective or aggressive role. It appears that the influence of H. pylori infection on frequency and degree of gastroesophageal reflux depends on the localization of inflammation. More active in inducing changes in mucosa are strains producing VacA and CagA cytotoxins. It has also been…

HpaA is essential for Helicobacter pylori colonization in mice.

Infection with the human gastric pathogen Helicobacter pylori can give rise to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and gastric cancer. All H. pylori strains express the surface-localized protein HpaA, a promising candidate for a vaccine against H. pylori infection. To study the physiological importance of HpaA, a mutation of the hpaA gene was introduced into a mouse-adapted H. pylori strain. To justify that the interruption of the hpaA gene did not cause any polar effects of downstream genes or was associated with a second site mutation, the protein expression patterns of the mutant and wild-type…

Effects of Helicobacter pylori on the cadherin-catenin complex.

BACKGROUND: The cadherin-catenin complex is the key component of the adherens junction in epithelial cells, and changes in this complex are implicated in gastric adenocarcinoma. Germline mutations in E-cadherin have been described in diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma. Helicobacter pylori infection is the first stage in gastric carcinogenesis. AIMS: To determine whether H pylori was associated with changes in the complex, and whether this was affected by virulence of the strain. METHODS: Epithelial cell lines were cultured with H pylori using the wild-type pathogenic and non-pathogenic stra…

Guidelines in the medical treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Scientific evidence based on controlled clinical research confirm substantial benefits resulting from the eradication of H. pylori infection in such pathologies of the alimentary tract as: gastric peptic and duodenal ulcer (active or confirmed in the future and ulcer disease complications), MALT (Mucosa Associated Limphoid Tissue) lymphoma, atrophic gastritis, past stomach resection, gastric cancer in the family. The above group of indications is strongly recommended for eradicative treatment. During the last several years there have been many guidelines made by international and national spec

Helicobacter pylori seroprevalence in patients with mild asthma.

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is causally related to chronic active gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, primary low-grade B-cell gastric lymphoma, and is also a risk factor for gastric cancer. In addition, a high seroprevalence of H. pylori has been found in many extragastrointestinal disorders, including active bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It appears that H. pylori has a close relationship with respiratory diseases, but data in the literature on the relationship between H. pylori infection and asthma are poor. We therefore investigated the relationship betwe…
