Intestinal helminthic infections in striped field mice, Apodemus agrarius, from two southern regions of Korea.

The present study was performed to know the infection status of intestinal helminths in a most common species of field mice, Apodemus agrarius, from 2 southern regions of Korea. Total 133 and 103 mice were collected by the mouse trap in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do and Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, respectively, from July 2005 to June 2006. The small intestine of each mouse was resected and longitudinally opened with a pair of scissors. The intestinal contents were washed with 0.85% saline until the supernatant became clear. Helminths were collected with naked eyes or under a stereomicroscope fro

Gastrointestinal parasites in goats from Monte Castelo, Santa Catarina, Brazil.

This study was carried out with the aim of estimating the degree of gastrointestinal helminth infection in goats on the Northern Plateau of Santa Catarina. Twelve young females and 11 adult females were used. Every 28 days, feces samples were taken to quantify the nematode eggs per gram of feces (EPG). Larval culturing was performed on a pool of positive samples from the same group. The fecal egg counts (FECs) ranged from zero to 10,400 EPG in the young group and zero to 7,600 EPG in the adult group. The mean FECs were between 583.3 and 4441.7 in the young group and between 418.2 and 2181.8 in

Helminth communities of fish as ecological indicators of lake health.

This paper deals largely with the dynamics and changes in the helminth parasite communities of fish along the trophic gradient of lakes. The use of parasitological community data as a bioindicator of environmental health underlines the need to study parasite communities at comparable localities with known pollution levels. The comparison of the conditions in different habitats might be helpful to differentiate between normal fluctuations in ambient conditions and pollution-mediated effects. Therefore, the present study was designed to examine the community structure of parasites in snow trout

Birthweight in offspring of mothers with high prevalence of helminth and malaria infection in coastal Kenya.

Results of studies on the associations of maternal helminth infection and malaria-helminth co-infection on birth outcomes have been mixed. A group of 696 pregnant women from the Kwale district in Kenya were recruited and tested for malaria and helminth infection at delivery. Birthweight was documented for 664 infants. A total of 42.7% of the mothers were infected with Plasmodium falciparum, 30.6% with Schistosoma haematobium, 36.2% with filariasis, 31.5% with hookworm, and 5.9% with Trichuris trichiura; co-infection was present in 46.7%. Low birthweight (LBW) (weight < 2,500 grams) was present

Soil-transmitted helminth reinfection after drug treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections (i.e., Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Trichuris trichiura) affect more than a billion people. Preventive chemotherapy (i.e., repeated administration of anthelmintic drugs to at-risk populations), is the mainstay of control. This strategy, however, does not prevent reinfection. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess patterns and dynamics of STH reinfection after drug treatment. METHODOLOGY: We systematically searched PubMed, ISI Web of Science, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, China National Knowl

Advances in helminth immunology: optimism for future vaccine design?

Intestinal helminths infect approximately 2 billion people worldwide. Worm burdens correlate with disease morbidity and children generally harbor the largest numbers. The majority of intestinal helminths do not replicate within their host, and worm burdens increase through constant reinfection. Current strategies of worm control involve drug administration to school-aged children. Yet the rapid rate of reinfection and the appearance of drug resistant strains in livestock raise concerns over the sustainable nature of this strategy. A combined strategy of drug treatment for the expulsion of adul

A prospective study on parasites among expatriate workers in Al-Baha from 2009-2011, Saudi Arabia.

Al-Baha is an area with large influx of expatriate workers in Saudi Arabia. This study was carried out from October 2009 to January 2011 on expatriate workers (2000) to determine the prevalence of parasitosis. Urine and stool samples were collected and specifically examined. The results showed that 1079 (53.95%) were infected with one or up to ten parasitic species. Trichuris trichiura had the highest prevalence 190 (17.6%). Other helminthes were Ascaris lumbricoides 179 (16.58%), Ancylostoma duodenal 163 (15.10%), Hymenolepis nana 120 (11.12%), Taenia saginata 119 (11.02%), Strongyloides ster

Helminths of Sotalia guianensis (Cetacea: Delphinidae) from the south and southeastern coasts of Brazil.

From May 1997 to October 2000, 49 Sotalia guianensis (tucuxi dolphin) incidentally caught in fishing nets or stranded in São Paulo (SP) and Paraná (PR) states in Brazil were necropsied. In total, 17 lungs, 35 stomachs, and 30 intestines were analyzed. Contents were washed through a sieve (mesh, 150 mm) and examined under a stereoscopic microscope for parasites. Histopathologic analyses were performed in the lungs of five infected dolphins. The nematode Halocercus brasiliensis was found in 88% of all lungs examined, inducing moderate-to-severe pneumonia. [Posterior fossa extradural and extracranial hydatid cyst].

Hydatidosis is an endemic disease in Morocco. Cerebral echinococcosis is a relatively rare entity accounting for only 1-2% of all hydatid cysts in humans. Extradural hydatid cyst of the posterior fossa is a very uncommon site for the disease: only four cases have been reported in the literature. We report the case of a 37-year-old admitted for high intracranial pressure. Brain MRI showed an extradural and extracranial posterior fossa cyst without enhancement after contrast medium injection. Multiple hydatid cysts were removed and the histological examination of the tissue sample confirmed the

Early helminth infections are inversely related to anemia, malnutrition, and malaria and are not associated with inflammation in 6- to 23-month-old Zanzibari children.

Helminths aggravate anemia and malnutrition among school children. We studied this association in a cross-sectional study of 6- to 23-month-old Zanzibari children (N = 2322) and a sub-sample of 690 children matched on age and helminth infection status. Ascaris, hookworm, and Trichuris infections were diagnosed along with recent fever, malaria infection, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and hemoglobin concentration (Hb). Alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), C-reactive protein (CRP), height, and weight were measured in the sub-sample. Infected children had higher Hb (beta = 5.44 g/L, P < 0.001) an

[Presentation of cerebral toxocariasis with mental confusion in an adult: case report and review of the literature].

Toxocariasis is usually responsible for visceral larva migrans syndroms. Nervous system involvement is a rare complication. In this report, we describe one case of meningoencephalitis due to Toxocara canis in a 73-year-old man presenting with mental confusion. The diagnosis of cerebral toxocariasis was confirmed by immunodiagnosis in both serum and cerebro-spinal fluid. Cerebral toxocariasis may be suspected in patients presenting with some neurological patterns including: confusion, meningitis, meningo-encephalitis, meningo-myelitis, when the etiological assessment remains negative and the en

Intestinal helminths: a clue explaining the low incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases in Subsaharan Africa? Potential benefits and hazards of helminth therapy.

In their review, the authors state that the very low incidence and prevalence of IBD in sub-Saharan Africa cannot be explained by genetic factors since in Black populations of the U.S.A. and U.K., the incidence of these diseases is approaching that of the white populations. Beside helminths whose intestinal infestation is frequent in sub-Saharan Africa, other micro-organisms such as atypical mycobacteria, lactobacilli, etc, might have been reduced in Western population. This is a new variant of the Hygiene hypothesis. After Rook et al., these micro-organisms were acting as adjuvants for induct

Surgical removal of a live worm by stereotactic targeting in cerebral sparganosis. Case report.

A 64-year-old man presented with generalized tonic clonic convulsion followed by weakness of the right lower extremity. He had a medical history of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and right cerebellar infarction. Computed tomography (CT) showed a small high density nodule with an enhanced perifocal low density area in the left occipital lobe. T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed a ring-shaped and partial string-like nodule with enhancement by gadolinium. T2-weighted MR imaging showed the white matter of the left occipital lobe as high intensity. CT and MR imaging seemed to indicate

Anthelmintics: a review.

Helminths infect 25% of the world's population. In the last 50 years specific, safe and effective anthelminitic drug therapy for various parasitic infestations have been developed. The population of the developing countries across the globe suffers not only as a direct result of these infections but due also to co-morbidity such as anemia, malnutrition and reduced immunity status. Earlier anthelmintic drugs suffered from serious drawbacks such as hepatotoxicity and required specific preparation of the patient before treatment such as 12-hour fasting and pre-post purging caused considerable inc

[Organ pathology in chronic tissue-dwelling helminthic infections: role of blood and tissue eosinophilia, immunoglobulinemia E, G4, and immune response-inducing factors].

The results of earlier clinical, pathomorphological, and immunological studies of organic visceral and tissue lesions in helminthic infections [2, 3, 8, 10, 11, 14, 46] and present clinical and immunological ones [4-6, 44, 45] were analyzed and discussed in the light of a fundamental literature data review. The chronic visceral pathology in tissue-dwelling helminthic infections is associated with super- and reinfections [1, 2, 16, 36], with an inadequate immune response of humans to the invasion of zoonotic agents [2, 6, 13, 20] and with an individual invalidity of an immune response to infect

Food-borne parasitic zoonoses in the Philippines.

A number of food-borne parasitic zoonoses have been recorded in the Philippines and include echinostomiasis, artyfechinostomosis, fascioliasis, heterophydiasis, carneophallosis, clonorchiasis, paragonimiasis, taeniasis, echinococcosis/hydatidosis, diphyllobothriosis/spirometrosis and sparganosis, intestinal capillariasis, gnathostomiasis, angiostrongylosis, toxoplasmosis and sarcosporidiosis. Some are now rarely observed while others continue to be public health problems. Many are endemic in certain areas of the Philippines because of the habit of consuming raw or partly cooked fish, snails, c

Anthelmintics. Current concepts in the treatment of helminthic infections.

This article discusses the anthelmintics now in common use and describes their mode of action and toxic side effects. The drugs reviewed include: pyrantel pamoate, mebendazole, piperazine, thiabendazole, niclosamide, praziquantel, niridazole, oxamniquine and diethylcarbamazine. Most of the common roundworm intestinal infections respond to treatment with pyrantel pamoate, which has the advantage of single-dose therapy. Trichuriasis requires therapy with mebendazole, while the filariases are treated with diethylcarbamazine. There is no specific therapy for trichinellosis, but its symptoms can be
