Sexual risk behaviors among African-American and Hispanic women in five counties in the Southeastern United States: 2008-2009.

PURPOSE: We examined sexual risk behaviors and unrecognized HIV infection among heterosexually active African-American and Hispanic women. METHODS: Women not previously diagnosed with HIV infection were recruited in rural counties in North Carolina (African American) and Alabama (African American), and an urban county in southern Florida (Hispanic) using multiple methods. They completed a computer-administered questionnaire and were tested for HIV infection. RESULTS: Between October 2008 and September 2009, 1,527 women (1,013 African American and 514 Hispanic) enrolled in the study. Median a

Geographical and demographic clustering of gonorrhoea in London.

BACKGROUND: Gonorrhoea is an important cause of sexual ill health and is concentrated in geographical areas and demographic groups. This study explores the distribution of gonorrhoea across London. METHODS: Epidemiological data on all gonorrhoea cases were collected from 13 major genitourinary clinics in London between 1 June and 30 November 2004. Samples were stored centrally and typed using NG-MAST. The postcode of each case's main residence was used to calculate incidence of gonorrhoea by borough using data from the UK 2001 census and a population survey on residence of men who have sex wi

Correlates of human herpesvirus-8 seropositivity among U.S. military members recently infected with human immunodeficiency virus.

BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), the cause of Kaposi's sarcoma, is common among HIV-infected persons. The exact route of transmission of HHV-8 in various populations is still debated. GOAL: The goal was to define the correlates of HHV-8 infection among men recently infected with human immunodeficiency virus. STUDY DESIGN: Three hundred forty-two HIV-infected U.S. military men were evaluated using a questionnaire regarding potential risk factors and laboratory data, including HHV-8, herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV-2), syphilis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C serologies. RESULTS: The seropr

Human herpesvirus type 8 DNA sequences in biological samples of HIV-positive and negative individuals in Sicily.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the circulation of a new human herpesvirus (HHV), HHV-8 or Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus in a geographical area where a high incidence rate of classical KS was already present before the appearance of the AIDS epidemic. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study was carried out by analysing: (i) bioptic samples from classic, AIDS-associated KS, and controls; (ii) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from classic KS, HIV-positive subjects with and without KS and healthy HIV-negative individuals; (iii) semen samples from heterosexual HIV-positive and HIV-negative i

[Anonymous and free-of-charge centers for screening for HIV infection. Results of 30 months of activity in Public Assistance in Paris hospitals].

The results of 30 months of activity of anonymous and free-of-charge HIV detection centres in Paris hospitals are presented. During this period (April 1988 to December 1990), 15805 subjects were seen. This population accounts for about 11 percent of all French anonymous and free detection centres in 1990, and for 26 percent of the number of subjects consulting in detection centres of the same type. Risk factors could be listed in 8132 consulting subjects: 73 percent were heterosexuals and not drug-addicts; 19.5 percent were homo- or bisexuals; 6 percent were drug-addicts; 0.6 percent were both

Cervical cancer screening preferences by sexual orientation among persons assigned female at birth.

BACKGROUND: Disparities in up-to-date cervical cancer screening rates persist among women, including those identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or other sexual orientation (LGB+), highlighting the need for more inclusive and targeted screening interventions. With human papillomavirus at-home self-testing recently approved, we studied cervical cancer screening preferences by sexual orientation among persons assigned female at birth. METHODS: We examined cervical cancer screening preferences among a nationally representative sample of persons assigned female at birth aged 25-65 years in the 20

Sexual violence across gender identities and sexual orientations: a stratified, population-based, cross-sectional study among young people aged 16-29 years in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence is a critical and preventable global threat to public health, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and gender equality. Studies have shown that sexual violence among young people in Sweden is prevalent, with lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals facing greater exposure than their heterosexual peers do. Research has also indicated that nonbinary youth report high levels of sexual violence. However, population-based studies in Sweden on sexual violence across gender identities and sexual orientations among those aged 16 to 29 years remain limited. AIM: This st

Sexual orientation, bullying for being labeled gay or bisexual, and steroid use among US adolescent boys.

Use of anabolic-androgenic steroids is a public health concern for adolescent boys. This study examined bullying based on being labeled gay/bisexual and steroid use among US adolescent boys, including sexual orientation disparities. Data from 2660 boys from the 2015 Youth Behavior Risk Survey were used. Among heterosexual boys, steroid use was higher among those who reported being bullied due to being labeled gay or bisexual. No such relationship existed among non-heterosexual boys. The results speak to the need to address issues of masculinity in clinical work with boys and young men.

Bisexuality: reassessing our paradigms of sexuality.

Sexuality research currently needs to re-examine critically its constructs of sexual orientation and identity for theoretical inconsistencies and simplistic assumptions about the nature of sexual desire continue to plague it. This becomes evident when one reviews how the confluence of heterosexual and homosexual desire in individuals is "explained" by theories that assume a basic dichotomy in sexual orientation. This article examines how categories such as homosexual, heterosexual, and bisexual have developed, and differentiates between their utility as social labels and as scientific construc

Family Planning for Sexual Minority Women.

The family planning needs of sexual minority women (SMW) are an understudied but growing area of research. SMW have family planning needs, both similar to and distinct from their exclusively heterosexual peers. Specifically, SMW experience unintended pregnancies at higher rates than their exclusively heterosexual peers, but factors that increase this risk are not well understood. Contraception use is not uncommon among SMW, but lesbian women are less likely to use contraception than bisexual or exclusively heterosexual women. High rates of unintended pregnancy suggest contraception is underuse

Social support networks among diverse sexual minority populations.

This article reports a study of the function and composition of social support networks among diverse lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) men and women (n = 396) in comparison to their heterosexual peers (n = 128). Data were collected using a structured social support network matrix in a community sample recruited in New York City. Our findings show that gay and bisexual men may rely on "chosen families" more than lesbian and bisexual women. Both heterosexuals and LGBs relied less on family and more on other people (e.g., friends, coworkers) for everyday social support (e.g., recreational and soc

Sexual identity group differences in child abuse and neglect.

Childhood abuse and neglect are pervasive problems among girls and young women that have numerous health consequences. Research suggests that sexual minority women are more likely than heterosexual women to report childhood abuse and neglect, but little is known about which sexual minority women are at greatest risk for these early adverse experiences. Using data from a pooled sample of women in a national probability study and in a large community-based study of sexual minority women designed to replicate the national study's methodology (pooled n = 953), we investigated rates and characteris

Human immunodeficiency virus isolation studies and antibody testing. Household contacts and sexual partners of persons with hemophilia.

Virus isolation studies and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody testing were performed on 87 household contacts of 68 HIV antibody-positive hemophilic patients to determine the extent that HIV could be transmitted through heterosexual or through nonsexual, but intimate contact. Human immunodeficiency virus seropositivity was established for the 68 hemophiliacs by immunofluorescence method or enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and confirmed by Western blot testing (for 66 patients). Fifty-one nonsexual contacts and 36 sexual partners of these hemophiliacs were tested for HIV antibody by

Mental disorders and sexual orientation in college students across 13 countries of differing levels of LGBTQ+ acceptance.

Mental health disparities have been reported among sexual minority individuals; minority stress theory posits that such disparities are a result of stigma and discrimination. We estimated the prevalence of mental disorders across sexual orientation groups among first-year college students and whether differences across sexual orientation groups varied by gender and country-level LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer) social acceptance. Using data (N = 53,175; 13 countries) from the World Mental Health Surveys International College Surveys, we performed multilevel logistic regressi

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Emotion Regulation Difficulties among Sexual Minority Adults in Residential Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

BACKGROUND: PTSD rates are higher among lesbian, gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority individuals (LGB+), compared to heterosexual individuals. PTSD also frequently co-occurs with substance use disorders (SUDs). However, little is known about comorbid PTSD-SUD among LGB+ individuals. Further research is important given elevated rates of PTSD and SUD among LGB+ individuals and to inform culturally responsive practice. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study examined trauma exposure, PTSD severity, and emotion regulation (ER) difficulties among LGB+ and heterosexual individuals in residentia

Trends of Mycoplasma genitalium infections in Berlin, Germany, 2017-2023.

OBJECTIVE: The cell wall-less species Mycoplasma genitalium is a sexually transmitted pathogen with a strong tendency to acquire resistance. Current knowledge on trends of resistance rates and differences between the at-risk population of men who have sex with men (MSM) and heterosexual patients, as well as on circulating genotypes in both groups, is limited. METHODS: Between August 2017 and December 2023, M. genitalium strains in 373 samples from patients (MSM: n = 269, non-MSM: n = 104) consulting at a specialized sexually transmitted infection practice in Berlin, Germany, were characterize

Population rates of HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis diagnoses by sexual orientation in New Zealand.

INTRODUCTION: Globally, gay and bisexual men (GBM) are over-represented in HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea cases. However, surveillance systems rarely provide meaningful measures of inequity, such as population-specific rates, due to a lack of sexual orientation denominators. HIV, gonorrhoea and syphilis are legally notifiable diseases in New Zealand (NZ); we calculate rates by sexual orientation for the first time. METHODS: We analysed 2019 national surveillance data on HIV, syphilis and gonorrhoea notifications disaggregated by sexual orientation. Unique health records identified duplicate not
