Bilateral hip and femoral fractures are rare. A 26-year-old male with multiple injuries including such fractures was successfully treated with a variety of internal fixation techniques, allowing early mobilization. It is important to consider the possibility of this fracture pattern in high-energy trauma.

Intra-articular pressure was measured in 94 hips in 81 children with Perthes' disease and various forms of synovitis of the hip. The pressure was elevated in Perthes' disease (3.4 kPa), transient synovitis (17.3 kPa), septic arthritis (20.2 kPa), reactive arthritis (28.0 kPa) and arthritis with urticaria (32.3 kPa). Neonatal hip examination is only effective with the help of a large number of experts. Teamwork between pediatrician, pediatric orthopedic surgeon and general practitioner seems to be essential. Best results can be achieved with a hip examination during the first 4 days of life and controls with 3 months and with 12 months. The technic of clinical examination and diagnosis is described. Because of hip dysplasias without any clinical signs the importance of an x-ray of the hip with an age of 3 months is emphasized.

An examination of the ongoing neonatal hip screening program at the Vancouver General and Grace Hospitals in Vancouver, British Columbia, over a 9 1/2 year period revealed that of the 32,480 newborns examined, 321 (9.8 per 1,000 live births) had unstable hips. An analysis of 142 dislocations from a multicentre study of 6774 total hip replacements is reported. The incidence of dislocation was 2.1 per cent. Patients with neuromuscular disorder, those in a confused mental state, and those undergoing revision operations are at special risk. A prospective 6 months' study of 518 patients with hip fractures was undertaken. The patients were classified into four social function groups on admission to hospital and again at the follow-up, according to their dependence on home-help and other services of the social welfare system. A bilateral hip lameness has been found in young beef bulls of the Hereford, Aberdeen Angus, Galloway and Charolais breeds in the United Kingdom, North America and Australia. The incidence is usually small and sporadic, but up to half of the male animals on one farm may be affected clinically by the time they are one year old. Hip involvement in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a common and disabling problem. The clinical and x-ray records of 87 patients with definite AS (Rome criteria) were examined to define and characterize their hip disease. Clinical hip disease was present in 33 cases (38%), was usually bilateral (91%), and tended to begin early in the disease course; it was the cause of 50% of the Class III and IV disability in the entire study group.
