Therapeutic implications of viewing sexual identity in terms of essentialist and constructionist theories.

One of the most challenging developments in recent historical studies and in empirical research in sociology has been constructionist theories relating to "sexual personalities." The "constructionist" view is that sexual identity is labile and can be therapeutically modified. In clinical work, this has presented an alternative view of the development of social sex-role and sexual orientation. Previously, views of sexual identity as a fixed personal characteristic (the "essentialist" view) provided clinicians with ways of treating psychologically distressed people either by transsexual conversi

Conceptions of homosexuality and sodomy in Western history.

This essay explores recent attempts to write the history of homosexuality and identifies two distinct approaches: the biographical approach, which reports on the private lives of individuals and charts the formation of homosexual subcultures; and the approach that studies the labeling and treatment of homosexual men and women by the heterosexual majority and examines the reasons why hatred of homosexuality increases and decreases over time. The author warns against applying modern definitions to words that have had different connotations. An an example of the possible confusion, the author dis

Role expectations and definitions: a comparison of female transsexuals and lesbians.

A new study on female transsexuals and lesbians is reported. A matched-group comparison of 15 women in each sample suggests that the two groups do not differ in overall intelligence, although lesbians, unlike female transsexuals, tended to have a significantly higher verbal IQ than performance IQ. Both groups showed a similar response pattern on the Embedded Figures Test but differed on the Draw-A-Person Test, The Guilford-Zimmerman Temperament Survey, and the Bem Androgyny Scale. Whereas the female transsexual group reflected a more rigid gender role stereotype, the lesbians saw their options

Recombinant human granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor ameliorates zidovudine-induced neutropenia in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)/AIDS-related complex.

To evaluate the effect of recombinant granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) on patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or AIDS-related complex (ARC) who were intolerant to zidovudine because of neutropenia, we performed a randomized, open-label study in which patients were assigned to one of two groups. Zidovudine was discontinued in group A patients before instituting GM-CSF treatment and was restarted in a graduated fashion over 4 weeks. Group B patients continued on full-dose (1,200 mg/d) zidovudine therapy while beginning GM-CSF therapy. A total of 17 pa

Marginalization and social change processes among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in Swaziland: implications for HIV prevention.

Swaziland has among the highest national adult HIV prevalence globally. There is limited knowledge of HIV vulnerabilities and prevention engagement among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) persons in the context of Swaziland's criminalization of consensual same-sex practices. This study explored social processes of marginalization to assess how they could potentiate HIV vulnerabilities and limit engagement in HIV prevention services. Additionally, we assessed positive change to better understand existing strategies employed by LGBT persons to challenge these HIV prevention barriers.

Reassessing cardiometabolic health disparities among young adult sexual minority women: Evidence from a population-based cohort.

PURPOSE: We compared objective measures of cardiometabolic health (CMH) between women who identify as lesbian/gay or bisexual (LGB) and women who identify as heterosexual. In addition, we aimed to test whether group differences in stress reactivity partially explained disparities in CMH health. METHODS: Participants from a longitudinal study were identified for enrollment in 2017. The LGB group self-identified as LGB in 2017 (n = 239), and the heterosexual group identified as straight or heterosexual in each year that sexual identity was asked (study years 2010-2017) (n = 160). A systematic review of the prevalence and associated factors of mental health conditions among lesbian, bisexual, and other sexual minority women in Southeast Asia.

The present review explored the prevalence and factors of mental health conditions among lesbian, bisexual, and other sexual minority women (LBSW) in Southeast Asia. It found that the rates of significant depression and depressive symptoms range from 10% to 93.2%, with a median of 27.7%. This wide range can be due to a study conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic, which found elevated depression, stress, and anxiety rates. Studies also highlight high levels of sadness, hopelessness, sleep and eating problems, fatigue, and suicidal thoughts among LBSW. Suicide rates indicate that LBSW have high
