On 8 September 2010, the Ontario Superior Court rejected a claim that Canadian Blood Services (CBS) is violating Section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (Charter) by refusing blood donations from men who have had sex with other men (MSM) since 1977. The case arose because CBS sued Kyle Freeman, a gay man, for lying about his sexuality on the screening questionnaire in order to give blood.

An SIS/SAS model of gonorrhea transmission in a population of highly active men-having-sex-with-men (MSM) is presented in this paper to study the impact of safe behavior on the dynamics of gonorrhea prevalence. Safe behaviors may fall into two categories-prevention and self-awareness. Prevention will be modeled via consistent condom use and self-awareness via STD testing frequency. Stability conditions for the disease free equilibrium and endemic equilibrium are determined along with a complete analysis of global dynamics. The control reproductive number is used as a means for measuring the ef

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on the risk of Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae transmission from oropharynx to urethra. We examined urethral C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae positivity among men who have sex with men (MSM) seen at San Francisco City Clinic (San Francisco, CA) during 2007.
METHODS: All patients who sought care at the San Francisco City Clinic (the only municipal sexually transmitted disease clinic in San Francisco) received a standardized interview conducted by clinicians. We estimated urethral C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae positivity for 2 groups of visits

Neurosyphilis and neurological complications from syphilis may be commoner in HIV disease. With outbreaks of early syphilis in HIV positive individuals being observed over recent years, rare neurological manifestations of secondary syphilis will be observed more commonly. We describe a case of an HIV positive individual whose first presenting feature of early syphilis was a polyradiculopathy.

This paper focuses on the expression of internalized homophobia in men, arguing that the most powerful clinical use of this term depends upon its applicability to any man, without limitation to those whose primary object choice is homosexual. A number of dynamic situations are described to which the term might apply, elaborated by examples from contemporary culture and clinical practice. A central dynamic elucidated here is the move from an anxiety-ridden, first person singular voice to the promised safety of a first person plural voice--that is, from the dangerous position of "I want" to the

We describe a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) seropositive man with acquired eyelash trichomegaly and alopecia areata. This combination of clinical manifestations is intriguing since the new onset of elongated eyelashes in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome has usually been associated with severe immunosuppression and alopecia areata has a presumed autoimmune etiology that requires T cell activation. The occurrence of these dichotomous conditions illustrates the potential selective pathogenesis of progressive HIV infection.

Research shows that gay and bisexual males are at increased risk for disordered eating symptoms (DES); however, studies examining DES amongst lesbians and bisexual women have produced mixed findings. Furthermore, few studies have included questioning or "unsure" individuals. This study examined DES symptoms in adolescents and young adults across self-reported sexual attraction and behavior. Participants were recruited from ten primary care sites in Pennsylvania and administered the Behavioral Health Screen (BHS) - a web-based screening tool that assesses psychiatric symptoms and risk behaviors

The current study tested a conceptual model based on social-cognitive theory (Bandura, 1986), highlighting the influence of attitudes toward sexual minority individuals, training hours, affirmative counseling self-efficacy, and beliefs about affirmative practice on therapist engagement in lesbian and gay affirmative practice. We recruited via the Internet 443 heterosexual psychologists (n = 270), clinical social workers (n = 110), and marriage and family therapists (n = 63) residing in various parts of the United States. The majority of participants identified as female (70%) and White (88%).

OBJECTIVE: To compare self-identified lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) college students to heterosexual peers and to each other on alcohol, tobacco and other drug (ATOD) measures and alcohol use consequences.
METHODS: Preexisting data (Falls 2009-2011) from the American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment (ACHA-NCHA-II) were analyzed.
RESULTS: Bisexual college students had greater odds of ATOD use than heterosexual and gay/lesbian students. Bisexual women had the highest levels of use. LGB students had more serious consequences due to alcohol use.
CONCLUSIONS: ATOD

There is little understanding in Australia of the special issues faced by gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in end-of-life care and advance care planning. This exploratory study aimed to achieve an initial understanding of these issues to inform the development of a larger study involving gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender service users. Consultations were carried out with 19 service providers and 6 gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community members in the Northern Rivers and metropolitan Sydney areas of New South Wales, Australia. Participants reported barriers to health

The purpose of this article is to examine and deconstruct the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) barrio (community) of Chueca in Madrid, Spain, from political and sociological perspectives. First, we develop a critical framework for understanding the historical, political, social, cultural, and economic changes that took place in Spain after Franco's death in relation to LGBT issues. Ethnographic research was conducted from May to July 2007 in the Spanish cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Ibiza, and focused primarily on the community of Chueca. A social constructionist perspective w

This study examines how locational (region and locale), community-level (school district poverty and adult educational attainment), and school district-level (district size and ratios of students to key school personnel) variables are related to indicators of hostile school climate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth. Indicators of hostile climate included frequency of homophobic remarks and victimization regarding sexual orientation and gender expression. We used data from a national survey of LGBT secondary school students (N = 5,420; 57.6% female; 65.5% White; mean age

The purpose of this research was to compare differences in the experiences of gay men and lesbian women who describe experiences of depression or depressed mood. The 2 main research questions were how do descriptions of depression and daily life differ between gay males and lesbian females. To this end, Weblogs containing narratives of 19 gay men and 19 lesbian women were coded, analyzed, and compared using qualitative content analysis methods. Differences in described sources of depression and responses to depression, but not features of depression were found. Women and men also differed with

We examined records of all HIV antibody tests performed at anonymous publicly funded (PF) sites and by home collection (HC) testing for residents of San Francisco from August 1996 to December 1997. Although far fewer tests were performed by HC testing than at PF sites (715 versus 8712, respectively), a higher proportion of HC testers reported no prior history of HIV testing (33.1% versus 17.9%). HIV seroprevalence was higher among PF tests (1.8%) than among HC tests (0.9%). Compared with PF testers, HC testers were less likely to be gay men, lesbian or bisexual women, heterosexual women, Afric
