Various organisms, especially arthropods, are able to live as parasites in ant nests and to prey upon ant broods without eliciting any aggressive behaviour in the hosts. Understanding how these intruders are able to break the ants' communication codes in their favour represents a challenging and intriguing evolutionary question. We studied the chemical strategies of three European hoverfly species, Microdon mutabilis (parasitic on Formica cunicularia), M. analis (parasitic on Lasius emarginatus) and M. devius (parasitic on L. distinguendus). The peculiar slug-like larvae of these three species

Non-random assemblages have been described as a common pattern of flea co-occurrence across mainland host species. However, to date, patterns of flea co-occurrence on islands are unknown. The present work investigates, on one hand, whether the decrease in the number of species on islands affects the pattern of flea co-occurrence, and on the other hand, how the cost of higher flea burdens affects host body mass. The study was carried out in the Canary Islands (Spain) using null models to analyse flea co-occurrence on Rattus rattus and Mus musculus. Results supported aggregation of flea species

Differences in testes arrangement and length of post-testicular region between Australian specimens of Paraschistorchis seychellesiensis sensu Magro, Cutmore, Carrasson & Cribb, 2023 and the original description of Paraschistorchis seychellesiensis (Toman, 1989) Blend, Karar & Dronen, 2017 from the Indian Ocean have raised a question whether such variations are intraspecific or interspecific variations. To address this, in-depth morphological descriptions and species delimitation analyses were conducted using a combination of comparative morphology, multivariate classification analyses, and ho

The escalating challenges of antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogens have necessitated the exploration of alternative therapeutic strategies. Among these, bacteriophage therapy has regained attention as a promising approach to combat multidrug-resistant bacteria. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and lyse specific bacterial strains, making them attractive candidates for targeted antimicrobial treatment. Burkholderia multivorans, a Gram-negative bacterium, is known to cause opportunistic infections, particularly in individuals with a compromised immune system or with cystic fibrosis.

Pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis jirovecii poses a serious threat, particularly to immunocompromised patients such as those with HIV/AIDS, transplant recipients, or individuals undergoing chemotherapy. Its diagnosis is challenging because current methods, such as microscopy and certain molecular tests, have limitations in sensitivity and specificity, and require specialized equipment, which delays treatment initiation. In this context, CRISPR-Cas12-based methods offer a promising alternative: they are rapid, highly specific, sensitive, and low-cost, enabling more timely and accessible detectio

The global dissemination of multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogenic bacteria requires the rapid research and development of alternative therapies that can support or replace conventional antibiotics. Among MDR pathogens, carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae (CR-Kp) are of particular concern due to their extensive resistance profiles, global dissemination in hospital environments, and their major role in some life-threatening infections. Phages, or some of their components, are recognized as one of the potential alternatives that might be helpful to treat bacterial infections. In this study

Burkholderia infections are a significant concern in people with CF and other immunocompromising disorders, and are difficult to treat with conventional antibiotics due to their inherent drug resistance. Bacteriophages, or bacterial viruses, are now seen as a potential alternative therapy for these infections, but most of the naturally occurring phages are temperate and have narrow host ranges, which limit their utility as therapeutics. Here we describe the temperate Burkholderia phage Milagro and our efforts to engineer this phage into a potential therapeutic by expanding the phage host range

BACKGROUND: We conducted a large-scale, passive regional survey of ticks associated with wildlife of the eastern United States. Our primary goals were to better assess the current geographical distribution of exotic Haemaphysalis longicornis and to identify potential wild mammalian and avian host species. However, this large-scale survey also provided valuable information regarding the distribution and host associations for many other important tick species that utilize wildlife as hosts.
METHODS: Ticks were opportunistically collected by cooperating state and federal wildlife agencies. All t

COVID-19 is a severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) caused by a new coronavirus (CoV), SARS-CoV-2, which is closely related to SARS-CoV that jumped the animal-human species barrier and caused a disease outbreak in 2003. SARS-CoV-2 is a betacoronavirus that was first described in 2019, unrelated to the commonly occurring feline coronavirus (FCoV) that is an alphacoronavirus associated with feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious and has spread globally within a few months, resulting in the current pandemic. Felids have been shown to be susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 i

Spirochetes of the family Borreliaceae are, with one exception, tick-borne pathogens of a variety of vertebrates. The family at present comprises two genera: Borrelia (Swellengrebel), which includes the agents of relapsing fever, avian spirochetosis, and bovine borreliosis, and Borreliella (Gupta et al.), which includes the agents of Lyme disease and was formerly known as 'Borrelia burgdorferi sensulato complex'. The two genera are distinguished not only by their disease associations but also biological features in the tick vector, including tissue location in unfed ticks and transovarial tran

The infection dynamics of Opisthorchis viverrini metacercariae was analyzed in cyprinid fish from endemic areas in Mukdahan Province, Thailand, and Khammouane Province, Lao PDR. The fish were collected during the cool-dry (November-February), hot-dry (March-May), and rainy (June-October) seasons in 2017. They were examined by the digestion method, and the infection status was statistically analyzed by study area, season, and fish size. The prevalence (no. of fish positive/no. of fish examined × 100) and metacercarial intensities (no. of metacercariae detected/no. of fish positive) of O. viverr

Hepatitis E virus (HEV), the causative agent of hepatitis E, is an understudied but important pathogen. HEV typically causes self-limiting acute viral hepatitis, however chronic infection with neurological and other extrahepatic manifestations has increasingly become a significant clinical problem. The discovery of swine HEV from pigs and demonstration of its zoonotic potential led to the genetic identification of very diverse HEV strains from more than a dozen other animal species. HEV strains from pig, rabbit, deer, camel, and rat have been shown to cross species barriers and infect humans.

Giardia spp. (Diplomonadida: Hexamitidae) is an important and widely studied protozoan parasite with worldwide distribution. Nowadays have six described species, and the most important probably is Giardia duodenalis due to the zoonotical potential that some assemblages have. Many studies analysing samples from wild animals have detected Giardia in captive environment, including the zoonotic type. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of Giardia sp. in wild captive animals at São Paulo Zoo, using conventional parasitological techniques (direct smear, passive flotation with satur

Paranoplocephala omphalodes is a widespread parasite of voles. Low morphological variability within the genus Paranoplocephala has led to erroneous identification of P. omphalodes a wide range of definitive hosts. The use of molecular methods in the earlier investigations has confirmed that P. omphalodes parasitizes four vole species in Europe. We studied the distribution of P. omphalodes in Russia and Kazakhstan using molecular tools. The study of 3248 individuals of 20 arvicoline species confirmed a wide distribution of P. omphalodes. Cestodes of this species were found in Microtus arvalis,

Several mosquito-borne Flaviviruses such as Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), West Nile virus (WNV), Dengue Virus (DENV), and Zika virus (ZIKV) can cause severe clinical disease. Being zoonotic, Flaviviruses infect a wide variety of terrestrial vertebrates, which dependent of the virus-host interactions, can enhance ongoing epidemics and maintain the virus in the environment for prolonged periods. Targeted species can vary from amphibians, birds to various mammals, dependent on the virus. For many mosquito-borne flaviviruses the spectrum of targeted species is incompletely understood, in part

BACKGROUND: Leishmania parasites cause visceral leishmaniasis (VL), an important infectious disease that is endemic to large parts of the world and often leads to epidemics. Sand flies are the primary transmission vector for the parasite in endemic regions. We hypothesized that sheep might serve as an overlooked reservoir for Leishmania transmission to humans due to the asymptomatic nature of infection in many species. As a preliminary test of this hypothesis, the aim of the present study was to investigate sheep in an area of China that is endemic for the desert sub-type of zoonotic VL and es

BACKGROUND Leishmania major is an Old World species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis and is transmitted by Phlebotomus papatasi and Phlebotomus duboscqi. In Brazil, two isolates from patients who never left the country were characterised as L. major-like (BH49 and BH121). Using molecular techniques, these isolates were indistinguishable from the L. major reference strain (FV1). OBJECTIVES We evaluated the lipophosphoglycans (LPGs) of the strains and their behaviour in Old and New World sand fly vectors. METHODS LPGs were purified, and repeat units were qualitatively evaluated by immunoblotting.

BACKGROUND: Whilst vastly understudied, pathogens of non-native species (NNS) are increasingly recognised as important threats to native wildlife. This study builds upon recent recommendations for improved screening for pathogens in NNS by focusing on populations of Gammarus roeselii in Chojna, north-western Poland. At this location, and in other parts of continental Europe, G. roeselii is considered a well-established and relatively 'low-impact' invader, with little understanding about its underlying pathogen profile and even less on potential spill-over of these pathogens to native species.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Toxoplasmosis in immunocompromised patients is associated with a high mortality rate. Molecular techniques are important tools to diagnose acute disease in immunocompromised patients, but there are various methods with variable efficiency. Some of them have been validated for the diagnosis of congenital toxoplasmosis, but the impact of their use has not been evaluated in immunocompromised patients.
RECENT FINDINGS: Toxoplasmosis is of increasing importance in non-HIV immunocompromised patients. In addition, the picture of disease shows greater severity in South America, bot
