Co-occurrence and niche overlap among gill parasites of the white mullet (Mugil curema Valenciennes, 1836) (Osteichthyes: Mugilidae) from the western Atlantic, Brazil.

Different groups parasitize the gills of fishes, and the organisms can interact in positive, negative, or neutral ways, depending on parasitic abundance, environmental conditions, and the availability of resources. Here, we studied the distribution of ectoparasites on the gills of the mullet Mugil curema in the Cabedelo port region (Brazil), asking if (1) the gill parasites of M. curema fix on specific host gill arches and/or (2) co-occur in the same gill arches within a host individual; (3) if the abundance of one parasite taxon affects the abundance of another on the same gill arches; and (4

Parasite-mediated selection drives an immunogenetic trade-off in plains zebras (Equus quagga).

Pathogen evasion of the host immune system is a key force driving extreme polymorphism in genes of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Although this gene family is well characterized in structure and function, there is still much debate surrounding the mechanisms by which MHC diversity is selectively maintained. Many studies have investigated relationships between MHC variation and specific pathogens, and have found mixed support for and against the hypotheses of heterozygote advantage, frequency-dependent or fluctuating selection. Few, however, have focused on the selective effects of

High temperatures augment inhibition of parasites by a honey bee gut symbiont.

Temperature affects growth, metabolism, and interspecific interactions in microbial communities. Within animal hosts, gut bacterial symbionts can provide resistance to parasitic infections. Both infection and populations of symbionts can be shaped by the host body temperature. However, the effects of temperature on the antiparasitic activities of gut symbionts have seldom been explored. The Lactobacillus-rich gut microbiota of facultatively endothermic honey bees is subject to seasonal and ontogenetic changes in host temperature that could alter the effects of symbionts against parasites. Welfare assessment of Thoroughbred horses naturally infected with gastrointestinal parasites in Southern Brazil: Quantifying the host-parasite relationship.

Horse welfare assessment (HWA) does not account for individual or herd parasite infection. This study investigated the connection between HWA and individual parasite fecal egg count (FEC) in 90 Thoroughbred horses. All horses were naturally infected with gastrointestinal parasites and were evaluated for individual welfare indicators and FEC monthly, for 12 months. Horses were divided into three groups of 30 mares, 30 foals aged between 13 and 16 months (G2013), and 30 foals aged between two months and one year (G2014). A horse welfare protocol was developed and 1024 assessments were carried ou

Diversity, consistency, and seasonality in parasite assemblages of two sympatric marine fish Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich, 1768) (Perciformes: Sparidae) off the coast of Algeria in the western Mediterranean Sea.

Various host characteristics (i. e., feeding habits, geographic distribution) and habitat characteristics (i.e., seasonality) influence the structure of parasite assemblages. To compare the parasite assemblages of hosts representatives of two genera of the same fish family, simultaneously occupying a geographic region, and to examine if seasonal variations influence parasite occurrence and abundance, we examined the parasite assemblages of two sympatric marine fish, Pagrus pagrus (n = 308) and Pagellus bogaraveo (n = 315) off the coast of Algeria in the western Mediterranean. Specimens were co

Influence of host diet and phylogeny on parasite sharing by fish in a diverse tropical floodplain.

The patterns of parasite sharing among hosts have important implications for ecosystem structure and functioning, and are influenced by several ecological and evolutionary factors associated with both hosts and parasites. Here we evaluated the influence of fish diet and phylogenetic relatedness on the pattern of infection by parasites with contrasting life history strategies in a freshwater ecosystem of key ecological importance in South America. The studied network of interactions included 52 fish species, which consumed 58 food types and were infected with 303 parasite taxa. Our results show

Controlling and coordinating development in vector-transmitted parasites.

Vector-borne parasites cause major human diseases of the developing world, including malaria, human African trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, filariasis, and schistosomiasis. Although the life cycles of these parasites were defined over 100 years ago, the strategies they use to optimize their successful transmission are only now being understood in molecular terms. Parasites are now known to monitor their environment in both their host and vector and in response to other parasites. This allows them to adapt their developmental cycles and to counteract any unfavorable conditions t

Host-pathogen interaction in the tissue environment during Plasmodium blood-stage infection.

Human malarial infection occurs after an infectious Anopheles mosquito bites. Following the initial liver-stage infection, parasites transfo … s, avoiding tissue damage. The regulation of the protective and inhibitory immune responses through host-parasite interactions allows chronic Plasmodium infection. In this review, we discuss underlying interaction mechanisms relevant for developing effective strategies against malaria.

Female biased sex-ratio in Schistosoma mansoni after exposure to an allopatric intermediate host strain of Biomphalaria glabrata.

For parasites that require multiple hosts to complete their development, the interaction with the intermediate host may have an impact on parasite transmission and development in the definitive host. The human parasite Schistosoma mansoni needs two different hosts to complete its life cycle: the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (in South America) as intermediate host and a human or rodents as final host. To investigate the influence of the host environment on life history traits in the absence of selection, we performed experimental infections of two B. glabrata strains of different geog

Lipid droplet dynamics are essential for the development of the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum.

Lipid droplets (LDs) are organelles that are central to lipid and energy homeostasis across all eukaryotes. In the malaria-causing parasite Plasmodium falciparum the roles of LDs in lipid acquisition from its host cells and their metabolism are poorly understood, despite the high demand for lipids in parasite membrane synthesis. We systematically characterised LD size, composition and dynamics across the disease-causing blood infection. Applying split fluorescence emission analysis and three-dimensional (3D) focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopy (FIB-SEM), we observed a decrease in LD

Socialized medicine: individual and communal disease barriers in honey bees.

Honey bees are attacked by numerous parasites and pathogens toward which they present a variety of individual and group-level defenses. In this review, we briefly introduce the many pathogens and parasites afflicting honey bees, highlighting the biology of specific taxonomic groups mainly as they relate to virulence and possible defenses. Second, we describe physiological, immunological, and behavioral responses of individual bees toward pathogens and parasites. Third, bees also show behavioral mechanisms for reducing the disease risk of their nestmates. Accordingly, we discuss the dynamics of

Dual Role of Host Toll-Like Receptor 3 in Parasitic Diseases.

Parasitic diseases, caused by a diverse array of parasites, remain a substantial threat to global health. Toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) represents a pivotal element in the innate immune system, distinguished by an ability to signal via the TIR-domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β (TRIF)-dependent pathway upon detecting pathogen-derived double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), exosomal RNA (exoRNA), and long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). Predominantly localized on endosomal membranes, TLR3 is extensively expressed in neurons, immune cells, fibroblasts, and epithelial cells. Upon activation, TLR3 engage

Investigating immune responses to parasites using transgenesis.

Parasites comprise diverse and complex organisms, which substantially impact human and animal health. Most parasites have complex life-cycles, and by virtue of co-evolution have developed multifaceted, often life-cycle stage-specific relationships with the immune system of their hosts. The complexity in the biology of many parasites often limits our knowledge of parasite-specific immune responses, to in vitro studies only. The relatively recent development of methods to stably manipulate the genetic make-up of many parasites has allowed a better understanding of host-parasite interactions, par…

Effect of temperature on the Bulinus globosus - Schistosoma haematobium system.

BACKGROUND: Given that increase in temperature may alter host-parasite relationships, the anticipated rise in temperature due to global warming might change transmission patterns of certain diseases. However, the extent to which this will happen is not well understood. METHODS: Using a host-parasite system involving Bulinus globosus and Schistosoma haematobium, we assessed the effect of temperature on snail fecundity, growth, survival and parasite development under laboratory conditions. RESULTS: Our results show that temperature may have a non-linear effect on snail fecundity and snail grow

Th2 and Th1 Responses: Clear and Hidden Sides of Immunity Against Intestinal Helminths.

Intestinal helminthiases affect millions of people worldwide, mainly in developing regions, where they cause a significant negative impact on human health and socioeconomic growth of affected populations. However, intestinal helminthiases are still among the most neglected tropical diseases. Protective immunity against intestinal helminths is associated with development of type 2 responses. Nevertheless, in some host-intestinal helminth combinations, local Th1 responses are initiated, inducing chronicity. The usage of helminth-mouse models is useful for elucidating the mechanisms behind the in

Modelling gastrointestinal parasitism infection in a sheep flock over two reproductive seasons: in silico exploration and sensitivity analysis.

In reproducing ewes, a periparturient breakdown of immunity is often observed to result in increased fecal egg excretion, making them the main source of infection for their immunologically naive lambs. In this study, we expanded a simulation model previously developed for growing lambs to explore the impact of the genotype (performance and resistance traits) and host nutrition on the performance and parasitism of both growing lambs and reproducing ewes naturally infected with Teladorsagia circumcincta. Our model accounted for nutrient-demanding phases, such as gestation and lactation, and incl

Parasite fecundity decreases with increasing parasite load in the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis infecting Atlantic salmon Salmo salar.

Aggregation is common amongst parasites, where a small number of hosts carry a large proportion of parasites. This could result in density-dependent effects on parasite fitness. In a laboratory study, we explored whether parasite load affected parasite fecundity and survival, using ectoparasitic salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis Krøyer, 1837) infecting Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) hosts. We found a significant reduction in fecundity with higher parasite load, but no significant effect on survival. Together with previous findings, this suggests that stronger competition amongst female lice

(Self-) infections with parasites: re-interpretations for the present.

Previously, scientists sometimes resorted to infecting themselves or colleagues with parasites, usually to assess the pathogenicity and obtain insight into the life cycles of the parasites, host specificity, and epidemiology. However, with recent research addressing the possible beneficial impact of intestinal helminths on a range of immune-mediated diseases in humans, these studies offer valuable information, although many are now considered unethical owing to a lack of experimental oversight and informed consent. Here, we critically review cases in which humans were deliberately infected wit
