Use of onion extract, heparin, allantoin gel in prevention of scarring in chinese patients having laser removal of tattoos: a prospective randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: With rapid advancement in cutaneous laser therapy, Q-switched lasers have become the standard treatment for tattoo removal. The … 82.3+/-11.6%. There were 7 tattoos in 7 patients that developed scarring, 4 patients had permanent hypopigmentation, and 3 patients had transient hyperpigmentation. In contrast, 55 patients with 68 tattoos in the control group had a mean clearing rate of 80.4+/-11.3%. Among them, 16 tattoos in 14 patients developed scarring, 4 patients had permanent hypopigmentat …

PLACK Syndrome in Two Unrelated Indian Children Caused by Novel Pathogenic Variants in the CAST Gene.

PLACK syndrome is an autosomal recessively inherited genodermatosis characterized by peeling skin, leukonychia, acral keratoses, cheilitis, and knuckle pads caused by variants in CAST gene. This report describe two unrelated Indian children with typical features of PLACK syndrome and homozygous novel variants in the CAST gene.

Choroidal hypopigmented lesions: A review.

Choroidal hypopigmented lesions (CHLs) represent significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their diverse and complex etiologies, including neoplastic, infectious, and inflammatory origins. Accurately differentiating between benign lesions with good prognoses and malignant or life-threatening conditions is crucial in directing the appropriate management and avoiding unnecessary invasive interventions. We integrate the latest research and clinical guidelines on advanced multimodal imaging modalities, emphasizing their comparative diagnostic value across varied etiologies of CHLs.

Basement membrane thickness helps to differentiate hypopigmented mycosis fungoides from clinical and pathological mimickers.

BACKGROUND: Hypopigmented mycosis fungoides (HMF) is a relatively rare subtype of mycosis fungoides (MF). The diagnosis of HMF can be quite challenging in case of insufficient diagnostic criteria due to the diverse conditions that present with hypopigmented lesions. This study aimed to evaluate the usefulness of the assessment of the basement membrane thickness (BMT) in the diagnosis of HMF. METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted on biopsy specimens of 21 HMF and 25 non-HMF cases who presented with hypopigmented lesions. The thickness of the basement membrane was evaluated in periodic a

Vitiligo and systemic sclerosis: Are they associated?- Lessons from a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiological relationship of vitiligo with systemic sclerosis (SSc) remains to be precisely evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the bidirectional association between vitiligo and SSc. METHODS: A population-based study was carried out to compare vitiligo patients (n = 20,851) with age-, sex- and ethnicity-matched control subjects (n = 102,475) regarding the incidence of new-onset and the prevalence of preexisting SSc. Adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were calculated by the Cox regression and logistic regression, respectively. RESULTS: The incide

Biallelic KITLG variants lead to a distinct spectrum of hypomelanosis and sensorineural hearing loss.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic variants in KITLG, a crucial protein involved in pigmentation and neural crest cell migration, cause non-syndromic hearing loss, Waardenburg syndrome type 2, familial progressive hyperpigmentation and familial progressive hyper- and hypopigmentation, all of which are inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. OBJECTIVES: To describe the genotypic and clinical spectrum of biallelic KITLG-variants. METHODS: We used a genotype-first approach through the GeneMatcher data sharing platform to collect individuals with biallelic KITLG variants and reviewed the literature for o…

Mycosis fungoides in pediatric population: comprehensive review on epidemiology, clinical presentation, and management.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is the most common type of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. However, it is rare in pediatric population. Most of the cases of pediatric MF present with hypopigmented patches and/or various other forms, which may often mimic common childhood dermatoses, thereby causing a delay in the diagnosis. There are no established treatment guidelines for pediatric MF. As the progression of childhood MF is extremely rare and it has an indolent course, it is usually diagnosed at an early stage (IA, IB, IIA), and hence phototherapy with a response rate of >80% is a well-established effective

Hypopigmented Macules as Manifestation of Lichen Planus and Lichen Planopilaris.

Lichen planus (LP) is an idiopathic inflammatory disease of the skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Classic cutaneous LP is characterized by violaceous flat-topped papules that typically favor the extremities. LP on the scalp, otherwise known as lichen planopilaris, classically presents with scarring alopecia, perifollicular erythema and follicular prominence. Although LP pigmentosus presents primarily as hyperpigmentation, there is only one previous report of hypopigmented LP. In this report, the authors report 2 cases of LP that presented primarily as hypopigmented macules in 2 African

Spectrophotometer is useful for assessing vitiligo and chemical leukoderma severity by quantifying color difference with surrounding normally pigmented skin.

BACKGROUND: Acquired skin hypopigmentation has many etiologies, including autoimmune melanocyte destruction, skin aging, inflammation, and chemical exposure. Distinguishing lesions from normally pigmented skin is clinically important to precisely assess disease severity. However, no gold standard assessment method has been reported. We aimed to investigate whether spectrophotometers are useful for assessing vitiligo and rhododendrol (4-(4-hydroxyphenol)-2-butanol) (Rhododenol® )-induced leukoderma disease severity by quantifying skin color. METHODS: Mexameter® MX18 and CM-700d spectrophotomet…

[A girl with hypopigmented skin lesions].

A 9-year-old girl visited the department of Dermatology with an asymptomatic hypopigmented skin eruption on her upper legs, groins and trunk since 7 years. Histopathological analysis established the diagnosis of hypopigmented mycosis fungoides, a rare subtype of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma which is most commonly seen at younger age. The lesions are successfully treated with clobetasol 0.05% ointment 4 days a week.

Hydroquinone-induced depigmentation: case report and review of the literature.

Melasma is an acquired cutaneous disorder caused by an overproduction of melanin by the enzyme tyrosinase. Melasma remains a therapeutic challenge and no definitive standard therapy exists. Although hydroquinone (HQ) has emerged as the most common treatment, its popularity has recently waned because of concerns about its potential carcinogenicity and manufacturing challenges. The adverse effects of HQ range from the common irritant contact dermatitis to the less frequent exogenous ochronosis (EO). Previous reports suggest that the risk of leukoderma from HQ treatment is limited to individuals
