Internet use among head and neck cancer survivors in the North West of England.

In general, use of the internet by patients in their healthcare is increasing. However, its use specifically among those with head and neck cancer in the UK has not been reported. The aims of this study were to report access to the internet by survivors of head and neck cancer, to indicate where it fits within their information sources, how they have used it, and how they might use it in future. A question on its use has been included in annual surveys of patients since 2006. Patient-reported access to the internet increased from 32% in 2006 to 54% in 2010. There were considerable differences …

Long-term Lyme disease antibiotic therapy beliefs among New England residents.

Most physicians prescribe Lyme disease antibiotic therapy regimens that are recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Infectious Disease Society of America, and the National Institutes of Health. An alternative approach by some physicians consists of prolonged antibiotic treatment for >2 months because they believe that Lyme disease often results in persistent Borrelia burgdorferi infection. Understanding how patients perceive the disease is important for effective doctor-patient communication. We conducted interviews and surveys on Block Island, Rhode Island, and Stor

Materials and allergens within spectacle frames: a review.

The materials that have been reported as causing allergic contact dermatitis within spectacle frames are identified, and their most likely location on the frame is highlighted. The lack of any real control over spectacle frame quality and content is indicated to be a problem, as is the difficulty in determining the true source of many frames. Much of the information must be obtained from anonymous sources in the industry, historical 'common knowledge' of indeterminate source or reports of dermatological problems.

Health Information on Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis From Search Engines and Twitter: Readability Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is proven to prevent HIV infection. However, PrEP uptake to date has been limited and inequitable. Analyzing the readability of existing PrEP-related information is important to understand the potential impact of available PrEP information on PrEP uptake and identify opportunities to improve PrEP-related education and communication. OBJECTIVE: We examined the readability of web-based PrEP information identified using search engines and on Twitter. We investigated the readability of web-based PrEP documents, stratified by how the PrEP document was ob

Assessing quality of NHS Numbers for Babies data and providing gestational age statistics.

This paper investigates the quality of information in the National Health Service (NHS) Numbers for Babies (NN4B) dataset and provides statistics on gestational age at birth in relation to live/stillbirth status, multiple birth status, age of mother, babies' sex, and birthweight. Gestational age information is not recorded at the registration of live births and the NN4B system provides the opportunity to access this information for all live and stillbirths in England and Wales. All NN4B records for babies born in England and Wales in 2005 were used in this analysis. Data quality was generally

Clinical reasoning about new symptoms despite preexisting disease: sources of error and order effects.

BACKGROUND: Previous work that studied the evaluation of new, atypical symptoms in patients with preexisting diseases indicated that physicians largely ignored the past medical history and therefore erred in their diagnoses, when compared to a Bayesian analysis. Other studies have shown that the order in which information is presented to a decision maker can affect the inferences drawn, again contrary to a Bayesian standard. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate the source of disparity between clinical judgment and Bayesian analysis and to investigate the effect of alternative o

Integration of visual and tactile information in reproduction of traveled distance.

In the natural world, self-motion always stimulates several different sensory modalities. Here we investigated the interplay between a visual optic flow stimulus simulating self-motion and a tactile stimulus (air flow resulting from self-motion) while human observers were engaged in a distance reproduction task. We found that adding congruent tactile information (i.e., speed of the air flow and speed of visual motion are directly proportional) to the visual information significantly improves the precision of the actively reproduced distances. This improvement, however, was smaller than predict

Perceptions of Obesity and Treatment Decision-Making Among Hispanic-Latino Adults: Barriers to Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) is underutilized among Hispanic-Latino adults despite higher obesity rates and related comorbidities. Although barriers such as cost, language, and limited provider referrals are documented, sociocultural and psychological perceptions about obesity and obesity care remain less understood. This study aimed to explore the beliefs, experiences, and information sources influencing perceptions of obesity, obesity treatment, and patient-provider communication, and how these factors relate to MBS decision-making in this population. METHODS: Semi-struc…

Psychosocial experiences of competitive rugby players on the "long, long journey" to recovery following ACL ruptures and reconstruction.

Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injuries are serious and potentially career-ending. Reconstruction surgery and extended rehabilitation typically follow, but some athletes never attain the same level of sport performance. The psychosocial experiences of athletes who sustain ACL injuries and their cognitive appraisal, emotional and behavioral responses to the injury, and reconstruction require further attention during the different recovery phases. The aim is to explore these psychosocial experiences, social support needs and sources thereof of competitive athletes who sustained unilateral ACL

Comprehensive Strategy for Identifying Extracellular Vesicle Surface Proteins as Biomarkers for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a liver disorder that has become a global health concern due to its increasing prevalence. There is a need for reliable biomarkers to aid in the diagnosis and prognosis of NAFLD. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are promising candidates in biomarker discovery, as they carry proteins that reflect the pathophysiological state of the liver. In this review, we developed a list of EV proteins that could be used as diagnostic biomarkers for NAFLD. We employed a multi-step strategy that involved reviewing and comparing various sources of information. Firstly,
