[The immuno-microbiological characteristics of the small intestine and the translocation of the enteral microflora in acute intestinal obstruction].

The complex examination of 72 patients with acute ileus (AI) of nontumor nature with different severity of endotoxicosis was carried out. The study revealed that AI was accompanied by deep suppression of the immunosecretory and motor evacuatory function of the small intestine, as well as by its pronounced bacterial contamination, mainly due to the significant quantitative prevalence of Gram-negative microflora. The combination of these factors played the key role in the increase of the permeability of the enteric barrier for symbiotic microflora and its massive translocation from the intestina

Intestinal metaplasia with adherent Helicobacter pylori: a hybrid epithelium with both gastric and intestinal features.

Helicobacter pylori seem to avoid areas of intestinal metaplasia in the gastric mucosa, but attachment of these bacteria to epithelium with the appearance of incomplete intestinal metaplasia has been documented. To characterize the nature of the epithelium to which H pylori was attached, we carried out an immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibodies against gastric surface mucous cell mucins (M1), blood group-related carbohydrates antigens (Le(a), sialyl Le(a), Le(b), type 1H, and type 2H) and sialyl Tn antigen. The results of this study suggest that these areas of H pylori attachment

[Chronological observation on intestinal histopathology and intraepithelial lymphocytes in the intestine of rats infected with Metagonimus yokogawai].

The relationship between the intestinal histopathology and number and position of intraepithelial lymphocytes (IEL) was observed chronologically in the small intestine of rats experimentally infected with Metagonimus yokogawai. Fifteen Sprague-Dawley rats were orally infected each with 3,000 metacecariae, and 3 were kept uninfected for controls. Three rats each were sacrificed on the day 5, 10, 15, 24 and 70 post-infection (PI) and samples of the small intestine, 5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm and 70 cm posterior to the pylorus were taken. The samples were processed routinely and stained with Giemsa. The

Intestinal perforation caused by non specific idiopathic ulcer of the small intestine. A case report.

A case of non specific idiopathic ulcer of the small intestine in a 79-year-old patient is reported. On admission he presented with acute abdomen and was submitted to wide intestinal resection. The features of this rare disease (only 370 cases described until 1987), which has an undefined etiopathogenesis, severe symptoms, and poses diagnostic problems, are discussed.

Neuron-specific enolase as a marker for intestinal neurons. An immunocytochemical study of the human intestinal tract.

Surgical specimens from various parts of the human intestinal tract as well as suction biopsy specimens, including mucosa and submucosa of the rectum, were fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin by routine procedures. The distribution of immunoreactive areas indicating the presence of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) was then determined by using a sheep anti-human-NSE antiserum prepared in our laboratory. The immunocytochemical method revealed, in distinct contrast to other tissue components, the cell bodies of ganglion cells in the submucosa (Meissner's plexus) and in the muscle layers (Auer

[Gastro-intestinal electromyography: interest in the study of mechansims of regulation of intestinal motility (author's transl)].

Investigations we carried out in man and animals in order to study the relationships between the electrical and the mechanical activities of the intestine, and to precise the role of BER in the regulation of intestinal motility. In the dog, an intestinal movements transducer allowed to establish that spiking activities were concomitant with circular contractions, and that these two phenomena were rhythmed by the slow waves. Under basal conditions, the longitudinal movements occurred independently; under stimulation longitudinal movements occurred independently; under stimulation longitudinal r

Intestinal beta-galactosidases. I. Separation and characterization of three enzymes in normal human intestine.

Previous studies based on work in the rat and preliminary experiments with human intestine have suggested that two beta-galactosidases are present in small intestine, and it is believed that only one of these enzymes is a lactase important for the digestion of dietary lactose. The high prevalence of intestinal lactase deficiency in man prompted more complete study of these enzymes. Human intestinal beta-galactosidases were studied by gel filtration on Sephadex G-200 and Biogel P-300 as well as by density gradient ultracentrifugation. Gel filtration produced partial separation into three peaks

Exercise pretreatment intervention alleviates intestinal dysbiosis and improves intestinal dysfunction in stroke rats.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal dysfunction is a common and detrimental complication following stroke, closely linked to poor outcomes. Emerging evidence implicates gut microbiota dysbiosis and intestinal barrier disruption in this process. This study investigated whether exercise preconditioning (EP) could protect against post-stroke gastrointestinal impairment and elucidated the underlying mechanisms involving the gut microbiota-intestine axis. METHODS: A meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the global incidence of post-stroke constipation. In vivo, Sprague-Dawley rats underwent 2 weeks of

Metabolic complications of home parenteral nutrition and chronic intestinal failure and indications for intestinal transplantation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Patients on home parenteral nutrition (HPN) for chronic intestinal failure (CIF) may develop several metabolic complications whose pathogenesis is multifactorial, due to factors "CIF-related" and "HPN-related" factors. In a few cases, a life-saving or a rehabilitative intestinal transplantation (ITx) may be required. The learning objectives of this educational paper is to inform readers on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of HPN/CIF-related metabolic complications as well as on the indications for ITx. METHODS: The present review is based on the guideli
