Hearing loss of acquired syphilis: diagnosis confirmed by incudectomy.

Syphilis, both congenital and acquired, may cause sensori-neural hearing loss. Congenital syphilis presents in two forms: early (infantile), and late (tardive). Acquired syphilis, both secondary and tertiary, may cause deafness. The clinical course of the acquired and congenital forms are similar. Sensori-neural hearing loss with low discrimination scores may affect both ears simultaneously or sequentially, and vestibular complaints are common. A clinical diagnosis can be made on the basis of history, the presence of other stigmata of syphilis, and serological tests, including the FTA-ABS. The

[A rare case of ocular scarrings in a patient with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease].

We here report the case of a 27-year old patient, followed-up in our Department for treatment of chronic Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease ( VKH disease). Fundus examination showed depigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelium and of the choroid, appearing as a pseudotumoral peripapillary lesion. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease is a multisystem disorder, characterized by bilateral granulomatous panuveitis with serous exudative multifocal retinal detachment. Pathophysiology of this disease is unknown, but an immunological cellular reaction against melanocytes of the skin, the meninges, the retina, t

Outcomes in the treatment of inner ear decompression sickness with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The primary objective of this review was to evaluate the effectiveness of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) in the treatment of inner ear decompression sickness (IEDCS). Secondary objectives were to summarise the diver characteristics, HBOT parameters and outcome measures. METHODS: All descriptive observational study designs including case series and individual case reports involving divers suffering IEDCS treated with HBOT were included. PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL and EMBASE were used to search for texts reporting the outcome for divers treated with HBOT. Eligible studies were appra

Radiological presence of vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle region in patients with unilateral Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between vascular compression of the vestibulocochlear nerve and audio-vestibular symptoms remains controversial. We aimed to examine the radiological features of vascular loops signs in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and internal auditory canal (IAC) in patients with unilateral Ménière's disease (MD). METHODS: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with unilateral definite MD and 69 control subjects (138 ears) were enrolled. All subjects received magnetic resonance imaging of CPA-IAC. The configuration of vascular loops in CPA-IAC, based on the Kazawa classification s

Volume ratio and distribution rate in patients with orthostatic vertigo/dizziness using MR imaging: a comparison with vertiginous diseases.

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic dizziness/vertigo (ODV) is characterized by lightheadedness owing to postural changes. AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To measure the endolymphatic space (ELS)/total fluid space (TFS) volume ratio and the distribution rate of endolymphatic fluid (ELF) of patients with ODV and compare them with those of control subjects (CS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 22 patients (44 ears) with ODV and 52 controls (104 ears, CS). The ELS/TFS volume ratio (%) and distribution rate (%) of the inner ear components were measured using 3-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging. RESULTS: I

Sensorineural Hearing Loss in Sjögren's Syndrome.

Sjögren's syndrome is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by systemic dysfunction of exocrine glands, mainly the salivary and lachrymal glands. Sjögren's syndrome consists of two forms: primary Sjögren's syndrome, which is characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth without autoimmune diseases; and secondary Sjögren's syndrome, which is characterized by symptoms associated with other autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus. Disease severities vary considerably from mild glandular dryness to severe glandular involvement with numerous extraglandular and systemic features. Se

Clinical high-resolution imaging and grading of endolymphatic hydrops in Hydropic Ear Disease at 1.5 T using the two-slice grading for vestibular endolymphatic hydrops in less than 10 min.

BACKGROUND: Hydropic Ear Disease (Menière) is one of the most common inner ear disorders and one of the most common causes of vertigo attacks. The underlying pathology is a distension of the endolymphatic space of the inner ear, termed endolymphatic hydrops. However, the unequivocal morphologic confirmation of ELH has been restricted to post-mortem histologic analysis until 2007, when the first clinical MR imaging report demonstrated ELH in living patients with Menière's disease at 3 T combined with intratympanic application of contrast. Imaging techniques have since then evolved further. Howe
