Concentrations and spatial patterns of organic contaminants in tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) eggs at United States and binational Great Lakes Areas of Concern, 2010-2015.

Tree swallows, Tachycineta bicolor, were sampled across the Great Lakes basin in 2010 through 2015 to provide a system-wide assessment of current exposure to organic contaminants. The results provide information identified as critical by regulators to assess the "bird or animal deformity or reproductive problems" beneficial use impairment. Eggs were collected from 69 sites across all 5 Great Lakes, including 27 Areas of Concern (AOCs), some with multiple sites, and 10 sites not listed as an AOC. Concentrations of organic contaminants in eggs were quantified and compared with background and rep…

Coupling of spectroscopy and nitrogen-oxygen isotopes unveils the mechanisms of dissolved organic matter and nitrate pollution in lakes within the agro-pastoral transition zone.

Lakes in arid and semi-arid regions are subjected to severe ecological stress, such as organic pollution, eutrophication, and salinization, due to climate change and human activities. This study investigates Chagannur Lake, a typical arid-region lake that is representative and ecologically sensitive in Northern China's agro-pastoral ecotone, to uncover its pollution characteristics and mechanisms. We employed fluorescence spectroscopy and stable isotope analysis to trace dissolved organic matter (DOM) and nitrate sources. The DOM composition was dominated by microbial metabolic byproducts and …

Distribution and fate of antibiotics in water-sediment-biofilm phases and their potential risks in urban lakes within a large-scale city in eastern China.

Urban lakes often serve as the key nodes of material and energy flows in the river network ecosystems in large-scale cities. A comprehensive understanding of the multimedium distribution and fate of antibiotics in the lacustrine water-sediment-biofilm system is the critical prerequisite for their accurate ecological risk assessment and regional control and remediation. This study presents a comprehensive investigation of 21 antibiotics across six families in the water, sedimentary and biofilm phases of six typical urban lakes in Nanjing, a large-scale city in eastern China. The fates of these …

Characteristics and degradation of carbon and phosphorus from aquatic macrophytes in lakes: Insights from solid-state (13)C NMR and solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy.

Water extractable organic matter (WEOM) derived from macrophytes plays an important role in biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, including carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in lakes. However, reports of their composition and degradation in natural waters are scarce. Therefore, compositions and degradation of WEOM derived from six aquatic macrophytes species of Tai Lake, China, were investigated by use of solid-state (13)C NMR and solution (31)P NMR spectroscopy. Carbohydrates were the predominant constituents of WEOM fractions, followed by carboxylic acid. Orthophosphate (ortho-P) wa…

A quantitative assessment of thyroid histopathology of herring gulls (Larus argentatus) from the Great Lakes and a hypothesis on the causal role of environmental contaminants.

Thyroids from 213 adult herring gulls of both sexes were collected during incubation from nine colonies in the Great Lakes basin of eastern North America between 1974 and 1983, and from a single colony in the Bay of Fundy from 1977 to 1982. Qualitative and quantitative histological assessment revealed that the majority of the gulls from the Great Lakes basin suffered from goiter. These thyroids had a greater mass than those from the Bay of Fundy, and were microfollicular and frequently hyperplastic. The histopathology was similar to that previously observed in Pacific salmon from the Great Lak…

Nuclear stains with soluble metachrome metal mordant dye lakes. The effect of chemical endgroup blocking reactions and the artificial introduction of acid groups into tissues.

Following our study on the effect of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) extraction on nuclear staining with soluble metal mordant dye lakes covering 29 dye lakes we chose a series of lakes representing the three groups: (1) readily prevented by DNA removal, (2) weakened by DNA extraction but not prevented, (3) unaffected by DNA removal, for application of other endgroup blockade reactions. The lakes selected were alum and iron hematoxylins, iron alum and ferrous sulfate galleins, Fe2+ gallo blue E, iron alum celestin blue B, iron alum fluorone black and the phenocyanin TC-FeSO4 sequence. Spatiotemporal monitoring of water quality degradation and trophic state in a severely polluted tropical urban lake in Southern India.

Bellandur Lake in Bangalore, India represents one of the most severely polluted urban water bodies in South Asia, necessitating systematic monitoring for environmental management. This study employed Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument imagery to assess spatiotemporal variations in water quality parameters from January 2023 to December 2025. Six water quality indicators were derived using established remote sensing algorithms: chlorophyll-a (estimated using the Normalised Difference Chlorophyll Index as the primary method), turbidity, total suspended solids, coloured dissolved organic matter,

Evolution of lake microbial structure and function under climatic and anthropogenic forcings: Insights from sedimentary ancient DNA.

Structure and function of lake microorganisms are sensitive to environmental disturbances; yet their differential responses to climatic and anthropogenic forcings over centennial scales remain poorly understood. Here, we analyzed a sediment core from Lake Daihai in northern China, combining metagenomics and stable isotope analyses. Our results revealed that microbial community assembly was dominated by deterministic processes, whereas stochasticity increased notably after 1850, coinciding with the termination of the Little Ice Age and intensified human impacts. Notably, microbial community str

Ecotoxicological and health risk assessing of heavy metals and microplastics in African catfish (Clarias gariepinus) of Burullus Lake, Egypt.

One of the most serious pollution problems in aquatic lake systems is contamination by heavy metals (HMs) and microplastics (MPs). These pollutants cause serious harm to aquatic organisms. The research focused on studying HMs (Mn, Cd, Pb, Ni, and Cr) and MPs in organs of Clarias gariepinus inhabitant of Burullus Lake. Water and live fish samples were collected from the northwestern part of the lake, preserved and then transferred for laboratory analyses. HMs were analyzed using digestion methods with nitric acid and hydrogen peroxide. For MPs, 10% potassium hydroxide was used. The metal ions f

Microplastic occurrence, source tracking and integrated risk assessment in a linked lake-river system of the Yangtze River Delta.

Microplastics (< 5 mm) pose a growing threat to freshwater ecosystems, yet systematic assessments in inland lake-river networks remain scarce. This study addresses this gap by investigating microplastic contamination across four environmental compartments (surface water, lakeshore soil, borehole groundwater, and well water) in China's Wujiang District and its Yuandang Lake-a system with limited self-purification capacity. The relationship between Wujiang District and Yuandang Lake exemplifies the 'jurisdiction-watershed' dynamic and epitomizes the 'development-conservation' interplay. Key find…

Hydrological modification drives century-scale eutrophication and invasion increasing invertebrate assemblage heterogeneity in Lake Fúquene, Colombia.

Hydrological alteration, eutrophication and macrophyte invasion generate novel ecological states and biotic homogenization in shallow lakes. As these stressors increasingly co-occur and unfold over decades to centuries, disentangling their combined effects on invertebrate assemblages remains however challenging. To assess their long-term (decades-centuries) interactions on driving aquatic invertebrates, we analysed three ²¹⁰Pb-dated sediment cores spanning contrasting dominance of the invasives Egeria densa (submerged), Pontederia crassipes (floating) and Azolla filiculoides (floating) in Fúqu…

Gill ionocytes of the Lake Magadi tilapia (Oreochromis Alcolapia grahami), an extremophilic teleost native to a highly alkaline environment.

The Magadi tilapia thrives in arguably the most extreme aquatic environment on earth for fish, the hot springs of Lake Magadi in Kenya with its severe water chemistry: pH 10, alkalinity 300 mEq·L-1. This fish is 100% ureotelic yet has an osmoregulation pattern typical of marine teleosts, although the dominant water anion is HCO3- rather than Cl-. The gills must actively export base equivalents (HCO3- + CO32-) and Na+ against strong electrochemical gradients, yet simultaneously take up Cl-, for which a hypothetical "Laurent model" based on ionocyte structure alone was proposed. This model has b

Integrative transcriptomic and metabolomic analyses of the drought response mechanisms of stem spines in desert plants from the Ebinur Lake.

Stem spines are key adaptive organs in desert plants, playing a critical role in resisting drought stress and maintaining plant survival. However, the molecular mechanisms governing their responses to drought remain insufficiently characterized. We investigated the stem spines of two representative halophytic shrubs from the Ebinur Lake Wetland desert region, Alhagi sparsifolia and Nitraria tangutorum, under a natural drought gradient: mild drought (Mi), 15.51% ± 0.61%; moderate drought (Mo), 8.87% ± 0.77%; severe drought (S), 3.34% ± 0.26%), and integrated transcriptomic and metabolomic analy

Oil spill dispersion in freshwater under ice conditions: A pilot study of Lake Erie using coupled models.

Oil spills in ice-covered freshwater systems pose significant environmental risks, yet predictive modeling frameworks for such conditions remain underdeveloped. This study develops and validates a coupled modeling system integrating the General NOAA Operational Modeling Environment (GNOME) with the Great Lakes Operational Forecast System (GLOFS) to simulate oil spill dispersion under varying ice conditions. Lake Erie served as the study area, with model validation performed using observed drifter trajectory data. Six hypothetical oil spill scenarios were simulated across freezing, stable, and …

Preliminary indications of water-quality-related trace-element signals in aquatic moss balls from a Patagonian lake.

Naturally formed aquatic moss balls from Laguna Parrillar, Chilean Patagonia, have been described as a bryological phenomenon, but their elemental composition has not been evaluated. This technical note provides an initial characterization of their whole-aggregate trace-element signal. Ninety moss balls were collected from the same shoreline section in 2022-2024, and concentrations of 17 elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Data were evaluated using univariate and multivariate analyses. Fe, Al, and Mn dominated the elemental profile, whereas Hg, Mo, and Cd

Sediminibacterium planctonicum sp. nov. and Sediminibacterium longum sp. nov., isolated from surface lake and river water.

Two aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, motile, rod-shaped bacteria, designated as strains TEGAF015T and KACHI17T, were isolated from surface lake and river waters in Japan. Strains TEGAF015T and KACHI17T had cell dimensions of ~0.4-0.6×1.3-2.9 µm and 0.4-0.5×2.5-4.8 µm (width×length), respectively. Strain KACHI17T was positive for casein hydrolysis, whereas strain TEGAF015T was negative. Phylogenetic analyses based on the 16S rRNA gene (1,290 bp) and 120 ubiquitous single-copy protein-encoding genes (5,035 aa) revealed that TEGAF015T and KACHI17T formed clusters closely related to Sediminibacterium
