Language intervention and disruptive behavior in preschool children with autism.

Disruptive behaviors are often exhibited by children with severe disabilities during difficult teaching tasks. Because learning verbal communication can be a difficult task for nonverbal children with autism, disruptive behaviors are common during such interventions. The purpose of this experiment was to assess whether the incorporation of parameters of natural language interactions and motivational techniques might reduce disruptive behavior during language teaching tasks. Within a repeated reversals design with order of conditions and number of sessions varied within and across children, tre…

Early language and communicative abilities of children with periventricular leukomalacia.

Ten 2-year-old children with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), a brain injury associated with prematurity, were evaluated using language samples. Five children scored less than 80 on cognitive testing (delayed). Five children with this disorder and normal cognitive scores were assessed at two ages, matched with the delayed group on CA and developmental level. The delayed group produced significantly fewer lexical tokens and spontaneous verbal utterances than did the CA-matched group. No significant differences were observed between the delayed group and either comparison group on other measu…

Can regulatory peptides be regarded as words of a biological language.

Despite the complexities of individual systems, neurocrine, endocrine, and growth factor-mediated signaling systems show striking similarities in the molecules they use for communication and in their signal-transduction mechanisms. In contrast to the traditional view in cell biology, which has focused on the regulatory aspects of neurocrine and endocrine messengers and growth factors, an analysis of various aspects of peptidergic cell-to-cell communication on the basis of information theory is suggested. According to theorems for efficient and error-free encoding, the differences in rate and d

The language-reading relationship in normal and reading-disabled children.

In this study, the word retrieval, phonological awareness, sentence completion, and narrative discourse processing skills of 93 reading-disa … ldren best accounted for the variance in their reading scores. These findings suggest that the oral language skills of normally achieving and reading-disabled children may relate differently to their reading comprehension at different age levels.

Degeneration of speech, language, and hearing in a patient with mucopolysaccharidosis VII.

Mucopolysaccharidosis VII (MPS-VII) is probably the rarest of the mucopolysaccharidoses; literature reveals only 20 cases. We have had the opportunity to study and treat such a child in our clinic, and this paper documents his speech, language, and hearing. Results demonstrated a delay with respect to his chronological age in all cognitive, linguistic, and social domains. He had a mixed hearing loss which could have contributed to his diminishing speech and language abilities; he had chronic otitis media. After 59 h of speech and language intervention (over a period of 19 months), primarily fo…

Speech-language pathologists' opinions on the management of velopharyngeal insufficiency.

A 16-item questionnaire designed to survey opinions on the management of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) was distributed to all members (N = 296) of the American Cleft Palate Association who were speech-language pathologists. Questionnaires were completed by 173 respondents (58.4 percent). There were differences of opinion among speech-language pathologists on various management issues related to VPI, including the value of instrumental assessment of VPI, the importance of oral examination of velopharyngeal function, and the effectiveness of speech therapy in the treatment of VPI. The impli…

Language deficits in depression: comparisons with SDAT and normal aging.

In order to contribute to the definition of the structure of cognitive deficits in major depression/unipolar, language processing was studied in 20 elderly persons with major depression/unipolar, 23 elderly with SDAT, and 20 normal elderly. Measures administered included the Western Aphasia Battery, Test for Syntactic Complexity, and Chomsky Test of Syntax. Results indicate that depressed elderly performance on structural language variables of repetition, naming, auditory verbal comprehension, syntax, and reading is significantly better than performance of the SDAT sample. In contrast, results…

The role of speech language pathologists in the management of dysphagia, 1989.

Speech-language pathologists involved in the management of patients with dysphagia provide services that include evaluation, diagnosis, and rehabilitation. Dysphagia is a swallowing disorder that may be due to various neurological, structural, and cognitive deficits. While dysphagia can afflict any age group, it most often presents among the elderly. Rehabilitation efforts by the speech-language pathologist are undertaken after a medical diagnosis and referral have been made. The dysphagia evaluation begins with a bedside examination that is sometimes followed by a video-fluoroscopic study. Th…

Narratives: A window on the oral substrate of written language disabilities.

Oral precursors underlying competence with literacy activities are approached through a review of studies on narrative comprehension and production in children identified as language learning disabled (LLD). Areas addressed include a general overview of narrative types, the kinds of narrative knowledge that are acquired, the nature of story organization, and developmental acquisitions in story recall and generation. Nine studies on the oral comprehension and production of language learning disabled children are then compared with respect to methodological issues and patterns of performance. Im…

Hearing, speech, and language outcome in infants with extreme immaturity.

There appears to be an increase in the number of premature infants who survive treatment in neonatal intensive care units. Such an increase is expected to result in a greater number of children with developmental delays in a variety of dimensions, including auditory and psycholinguistic abilities. This report presents hearing and speech/language data on a sample of 266 high-risk infants. The data revealed that approximately one-third of the population exhibited hearing impairment and/or speech/language problems. The need for early identification and periodic assessment with this population is …

The diagnosis of muscular dystrophy in patients referred for language delay.

The diagnosis of muscular dystrophy is usually made on the basis of gait difficulties or a history of late achievement of normal motor milestones. Other well-described delays, notably in the area of expressive language skills, can provide additional clues to this diagnosis. We present three patients referred to The Developmental Evaluation Clinic because of problems with expressive language observed in school, who ultimately were found to have muscular dystrophy. They are presented to underscore the association of expressive language delay in patients with muscular dystrophy, and to stress the…

Effects of speech and language treatment on recovery from aphasia.

Language recovery in aphasic patients who received one of three types of speech and language treatment was compared with that in aphasic patients who received no treatment. One hundred aphasic patients were followed from 2 to 4 weeks postonset for 1 year or until recovery, using a standardized test battery administered at systematic intervals. Both treatment methods provided by trained speech-language pathologists were efficacious, while the method provided by trained nonprofessionals approached statistical significance. Small group size prevented resolution of the question of whether one type…

The relationship of limb apraxia severity to motor and language deficits.

Ipsilateral motor and symbolic/linguistic skills were examined in normals and three left hemisphere damaged groups with no, mild, or moderate-severe limb apraxia. When the two apraxic groups were pooled they demonstrated poorer response inhibition and reading relative to the nonapraxic group. There were no significant group differences on motor or language tasks when the three brain damaged groups were separately compared. These results indicate there is a limited relationship between limb apraxia and some motor and linguistic skills, but the relationship was not greater for motor than linguis…

Genetic influences on learning disabilities and speech and language disorders.

This paper is a comprehensive review of known examples of genetically influenced learning disabilities (LDs) and speech and language disorders (SLDs). The review is divided between 2 broad classes of studies: (a) those which begin with an LD or SLD phenotype that appears to be familial and attempt to learn more about the specifics of genetic transmission, if any; and (b) those which begin with a group of individuals, all of whom share a given documented genetic risk factor, to see if it leads to a specific LD or SLD. Included in the first category are familial dyslexia, stuttering, and other s…
