BACKGROUND: Small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) are widely used surgical methods to correct myopia with comparable efficacy, predictability, and safety. We examined and compared the early changes of tear protein profiles after SMILE and FS-LASIK surgery in order to find possible differences in the initial corneal healing process.
METHODS: SMILE operations for 26 eyes were made with Visumax femtosecond laser. In FS-LASIK surgery for 30 eyes, the flaps were made with Ziemer FEMTO LDV Z6 femtosecond laser and stromal ablation

The aim of this study was to compare two different refractive surgery approaches in correction of myopia with or without astigmatism. In patients where one eye underwent sub-Bowman keratomileusis (SBK) and the other eye photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), the objective and subjective results were retrospectively compared during the six-month follow-up. Eighty four patients (168 eyes) were involved in this retrospective contralateral study. The mean preoperative spherical refraction was -3.88 diopters (D) and the mean cylinder was -0.82 D for all eyes. Each patient underwent SBK on one eye and P

Femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) remains a mature corneal refractive procedure, but its role is being reshaped by small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE), transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy, and phakic intraocular lens implantation. This Mini Review proposes a phenotype-centered expert framework, derived from the available literature, for considering when FS-LASIK's strengths--customized excimer ablation, rapid rehabilitation, enhancement flexibility, presbyopic planning, and hyperopic treatment--may outweigh its flap-related and ocular surface limitati

Underexpanded stents are a dreaded complication of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and are a major predictor of stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosis. Lesion preparation and plaque modification before stent implantation are essential to prevent stent underexpansion and optimize the technical outcomes of PCI. Once stent underexpansion occurs, the treatment options are limited. New devices for the treatment of complex calcified lesions have emerged in the past few years, and experience has accumulated with their use in the treatment of underexpanded stents. This review aims to provid

Phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK) involves treating anterior corneal lesions by superficial corneal ablation using an excimer laser (193 nm). Some of the commonly treated conditions include recurrent corneal erosions (RCE), corneal dystrophies, spheroidal degeneration, keratoconus, and corneal scars. We discuss various techniques of PTK including large area PTK, focal PTK, and multifocal PTK and alternatives to PTK. Masking agents like hyaluronate, methylcellulose, and dextran are recommended to help achieve a better outcome when ablating irregular corneal surfaces. Antifibrotic agents like m

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this report was to describe a single case of recurrent interstitial keratitis in a young patient leading to keratoconus-like corneal changes.
RESULTS: Over the 2 years follow-up, the patient developed clinical signs of keratoconus with Vogt's striae, Fleischer Ring and paracentral stromal thinning in the affected eye only. The tomographic measurements revealed a rapid reduction of corneal thickness from 581 to 303 μm and an irregular steepening of the pathological cornea. True net corneal power increased from 42.8 to 48.8 dioptres (D) and maximal power of the anteri

INTRODUCTION: Deep burns often result in hypo-pigmentation, referred to as leucoderma which has a similar psychosocial impact on the patients as that of vitiligo. Several tissue grafting methods have been reported to treat post-burn leucoderma.
METHODS: A simple method consisting of harvesting a donor skin sample, preparation of an epidermal cell suspension and the transplantation of the cell suspension on to a dermabraded recipient area, was performed in a clean procedure room. No special laboratory set-up was used for the cell separation procedure. Patients were treated with 18 sessions of

Photorefraction keratectomy was performed with a Nidek EC-5000 excimer laser in 29 patients (58 eyes) with slight and medium myopia aged 40-60 years. After 12 months the mean visual acuity in the leading eye without correction was 0.82 +/- 0.12 in patients aged 40-50 (group 1) and 0.76 +/- 0.11 in those aged 51-60 years (group 2). The mean refraction of the leading eye in group 1 was -0.97 +/- 0.02 diopters and in group 2 0.72 +/- 0.04 diopters. In group 1 the resultant undercorrection was -1.6 +/- 0.4 diopters (107% of planned undercorrection) and in group 2 -1.8 +/- 0.4 diopters (72% of plan

The semi-automatic generation of a multilayer cornea model was to study the process of wound healing and the influence of substances modulating wound healing. We generated in vitro corneal human tissues including epithelium and a semi automatedly produced stroma equivalent based on a hydrogel matrix. The maturation was evaluated using impedance spectroscopy, histology and immunofluorescence over 21 days. Inflicting corneal wounds by clinical excimer laser, injury was observed under treated with gentamicin and non-treated for 14 days by histology and optical coherence tomography (OCT). The semi

BACKGROUND: The comparative effects of phototherapy and topical therapy in patients with vitiligo remain unclear. A network meta-analysis (NMA) was conducted to assess which combination therapy was more beneficial for patients with vitiligo.
METHODS: This study analyzed phototherapy, including narrowband ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) and 308-nm excimer laser/light (EL) combined with topical therapies. Randomized controlled trials were sourced from PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library. Data analysis was based on a random-effects model, and surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) curves employed

PURPOSE: To evaluate the thermal variations during photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) induced by a Laserscan 2000 flying spot excimer laser.
METHODS: Thermal changes during PRK were recorded using a non-contact infrared thermometer on 58 eyes with an attempted correction ranging from -1.25 to -9.00 D. The eyes were randomly divided into two groups to test the thermal effects of two different ablation scan techniques: sequential and randomized modes. Thermal measurements were also performed during myopic ablations on polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) test plates.

BACKGROUND: Keratorefractive lenticule extraction (KLEx) is a widely used refractive procedure, but intraoperative suction loss remains a critical complication. While the faster laser frequency of the VisuMax 800 theoretically reduces this risk, it can still occur, occasionally presenting as sliding suction loss. In this phenomenon, the globe shifts while partial suction is maintained, resulting in a complete but decentered lamellar plane. This creates a surgical dilemma where standard re-docking protocols risk double cuts. In this report, we describe the first case of using the CIRCLE softwar

BACKGROUND: Apart from the conventional utilization of ICL implantation for the correction of refractive errors, its recent applications extend to correcting refractive errors post laser refractive surgery. Notably, the development of cataracts stands out as a prevalent postoperative complication, often associated with low vault. Previous cases have demonstrated successful management of cataracts with ICL through the combination of FLACS and ICL removal coupled with IOL implantation, resulting in favorable postoperative visual outcomes. Herein, we present a case of cataract with low vault ICL
