Co-occurrence across time and space of drug- and cannabinoid- exposure and adverse mental health outcomes in the National Survey of Drug Use and Health: combined geotemporospatial and causal inference analysis.

BACKGROUND: Whilst many studies have linked increased drug and cannabis exposure to adverse mental health (MH) outcomes their effects on whole populations and geotemporospatial relationships are not well understood. METHODS: Ecological cohort study of National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) geographically-linked substate-shapefiles 2010-2012 and 2014-2016 supplemented by five-year US American Community Survey. Drugs: cigarettes, alcohol abuse, last-month cannabis use and last-year cocaine use. MH: any mental illness, major depressive illness, serious mental illness and suicidal thinkin

Barriers to using new needles encountered by rural Appalachian people who inject drugs: implications for needle exchange.

BACKGROUND: Using a new needle for every injection can reduce the spread of infectious disease among people who inject drugs (PWID). No previous study has examined new needle use barriers among PWIDs residing in the rural Appalachian part of the United States, an area currently in the midst of a heroin epidemic. OBJECTIVE: Therefore, our primary aim was to explore self-reported barriers to using a new needle by PWID attending a needle exchange program (NEP). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of PWID attending two NEPs in rural West Virginia located in the heart of Central Appala

Semi-synthetic cannabinoids: Recent developments, analytical challenges and strategic responses.

The emergence and proliferation of semi-synthetic cannabinoids (SSCs) represents a significant evolution in the European new psychoactive substances (NPS) landscape. SSCs, are substances that mimic the effects of delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC or delta-9-THC), the substance primarily responsible for the major psychoactive effects of cannabis. They are marketed as 'legal' replacements to cannabis and delta-9 THC and can be produced from cannabidiol (CBD) extracted from low-THC cannabis (hemp). Since the first detection of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) in Europe in late 2022, the SSC market has r

Bioaccumulation and Depletion of the Antibiotic Sulfadiazine 14C in Lambari (Astyanax bimaculatus).

Antibiotics are present in the environment, primarily due to their release through wastewater treatment plants, agricultural practices, and improper disposal of unused medications. In the environment, these drugs can be bioaccumulated by organisms and transferred along the food chain. This is a problem when considering the consumption of fish meat. In the United States, legislation stipulates that the maximum residue limit for sulfadiazine (SDZ) should not exceed 100 μg kg-1. Lambari fishes have potential economic importance in aquaculture, as they are relatively easy to breed and can be raise

Influence of pesticide regulation on acute poisoning deaths in Sri Lanka.

OBJECTIVES: To assess in a developing Asian country the impact of pesticide regulation on the number of deaths from poisoning. These regulations, which were implemented in Sri Lanka from the 1970s, aimed to reduce the number of deaths - the majority from self-poisoning - by limiting the availability and use of highly toxic pesticides. METHODS: Information on legislative changes was obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, national and district hospital admission data were obtained from the Sri Lanka Health Statistics Unit, and individual details of deaths by pesticide poisoning were obtaine

Equity in Digital Mental Health Interventions in the United States: Where to Next?

Health care technologies have the ability to bridge or hinder equitable care. Advocates of digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) report that such technologies are poised to reduce the documented gross health care inequities that have plagued generations of people seeking care in the United States. This is due to a multitude of factors such as their potential to revolutionize access; mitigate logistical barriers to in-person mental health care; and leverage patient inputs to formulate tailored, responsive, and personalized experiences. Although we agree with the potential of DMHIs to adva

An introduction to the clinical toxicology of volatile substances.

Acute poisoning with organic solvents and other volatile compounds now usually follows deliberate inhalation (volatile substance abuse) or ingestion of these compounds. Solvents from adhesives, typewriter correction and dry cleaning fluids, cigarette lighter refills (butane) and aerosol propellants are commonly abused. The major risk is that of sudden death. Arrhythmias leading to cardiac arrest are thought to cause most deaths, but anoxia, respiratory depression and vagal stimulation leading to cardiac arrest may also contribute, as may indirect causes such as aspiration of vomit or trauma. Patient-Reported Outcome Measures in Safety Event Reporting: PROSPER Consortium guidance.

The Patient-Reported Outcomes Safety Event Reporting (PROSPER) Consortium was convened to improve safety reporting by better incorporating the perspective of the patient. PROSPER comprises industry, regulatory authority, academic, private sector and patient representatives who are interested in the area of patient-reported outcomes of adverse events (PRO-AEs). It has developed guidance on PRO-AE data, including the benefits of wider use and approaches for data capture and analysis. Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) encompass the full range of self-reporting, rather than only patient reports col

Low awareness of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw among dentists: a systematic review with a medical and bioethical perspective.

INTRODUCTION: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) is a serious adverse drug reaction that can seriously affect the quality of life of patients if not promptly diagnosed and treated. To date, preventive measures have been the most effective strategy for reducing the incidence of MRONJ. The role of dental practitioners in managing patients treated with Bone Modifying Agents (BMAs) varies across countries, with some healthcare systems providing a more structured approach than others. This systematic review aims to investigate the knowledge and awareness of MRONJ among dentists, in
