Is sensitivity to daily stress predictive of onset or persistence of psychopathology?

PURPOSE: The aim of the current study was to replicate findings in adults indicating that higher sensitivity to stressful events is predictive of both onset and persistence of psychopathological symptoms in a sample of adolescents and young adults. In addition, we tested the hypothesis that sensitivity to mild stressors in particular is predictive of the developmental course of psychopathology. METHODS: We analyzed experience sampling and questionnaire data collected at baseline and one-year follow-up of 445 adolescent and young adult twins and non-twin siblings (age range: 15-34). Linear mul

Maternal severe stressful life events and risk of neural tube defects among rural Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Several human studies suggested an association between maternal stressful life events and increased risk of neural tube defects (NTDs). All of these studies, however, are from the United States; little was known among populations in developing countries that have different social and economic status. METHODS: We examined the association between occurrence of maternal severe stressful life events during the periconceptional period and risk of NTDs in a population-based case-control study in Shanxi Province, China. Participants included 631 NTD cases (285 with anencephaly, 297 with

How negative life-events affect sleep quality of college students: a chain-mediating model.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates how negative life events affect sleep quality among Chinese college students, focusing on the sequential roles of coping styles (positive and negative) and rumination as linking mechanisms. METHODS: We recruited 572 college students through an online survey. Participants completed validated measures of negative life events, trait coping styles, rumination, and sleep quality. To test our hypothesized pathways, we conducted correlation and regression analyses, followed by bootstrapped serial mediation modeling using the PROCESS Macro (Model 6). RESULTS: Negativ

Stressful life events in childhood and incident stroke: cross-national, longitudinal cohort analyses of HRS and CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Childhood stressful life events may contribute to later-life stroke risk, but it remains unclear whether this association is consistent and of similar magnitude across different sociocultural and institutional settings. METHODS: We analyzed data from two nationally representative cohorts: the U.S. Health and Retirement Study (HRS, 2010–2020) and the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS, 2011–2020). Stressful life events in childhood—financial hardship, parental unemployment, parental substance abuse, foster home, parental separation or divorce, and parental death—

The effects of recent stressful life events on outcomes in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis: results from the longitudinal EU-GEI high-risk study.

BACKGROUND: Recent stressful life events (SLE) are a risk factor for psychosis, but limited research has explored how SLEs affect individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis. The current study investigated the longitudinal effects of SLEs on functioning and symptom severity in CHR individuals, where we hypothesized CHR would report more SLEs than healthy controls (HC), and SLEs would be associated with poorer outcomes. METHODS: The study used longitudinal data from the EU-GEI High Risk study. Data from 331 CHR participants were analyzed to examine the effects of SLEs on changes in f

The development of an environmental risk score using Swedish National Registers and its impact on subsequent episodes of major depression.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events (SLEs) increase the risk for subsequent major depression (MD) episodes. Most prior studies of SLEs utilized questionnaires or interview-based assessments. We sought to develop and evaluate an environmental risk score (ERS) for MD from multiple classes of SLEs obtained from national Swedish registries. METHODS: We assessed, in the entire adult population of Sweden (n = 7,105,712), the occurrence of 52 categories of SLEs derived from registry information for the 6 months prior to January 9, 2010 and the risk for MD registration over the subsequent 6 months. Stressful Life Events and Problem Gambling Among Chinese Lottery Gamblers: The Mediating Effects of Coping Strategies and Magical Thinking.

Problem gambling poses serious harm to individuals and societies worldwide. This study aims to investigate the relationship between stressful life events and problem gambling, and further explore the mediating role of coping strategies and magical thinking. Currently, the research on problem gambling is widely conducted worldwide. However, due to the unique characteristics of China's gambling industry, research on problem gambling conducted in the Chinese mainland has always been an underrepresented area in international gambling research. This study recruited participants from a province in c

Fatalism and ICD-11 CPTSD and PTSD diagnoses: results from Nigeria, Kenya & Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Existing research on post-traumatic sequelae suggests a positive association between fatalism and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the associations between fatalism and the new ICD-11 diagnosis of complex PTSD (CPTSD) have never been explored before. OBJECTIVE: The current study explored the association between fatalism and PTSD and CPTSD in samples from three African countries. METHODS: A total of 2,524 participants from Nigeria (n = 1018), Kenya (n = 1006), and Ghana (n = 500) completed measures of fatalism (non-judgemental fatalism, current fatalism,

Unexplained ocular and visual symptoms: The need for a psychosomatic approach in Ophthalmology.

INTRODUCTION: Psychogenic causes for some somatic symptoms have been widely recognised. In Ophthalmology however, there are few studies that address this issue, and current Ophthalmology Training Programs do not include formal teaching in Psychosomatics. Psychosomatic phenomena in ophthalmology are probably under-diagnosed, which may reduce therapeutic effectiveness, decrease patient and physician satisfaction, and increase health costs due to multiple consultations and prescriptions. The aims of this study were to describe patients with unexplained visual/ocular symptoms (UVOS), and to estima

Psychological distress in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis: the risk factors, protection factors, and cumulative effect.

This study aimed to examine the psychological status among Chronic Atrophic Gastritis (CAG) patients and to find the cumulative effects of risk and protective factors. A sample of 101 CAG patients completed the investigation. Hierarchical linear regression was used to find risk and protective factors, and examine the cumulative effects in risk factor index (RFI) and protective factor index (PFI). Results showed that nine symptoms from SCL-90-R were severer among CAG patients than those in adult norm. Risk factors including positive family history of cancer and higher negative life events could

Coping strategies among colorectal cancer patients undergoing surgery and the role of the surgeon in mitigating distress: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Distress is common among cancer patients and leads to worse postoperative outcomes. Surgeons are often the first physicians to have in-depth conversations with patients about a new colorectal cancer diagnosis; therefore, it is important that these surgeons understand how patients cope with the distress of a diagnosis and how they can help patients manage this distress. METHODS: Patients with colorectal cancer were recruited from an outpatient surgery clinic. Purposive sampling was used to recruit patients if they were either planning to undergo surgery or had undergone surgery wit

Affective temperaments play an important role in the relationship between child abuse and the diagnosis of bipolar disorder.

In previous studies, various components such as environmental and genetic factors have been shown to contribute to the development of bipolar disorder (BD). This study investigated how multiple factors, including child abuse, adult life events, and affective temperaments, are interrelated and how they affect the diagnosis of BD. A total of 170 healthy controls and 75 BD patients completed the following self-administered questionnaires: the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 evaluating the severity of depressive symptoms; the Child Abuse and Trauma Scale (CATS) evaluating child abuse; the Temperame

Patients' lived experience of intensive care when being on mechanical ventilation during the weaning process: A hermeneutic phenomenological study.

BACKGROUND: The medical and nursing care of the patient on mechanical ventilation has developed and proceeds in terms of ventilator functions, sedation strategies and patient participation. New data are needed to explore the weaning process from the patients' perspective. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the meaning of being a patient on mechanical ventilation during the weaning process in the intensive care unit. METHODS: This study used van Manen's hermeneutic phenomenological approach. Interviews were conducted, including twenty former intensive care patients from three diff

Do adverse life events at first onset of auditory verbal hallucinations influence subsequent voice characteristics? Results from an epidemiological study.

Understanding what happens at first onset of auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs) is extremely important on a clinical and theoretical level. Previous studies have only focused on age with regard to first onset of AVHs. In the current epidemiological study, we examined a number of aspects relating to first onset of AVHs, such as the role of adverse life events at first onset of AVHs on symptom severity and general mental health. For this purpose, we compared participants who reported adverse life events at first onset of AHVs (adverse-trigger group; N = 76) to those that did not report any sp

Reward Dysfunction in the Manic Spectrum: Unable to Win? The Use of Biographical Information to Refine Neurobiological Modeling.

OBJECTIVE: The manic spectrum is thought to be characterized by a hypersensitive biobehavioral reward system, the behavioral activation system. Evidence for this framework comes from questionnaire-based, self-report data collected in cross-sectional and prospective studies of mania, mania in remission, and proneness to hypomania, and from functional neuroimaging investigations of brain reward circuit activity during incentivized choice protocols. Although heightened reward anticipation is consistently documented, the status of later goal attainment activity, hedonic responses, and satiety reac

Life adversity is associated with smoking relapse after a quit attempt.

Multiple cross-sectional studies have linked adverse childhood events and adult adversities to current smoking, lifetime smoking, and former smoking. To date, however, there have been no direct observational studies assessing the influence of adversities on smoking relapse. We prospectively followed 123 participants, 86 of whom were habitual smokers, from pre-quit ad libitum smoking to four weeks post-quit. Thirty-seven non-smokers were also tested in parallel as a comparison group. Subjects provided biological samples for confirmation of abstinence status and self-report history of adversitie

The Nature of Posttraumatic Growth in Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse.

Potential negative sequelae for survivors of child sexual abuse is well documented. However, growing evidence suggests that some individuals who actively cope with traumatic events can progress from a negative trajectory toward positive psychological change, often termed posttraumatic growth. Current posttraumatic growth theories may be of limited applicability to developmental considerations involved in child sexual abuse. This explorative study examines posttraumatic growth among adult female survivors of child sexual abuse. In-depth interviews were conducted with six participants who believ

Stressful Life Event Experiences of Pregnant Women in the United States: A Latent Class Analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Nearly 65% to 70% of pregnant women in the United States experience one or more stressful life events (SLEs), which can lead to adverse maternal and/or fetal outcomes. This study aimed to identify groups of women with similar patterns of antenatal SLE experiences, and to examine their sociodemographic correlates. METHODS: Data from the 2009 to 2011 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were used and latent class analysis performed (N = 115,704) to identify unobserved class membership. The relative likelihood of membership in each latent class was explored using multinomial l
