Proliferating trichilemmal tumors: CT and MR imaging findings in two cases, one with malignant transformation.

We report the imaging findings in two patients with proliferating trichilemmal tumors. In the first patient, the tumor arose on the lower lip, a very unusual location for this type of tumor, and showed malignant transformation with metastasis to a regional lymph node. It was seen as a poorly marginated soft-tissue mass with isointense signal on T1-weighted MR images and hyperintense signal on T2-weighted images. Large areas of high signal intensity caused by necrosis were also found within the tumor on T2-weighted images. After i.v. administration of contrast material, the mass showed signific

Oral malignant melanoma: long-term follow up in three patients.

Three patients with oral malignant melanoma, who survived for at least ten years after initial examination, are presented. The depth of tumor invasion was 5 mm or less in all patients. The first patient received surgery and postoperative immunotherapy and she had no recurrence more than 18 years after treatment. The second patient underwent surgery but had local recurrence after 11 years. He underwent resection and postoperative chemotherapy and was still alive more than 14 years after initial examination. The third patient received radiotherapy and had metastasis nine months after treatment.

Modified Marionette lip-split incision for bucco-gingival cancer.

Selection of incision in anterior bucco-gingival cancer is challenging. Midline vertical incision could lead to lower lip necrosis in cancer surgery due to vascular compromise of labial artery in lesion side. Marionette line incision decreases the risks of lower lip necrosis. However, it leads to oral commissure sagging and subsequent saliva drooling after wide excision and reconstruction. We modified the Marionette line with an upward and oblique manner in the beginning of incision (modified Marionette line incision, MMLI). The results were retrospectively analyzed in this study. A retrospect

Trends in the incidence of oral cancer in Nova Scotia from 1983 to 1997.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to characterize the total burden of oral cancer in Nova Scotia over the 15-year period from 1983 to 1997 and to identify any trends in the number of cases or incidence rates at specific anatomic sites or within specific age or sex groups over this time period. STUDY DESIGN: All cases that had a diagnosis of invasive oral cancer (ICD-9 sites 140-146) during the study period were retrieved from the records of the Nova Scotia Cancer Registry, which theoretically includes all cancer cases in the province. Cases of in situ carcinoma, lymphoma, and leukemia w

Frequency of cancer in first-degree relatives of patients with cleft lip and/or palate in the Brazilian population.

Congenital malformations and cancer may share common etiological factors and the association between nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P) and cancers has been observed in different studies. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of cancer in relatives of patients with NSCL/P. This investigation was a cross-sectional, case-controlled study, evaluating 358 patients with NSCL/P treated at a Referral Center for craniofacial deformities (case group) and 358 patients without craniofacial alterations (control group). Information concerning the gender, age and family histor

VGLL3-Rearranged Spindle Cell Rhabdomyoblastic Tumor: A Clinicopathologic and Molecular Genetic Study of 18 Cases With Consistently Indolent Behavior.

A rare spindle cell tumor with a skeletal muscle phenotype, male predilection, exclusive involvement of the head and neck region, particularly the tongue, and a suggested indolent course has been previously reported as vestigial-like 3 (VGLL3)-rearranged spindle cell rhabdomyosarcoma (SRMS). We report 18 cases with extended clinical follow-up, detailed molecular results, and methylation profiling. Tumors occurred in 5 females, 12 males, and 1 patient of unknown sex with a median age of 58 years (range, 22-71). Tumors involved the tongue (n = 13), lower lip (2), retropharyngeal region (n = 1),

Risk for subsequent cancer after diagnosis of basal-cell carcinoma. A population-based, epidemiologic study.

BACKGROUND: Considerable debate is taking place over whether patients with basal-cell carcinoma and other skin neoplasms are at increased risk for internal cancer. OBJECTIVE: To investigate risk for subsequent cancer in patients with basal-cell carcinoma. DESIGN: Population-based cohort study. SETTING: Denmark, from 1978 ot 1991. PATIENTS: 37674 patients followed for a maximum of 14 years after a first diagnosis of basal-cell carcinoma. MEASUREMENTS: The occurrence of subsequent cancer was compared with the expected cancer pattern (which was determined on the basis of national incidence d

Mental nerve neuropathy in systemic cancer. Report of three cases.

Mental nerve neuropathy (MNN), an uncommon neurologic symptom, was observed in three patients with cancer. In the first patient, MNN was the primary manifestation of an occult carcinoma of the lung. The second patient had bilateral MNN. In the third patient, MNN coexisted with symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia as a consequence of a cavum adenocarcinoma. A nontraumatic MNN must be considered a potentially ominous symptom that should prompt a search for cancer.

Basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma: Comparison of high-frequency ultrasound and pathology.

BACKGROUND: Skin neoplasms, particularly basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), are prevalent forms of skin malignancies. To enhance accurate diagnosis, non-invasive techniques including high-frequency ultrasound (HFUS) are crucial. HFUS offers deeper penetration compared to reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), and optical coherence tomography (OCT), making it valuable for examining skin structures. The aim of this study was to investigate and diagnose localized manifestation of BCC and SCC with HFUS and compare it with pathology results in patients referred to Razi Ho

Extra-Parotid Pleomorphic Adenoma and Low-Grade Salivary Malignancy in the Head and Neck Region.

Background and objective Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common major salivary gland neoplasm. Around 80% of them arise in the parotid glands, whereas 10% originate in the minor salivary glands. The pleomorphic adenoma of the extra-parotid site is defined by its location outside the primary salivary gland. The minor salivary gland adenomas occur at the hard and soft palate, lips, tongue, lacrimal glands, pharynx, larynx, paranasal sinus, and nasal cavity. Pleomorphic adenoma in parapharyngeal space may occur de novo or as an extension of the deep lobe of the parotid tumors. Our objective in th

Electron microscopy in the diagnosis of head and neck tumors.

Six patients with malignant head and neck tumors are shown to have required electron microscopy for accurate diagnosis. In all of these tumors, there were ultrastructural features of cytodifferentiation that were not discernible by light microscopy, such as neurosecretory granules, desmosomes, cytoplasmic processes, tonofibrils, and myofilaments. Electron microscopy is helpful in the differential diagnosis of tumors in general, but its effectiveness is particularly apparent in small-cell "undifferentiated" tumors such as neuroblastoma, rhabdomyosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, undifferentiated squamo

Appendiceal carcinoid in a pediatric patient with Peutz-Jeghers syndrome: A case report and comprehensive literature review.

RATIONALE: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS), a rare autosomal dominant disorder, is characterized by mucocutaneous pigmentations, hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract, and a high risk of developing various malignancies. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 case of appendiceal carcinoid associated with PJS has been previously reported in the pediatric population. PATIENT CONCERNS: We report a 7-year-old girl who was admitted for severe, intermittent abdominal pain and cramps, nausea, and vomiting. Multiple brown melanotic macules on the lips, buccal mucosa, and the tongue were noted.

Increased burden of lip, oral, and pharyngeal cancer in adolescents and young adults from 1990 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Lip, oral, and pharyngeal cancers are significant contributors to the global cancer burden; however, adequate estimates in younger groups are scarce. To address this gap, we examined their global, regional, and national changes in the burden in adolescents and young adults and their associated risks from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: Based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2021, we assessed the number of cases and incidence, mortality, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100,000 population, the corresponding estimated annual percentage ch
