[Promotion of orodental health in adolescents in Africa].

Bad dental hygiene in adults is usually the result of bad care during childhood. Within the framework of Health for All, WHO and the International Dental Federation defined global objectives for dental health which allow for monitoring progress in different countries. The most common dental problems, such as dental cavities, can be prevented by simple and inexpensive methods. Dental health is based on dental hygiene, nutrition, fluoride intake and dental service utilisation. Dental health promotion aims to create an environment favourable to the adoption of these healthy behaviours. The princi

Vincamine as a GPR40 agonist shows potential in treating female Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND: Women face a heightened risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), partly attributed to post-menopausal estrogen loss. Given that ERβ activation avoids the oncogenic risks of ERα and GPR40 plays a pivotal role in neuronal function, the ERβ/GPR40 axis show a promising therapeutic target for anti-AD drug discovery. To inspect the role of this axis, we employed Vincamine (Vin), a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid from Madagascar periwinkle that we previously identified as a GPR40 agonist. PURPOSE: To elucidate the role of ERβ/GPR40 axis in AD pathogenesis and to investigate the therapeutic potent

Care trajectories of children with spinal dysraphism treated in Reunion Island between 2006 and 2024.

BACKGROUND: Spinal dysraphism (SD) requires lifelong multidisciplinary follow-up to prevent complications and optimize functional outcomes. In geographically fragmented healthcare systems, continuity of care may be challenging, particularly when patients cross regional or national borders to access specialized services. This study aimed to describe care trajectories and identify factors associated with optimal follow-up among children with SD managed in the southwestern Indian Ocean region. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study including children with SD who received active postna

Gender differences in use of cigarette and non-cigarette tobacco products among adolescents aged 13-15 years in 20 African countries.

INTRODUCTION: Examining gender differences in youth tobacco use is important as it aligns tobacco control within the context of broader human development goals seeking to eliminate gender inequalities. In this study, we examined gender differences in adolescent use of cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, shisha, and e-cigarettes in Africa. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study using data from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey. Our analytical sample comprised 56442 adolescents aged 13-15 years from 20 African countries. Weighted, country-specific prevalence estimates were computed overall and by g

Comparative Lysine Acetylome Analysis of Y. pestis YfiQ/CobB Mutants Reveals that Acetylation of SlyA Lys73 Significantly Promotes Biofilm Formation of Y. pestis.

Increasing evidence shows that protein lysine acetylation is involved in almost every aspect of cellular physiology in bacteria. Yersinia pestis is a flea-borne pathogen responsible for millions of human deaths in three global pandemics. However, the functional role of lysine acetylation in this pathogen remains unclear. Here, we found more acetylated proteins and a higher degree of acetylation in Y. pestis grown under mammalian host (Mh) conditions than under flea vector (Fv) conditions, suggesting that protein acetylation could significantly change during fleabite transmission. Comparative a

Use of Cheminformatics to Determine Potential Drug Interactions between Popular Barbadian Botanical Medicines and Antihypertensive Drugs.

Barbados has a rich traditional use of medicinal plants, especially among the older population who may have a chronic noncommunicable disease. This study aims to identify possible drug-herb interactions between popular herbal remedies used to manage elevated blood pressure and conventional antihypertensive drugs. In this study, in silico molecular docking experiments with AutoDock Vina (Scripps Research Institute, La Jolla, CA), a part of Yasara Structure software, version 20.12.24, were used to screen 30 potential phytochemicals for drug interactions from 11 popular plants in Barbados that ar

Emergence of West Nile Virus Lineage-2 in Resident Corvids in Istanbul, Turkey.

West Nile fever is a vector-borne viral disease affecting animals and humans causing significant health and economic problems globally. This study was aimed at investigating circulating West Nile virus (WNV) strains in free-ranging corvids in Istanbul, Turkey. Brain, liver, and kidney were collected from corvids (n = 34) between June 2019 and April 2020 and analyzed for the presence of WNV-specific RNA by quantitative RT-PCR. In addition, histopathologic and immunohistochemical examinations were also performed. Samples found to be positive by qRT-PCR were partially sequenced. WNV-specific RNA

Population genetic structure of the major malaria vector Anopheles funestus s.s. and allied species in southern Africa.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles funestus s.s., one of the major malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa, belongs to a group of eleven African species that are morphologically similar at the adult stage, most of which do not transmit malaria. The population structure of An. funestus based on mitochondrial DNA data led to the description of two cryptic subdivisions, clade I widespread throughout Africa and clade II known only from Mozambique and Madagascar. In this study, we investigated five common members of the Anopheles funestus group in southern Africa in order to determine relationships within and bet

Rift Valley fever virus seroprevalence in human rural populations of Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis caused by a phlebovirus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. Humans can also be infected through direct contact with blood (aerosols) or tissues (placenta, stillborn) of infected animals. Although severe clinical cases can be observed, infection with RVF virus (RVFV) in humans is, in most cases, asymptomatic or causes a febrile illness without serious symptoms. In small ruminants RVFV mainly causes abortion and neonatal death. The distribution of RVFV has been well documented in many African countries, particularly in the n

On the origins and admixture of Malagasy: new evidence from high-resolution analyses of paternal and maternal lineages.

The Malagasy have been shown to be a genetically admixed population combining parental lineages with African and South East Asian ancestry. In the present paper, we fit the Malagasy admixture history in a highly resolved phylogeographic framework by typing a large set of mitochondrial DNA and Y DNA markers in unrelated individuals from inland (Merina) and coastal (Antandroy, Antanosy, and Antaisaka) ethnic groups. This allowed performance of a multilevel analysis in which the diversity among main ethnic divisions, lineage ancestries, and modes of inheritance could be concurrently evaluated. Ad

Typing methods for the plague pathogen, Yersinia pestis.

Phenotypic and genotypic methodologies have been used to differentiate the etiological agent of plague, Yersinia pestis. Historically, phenotypic methods were used to place isolates into one of three biovars based on nitrate reduction and glycerol fermentation. Classification of Y. pestis into genetic subtypes is problematic due to the relative monomorphic nature of the pathogen. Resolution into groups is dependent on the number and types of loci used in the analysis. The last 5-10 years of research and analysis in the field of Y. pestis genotyping have resulted in a recognition by Western sci

The effect of short-term preoperative nutritional intervention for cleft surgery eligibility.

BACKGROUND: Children with orofacial clefts are highly susceptible to malnutrition, with severe malnutrition restricting their eligibility to receive safe surgery. Ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTF) are an effective treatment for malnutrition; however, the effectiveness has not been demonstrated in this patient population prior to surgery. We studied the effectiveness of short-term RUTF use in transitioning children with malnutrition, who were initially ineligible for surgery, into surgical candidates. METHODS: A cohort of patients from Ghana, Honduras, Malawi, Madagascar, Nicaragua, and Ve

Epidemiology of pediatric schistosomiasis in hard-to-reach areas and populations: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis affects over 250 million people worldwide. Despite children and the poor being key risk groups, limited research and control activities target pre-school aged children (PSAC) and hard-to-reach populations. As endemic countries shift the goals of their schistosomiasis programs from morbidity control to disease elimination, there is a need for inclusive planning to cover all affected age groups from all geographical areas and populations to achieve sustainable impact and health equity. METHODS: We conducted searches in MEDLINE, Web of Science, Embase (Ovid), and LILA

What kind of poison was used in "The Name of the Rose"?

In the novel "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco, a fanatical monk laced the pages of a book with a poison, which led to the death of several monks in a medieval monastery. Based on modern toxicological knowledge, an attempt can be made to determine whether there exists a substance meeting the criteria of the poison described in the novel. To this end, toxicological literature on the lethal doses of plant-derived poisons and their duration of action was reviewed. Cowbane (Cicuta virosa), a plant used for preparing poisonous potions, contains cicutoxin which kills at a dose of 500 mg. Similar

Do anti-malarials in Africa meet quality standards? The market penetration of non quality-assured artemisinin combination therapy in eight African countries.

BACKGROUND: Quality of artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) is important for ensuring malaria parasite clearance and protecting the efficacy of artemisinin-based therapies. The extent to which non quality-assured ACT (non-QAACT), or those not granted global regulatory approval, are available and used to treat malaria in endemic countries is poorly documented. This paper uses national and sub-national medicine outlet surveys conducted in eight study countries (Benin, Kinshasa and Kantanga [Democratic Republic of the Congo, DRC], Kenya, Madagascar, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia) be
