Treatment effects of Herbst appliance in skeletal Class II cases during pre-pubertal and post-pubertal periods: a cone-beam computed tomographic study.

In the present study, Thirty-six Class patients II (A condition in which the upper jaw is larger than the lower jaw) were randomly selected and assigned to one of two groups based on their maturation stage: the pre-pubertal group (18 patients, mean age 9.15 ± 1.5 years) and post-pubertal group (18 patients, mean age 16.3 ± 1.0 years). All patients were treated with a metallic splint-supported Herbst IV appliance (An appliance that acts like artificial joint working between the upper and power jaws that keeps the lower jaw in a forward position, thus improving the Class II condition). Pretreatm

Total maxillary arch distalization by using headgear in an adult patient.

Although headgear is rarely used in adult patients, its use in adults is mainly for anchorage control. In the current case report, a 24-year-old patient had a skeletal Class I relationship with a Class II tendency, brachyfacial pattern, significant facial asymmetry, and dental 3/4 cusp Class II molar and canine relationships on both sides. The patient declined surgery, and facial asymmetry was not his concern. The final treatment goal was to achieve a stable Class I dental relationship and normal occlusion without significantly compromising the patient's profile. The patient was compliant with

Effects of a fixed functional appliance on upper airway volume: A 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Although functional appliances (FAs) are primarily used to treat Class II malocclusions, their effects on the upper airway have generally been reported in studies involving 2-dimensional analysis of cephalometric radiographs. This study aimed to use 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography to (1) determine the effects on upper airway volume and minimum cross-sectional area (MCA) when an FA is used for orthodontic treatment and (2) identify pretreatment markers for airway changes. METHODS: Pre- and posttreatment cone-beam computed tomography scans were selected from 73 childre

Nonsurgical and nonprosthetic camouflage treatment of skeletal Class II open bite with bilaterally missing lower first molars.

This report illustrates the successful nonsurgical and nonprosthetic camouflage treatment of a skeletal Class II open bite malocclusion combined with missing mandibular first molars bilaterally. In the mandible, the second and third molars were uprighted and protracted, substituting for the missing first molars. In the maxilla, anterior bodily retraction and full-arch intrusion were achieved following premolar and second molar extraction, which also induced autorotation of the mandible. The treatment outcome and prognosis were confirmed with three-dimensional superimposition techniques, along
